The Salesians of Don Bosco and the social and political struggle in Belgium in a period of transition (1891-1918) FREDDY STAELENS The A. points already in the title to the three main themes of his contribution. First the Salesians of Don Bosco, then the social and political struggles in Belgium, and then the period of transition between 1891 and 1918. The presentation follows a logical sequence and is developed in six chapters. The first serves as an introduction and outlines the transition period to which reference is made. Then follow three chap- ters which show how the Salesians were seen by Catholics (ch. 2) and by the socia- lists in Belgium (ch. 3), and how they themselves saw the socialists (ch. 4). The fifth chapter recalls some polemics, sometimes of a scandalous nature, in which the Sale- sians were involved. Finally the sixth chapter traces the evolution of the Salesians in face of the social question. In conclusion the A. is able to deduce that the Salesians, whose authoritative spokesman was the Provincial Fr. Francesco Scaloni, played an active part in social and political discussions of the period, and that within the Catholic sphere, they followed a progressively democratic line. A contribution of Fr Carlo Maria Baratta to the reform of sacred music in Italy (1877-1905) GIOVANNI DOFF-SOTTA Of the many activities carried out by Fr Carlo Maria Baratta, especially at Parma as Director of the San Benedetto Institute, the article presents in detail what he did for the renewal of music in the liturgy, a point of great interest in Italy in the last twenty years of the nineteenth century. It describes his work as ecclesiastical assistant to the laity and as chapel master at the Salesian Institute of Parma. Outside the text there are very full notes which recall his main collaborators, the difficulties he met with in the diocese, the context of his novel gregorian interpre- tation, the reasons for the reform and the subsequent steps preceding the decisions of Pius X. His activity clearly follows the line already opened up by the Founder. “The christian guided to virtue and civilization according to the spirit of St. Vincent de Paul – Turin 1848” An analysis of Don Bosco’s editing DANIEL MALFAIT - JACQUES SCHEPENS This contribution is an attempt to present Don Bosco’s booklet “The christian guided to virtue and civilization according to the spirit of St. Vincent de Paul – Turin 1848”. Leaving aside the aspect of the book’s content, attention is concentrated espe- cially on the work of editing. In this context an effort is made to document the va- rious editions and the material from the archives. In editing the next Don Bosco drew his inspiration from an original French edition written by A. J. Ansart. After getting to know the person and literary background of the author, an attempt is made to specify the extent of the dependence of Don Bosco’s book on the Italian translation of the French original of Ansart. Finally some considerations are expressed which serve as a key for the correct interpretation of the book’s contents.

Don Bosco's Definitive Vocational Commitment (1844-1846) The Year 1846, Terrible and GloriOus Arthur J. Lenti, SDB 1. Don Bosco's Vocation Decision and Dream of 1844 on Bosco, after ordination in 1841, enrolled in the Pastoral Institute of St. Francis of Assisi for Priests (Convitto ecclesiastico). Here, while Dengaged in the study of moral-pastoral theology and preaching under the direction of Father Joseph Cafasso, he first became involved in a special ministry to young people at risk. 1 He met them doing time in the city prisons, idling on the streets and squares, and working at odd jobs in various workshops. He began gathering them for religious instruction and recreation on Sundays and holy days under the auspices of the Pastoral Institute of St. Francis of Assisi. Over the three years he spent there the initial small group of youngsters grew in numbers. It became ''his Oratory." Due to leave the Pastoral Institute in the summer of 1844 Don Bosco had to face a new personal vocational crisis. Ten years earlier, toward the end of his secondary course of study in Chieri, John Bosco had entered a period of vocational crisis and discernment that lasted from the spring of 1834 to the summer of 1835. He had seriously considered joining the Franciscans, but after a period of inner struggle and uncertainty, he had followed advice and entered the diocesan seminary instead. In 1844 the vocational crisis and discernment 'Father (Saint) Joseph Cafasso (1811-1860),like Don Bosco from Castelnuovo, was ordained in 1833, attended the Pastoral Institute (Convitto), and was chosen by its founder (Father Luigi Guala) to serve as lecturer in moral theology.

The indispensable assistance was provided by my advisor Michael Bernhard, who encouraged me to work on the project since I arrived at the University of Florida. He gave me valuable and timely feedback, and his wide knowledge of the European political history and research methods proved irreplaceable in this regard. He is otherwise a warm, humble and an understanding person, a scholar who does not mind and even appreciates when a graduate student is critical toward his own ideas, which is a feature whose value cannot be overestimated. I received also valuable assistance from members of my dissertation committee: Benjamin Smith, Leonardo A. Villalon, Beth Rosenson and Chris Gibson. In particular, Ben Smith taught me in an accessible way about the foundational works in Political Science, which served as an inspiration to write this dissertation, while Chris Gibson offered very useful feedback on quantitative research methods. In addition, I received enormous help from two scholars at the University of Chicago, where this research project passed through an adolescent stage. Dan Slater, my advisor, and Alberto Simpser helped me transform my incoherent hypotheses developed in Poland into a readable master’s thesis, which I completed in 2007.

  • Teachings on Spiritual Life
SAINT JOHN BOSCO TEACHINGS ON SPIRITUAL LIFE An anthology Introduction and notes by Aldo Giraudo LAS – ROME Introduction Aldo GIRAUDO, sdb Which of his writings best portray Saint John Bosco as a teacher of inner life and give us, if not all of his “spiritual doctrine",1 at least the most characteristic features of his spirituality, that fertile flow of good fruits we think of as a “school of holiness valid for every state of life”?2 The question is pertinent since not only did Don Bosco, like St Alphonsus, not leave behind pages revealing the intimacy of his being; he also did not consider bringing together a systematic picture of a spirituality, as we would call it today, or an ascetica, as he would have called it in his era: a harmonious set of spiritual reflections. Certainly he gave us splendid testimonies, few and modest as they were, of the spiritual life of others. He saw them in action and was himself a concomitant factor for them: Louis Comollo, Dominic Savio, Michael Magone, Francis Besucco.3 Though in narrative form and written to edify, these documents do highlight inner experiences and essential features of Christian spirituality as proposed for young people. A study of these biographical sketches, the inner pursuits of their youthful characters, and the general atmosphere of growth and development in the educational setting, in the community which was the context in which their spiritual adventure unfolded, allows us to garner the essential features of a model of youthful holiness, and the salient principles of a vade-mecum of ascetics comparable with the Introduction to the Devout Life by St Francis de Sales.

RELEASE NOTE: This release includes updates to the main Register PDF and Excel files, including a massive revision to the Russian cultivar information as a result of a detailed review by our Assistant Registrar, Tatyana Polyakova. In particular, the Latvian cultivars have been updated and many Kravchenko cultivars from Uzbekistan have been added or revised. Also, multiple cultivars from Kazakhstan as well as those of Makedonskaya and Ihara have been updated or added. In addition, the Registrars have decided to maintain the British English format of cultivar names, based on 40 years of tradition and worldwide usage of the names, while converting the text to American English. This primarily affects abbreviations in the cultivar names, such that in British English, Dr, Mr, Mrs, and Ms are all written without periods after them, but in both British and American English, Mons. and Pres. do have periods. There are actually rules governing this. This release is the basis for the identically dated printed hardcopy release of the Register. It has 3561 entries including 1223 registered lilacs (in bold), 640 more with established but non- registered names, and 669 more with non-established names. There are 1025 entries with synonyms or rejected or unacceptable names.

Last updated: March 30, 2018 ©FV & RBG International Register and Checklist of Cultivar Names in the Genus Syringa L. (Oleaceae) (“Work-in-Progress” Lilac Register) For information on title, copyright, address, table of content, acknowledgements, historical overview and introduction see Introductory Pages. Introductory notes concerning the entries in the Register and Checklist. The Register and Checklist contains all cultivar names known to the Registrar, and many designations that may be interpreted erroneously as being cultivar names. The name of a cultivar or Group consists of the name of the genus or lower taxonomic unit to which it is assigned together with a cultivar or Group epithet. The name may be written in a variety of equivalent ways (ICNCP-2009, Article 8.1)1. Syringa ‘Excel’, Syringa ×hyacinthiflora ‘Excel’, lilac ‘Excel’, sering ‘Excel’ (in Dutch), lilas ‘Excel’ (in French), and Flieder ‘Excel’ (in German) are names for the same cultivar. A trade designation is not a name but is a device that is usually used for marketing a cultivar or Group in place of its accepted name when the accepted name is not considered suitable for marketing purposes (ICNCP-2009, Article 13.1). Trade designations, including trademarks, appear in small capital letters (e.g. LUDWIG SPAETH). Trade designations, including trademarks, are always to be cited together with, or in juxtaposition to, the accepted name (ICNCP-2009, Article 17.2) (e.g. Syringa LUDWIG SPAETH [‘Andenken an Ludwig Späth’], or TINKERBELLE™ [‘Bailbelle’]). Diacritical marks are integral part of certain languages such as French, German, Latvian and Swedish, where they affect pronunciation. Neglecting umlauts is simply an orthographic error and changes the pronunciation of a name or word; neglecting diacritical marks is unnecessary and awkward.

  • Apostolic Consciousness of Don Bosco: a Hermeneutical-Phenomenological Approach to His Spirituality
SEMINARE t. 36 * 2015, nr 1, s. 29-45 Ks. Francis-Vincent Anthony SDB Salesian Pontifical University, Rome APOSTOLIC CONSCIOUSNESS OF DON BOSCO: A HERMENEUTICAL-PHENOMENOLOGICAL APPROACH TO HIS SPIRITUALITY 1. Introduction The term ‘spirituality’ is gaining popularity with a wide range of meanings that refer to both religious and secular aspects of life1. If Christian spirituality was once seen as intrinsically bound to monastic life, the growth and proliferation of religious congregations and secular institutes engaged in active apostolate today, have highlighted the need of integrating apostolic action and spiritual life. From the perspective of monastic spirituality, apostolic action was at times regarded as a danger to spiritual life leading to activism and dispersion. Even when apostolic action was held in positive regard, it was considered as something parallel to spiri- tual life or a means to perfection2. The dualism of contemplation and action points to other underlying dua- lisms such as sacred and profane, consecration and mission, interior experience of the divine (love for God) and exterior action in favour of the human (love for man). A closer look at the life of Christ, the apostles, and the saints of active apos- tolic life, suggests that there is an inseparable bond between the spiritual and the apostolic dimensions of Christian living. With expressions such as “ecstasy of life and action” (St. Francis de Sales), “acting passively” (St. Vincent de Paul), “give me souls, take away the rest” (St. John Bosco), some saints tried to express the mystical transformation experienced by them in their apostolic life and action3. In the contemporary context, the emergence and the progressive configura- tion of ‘spiritual theology’ as a distinct branch has brought into focus ‘God-expe- rience’, ‘religious experience’ or ‘spiritual experience’ as the core of spirituality4.
