Roads of Ancient Anatolia ,editedbyTakekoHaradaandFatih Cimok(:ATurizmYayınları,2008)2volumes,237 pageseach,110euroseach.Volume1has338pictures,vol ume2has339pictures.Thebooksfeatureover250different ancientroads,rockcutpasses,roadinscriptions,milestones, bridges,andrutsfromthetotheOttomans.Volume1 coversWesternandSouthernAnatolia;volume2coversCentral Anatolia,theEuphratesandBeyond,andtheBlackSeaRegion. Intheforewordtheeditorsdescribetheconditionsunderwhichthevolumeswereprepared: overninetydaysoftravelannuallyforthelastsixyearswithatotaldrivingdistanceofover 200,000kilometers;longandarduouswalkstoreachanumberofthesitesplusaccidentsand heat,allatacostofhundredsofthousandsofdollars.Thislaborofloveisagifttothepeopleof TurkeyandtoscholarsinterestedinAnatolia’sancientroutes.Picturesinthevolumeare groupedgeographically.Theeditorsacknowledgethatmanyancientroadsarenotinthevol umeandthatthevolumeisnotacatalogofroads.Theyspellouttheimportanceoftheirpro ject:“Thepicturesinthisbookarepossiblythefirstandlastpicturesofmanyancientroadsbe foretheyarelostforever.Thisdestructionhasgainedsuchaspeedthatintwodecadesninety percentofthepicturesinthisbookmaybecomeunrecognizable.”Thequalityofthephotogra phyisgenerallyexcellent.Thespringshotsexudegreeneryandvitality;theautumnshotsde pictadrybrownnessandsometimesappearwashedout.Butastheeditorssay,thedrycondi tionsmorefullyrevealthecontoursandstonesoftheancientroads.Eachphotographhasa brieflabeldescribingthelocationwithitsGreekorLatinnameaswelloldandnewTurkishvil lagenames.Asevenpagehistoricalintroductionbeginsthevolume.However,theeditorscon cedethatthevolumehaslimitedscholarlyinformationortechnicaldetailssincethiswasoutside theobjectiveofthebookaswellasbeyondtheirqualifications.Nevertheless,theinclusionofa mapofTurkeywiththelocationsoftheroadswouldhavebeenhelpful.Thereforethereader needsagoodatlasofTurkeysuchasthe Köy Köy Türkiye toassistinlocatingtheroads.The editorshavelaidthefoundationforclassicalandbiblicalscholarstocontinuetheprojectby mappingthelocationswithGPScoordinates.Forexample,sitesrelatedtothemarchoftheTen Thousandarenoted,whileroutesrelatedtoPaul’sjourneysareilluminated.Muchspaceisde votedtotheViawithalong,newlydiscoveredsectionofitsspurtodepicted.My ownunderstandingoftherouteofPaul’sfirstjourneybetweenPergaandPisidianhas beenclarifiedbytheeditors’work.WhileacknowledgingadebttotheBarringtonAtlas,Harada andCimok’sfindingswillrequirecorrectionsandadditionstobemadetoBarrington’sAnatolian pages.ThesevolumesareamustforseriousstudentsofAsiaMinorandanimportantcontribu tiontounderstandingtravelintheregion.

Fromtimetotime AMR willpublishinterviewswithscholarsworkinginAsia Minor.InthisreportProfessorCrawfordGreenewaltanswerssomequestions aboutandhisworkthere.In2008Prof.Greenewaltretiredasdirector oftheSardisexcavations.Greenewaltisprofessorofclassicalarchaeologyat theUniversityofCaliforniaatBerkeley( http://ls.berkeley.edu/dept/ahma/ faculty_greenewalt.html ).

2008 marks the 50th anniversary of the Sardis Expedition. How was this important milestone celebrated? Asymposiumonresultsoffieldwork—whathasbeenlearned,andimportantas pectsofthecitythathavenotbeenclarified—isbeingplanned.Ashort,oneactoperaonthe ancientlegend"JudgmentofMidas,"withmusicbyKamranInce,librettobyMiriamSeidel,is beingprepared. In 2008 you also retired as the excavation director. How long have you worked at the site, and when did you take over as its director? Ihaveparticipatedinfieldworkduringeveryseasonsince 1959;andwasappointedfielddirectorinDecember1976. What were some of the most significant things that occurred at Sardis during your tenure as di- rector? ThemostsignificantarchaeologicaldiscoveryistheonemadebyNancyandAndrew RamageoftheLydiancitywall.Thewallisanimpressivearchitecturalmonument,inplaces65 feetthickatitsbaseandstillstanding2530feethigh;andthethicklayerofdebriscreatedby thosepartsofitthatweredemolishedindestructionofthemid6thcenturyBCaccountsforthe goodpreservationofbothdefensesandnearbyhouses.If,asseemsplausible,thedestruction occurredduringthesiegeandcaptureofSardisbythePersiansinthe540sBC,thearchaeologi calevidence(whichincludesweapons,armament,andskeletalremainsofcasualties)richlyand vividlycomplementsancientliteraryaccounts(whichfocusonKingCroesusandtheAcropo lis).Lydianhouseruinsthatwereburiedunderthedestructiondebris,largelyexcavatedby NicholasCahillandbeingpublishedbyhim,preserverichassemblagesofhouseholdmaterials andsmallindustries.Othermajordiscoveries,madebyNicholasCahill,ChristopherRatté, ChristopherRoosevelt,andPhilipStinson,includesegmentsofLydiancitydefensesinother partsofthesite,monumentalterracingthatlandscapedtheinLydianandPersian times,andawellpreservedLydianhouseunderneaththeRomanTheater.Therecreationof Lydianroofandrevetmenttilesandtheirdisplayinarchitecturalcontext,supervisedbyEric HostetterandMichaelMorris;thecreationofanewstoragedepotwithadjoiningworkspacesby TeomanYalçinkaya,themonitoringandstorageofstudymaterialsbyElizabethGombosi,and thecreationofacomprehensiveandflexibledatab aseforinventoriedobjects,byGombosiand Cahillalsoaremajoraccomplishmentsoffieldworkduringthelastthreedecades. Will a separate volume on the synagogue be published? Avolumeonthesynagogueisin deedplannedaspartoftheArchaeologicalExplorationofSardisseries,andmostofitisat leastindraftform.Themostcomplexpartisthearchitecturalhistory,beingwrittenbyProf. AndrewSeager,whoisnowpreparingafinaldraft.TwoarticlesontheGreekandHebrew inscriptionswerepublishedintheHarvardTheologicalReviewin2001(Greekinscriptions,by JohnH.Kroll)and2002(Hebrewinscriptionsonlysix,allshortbyFrankM.Cross).There areothersectionsontheandthe"furniture";inrespectablebutnotfinalform.Alas, wedonothaveaprojectedpublicationdate. What projects lie ahead for the Sardis Expedition under the new director Nicholas Ca- hill? Vastareasofthesiteremaintobeexplored,byexcavationandothermeans(including survey,noninvasivegeophysicaltechniques,andthelike);andmajorquestionsremaintobe resolvede.g.,thebeginningsofSardis(diditexistintheEarlyBronzeAge?);thenatureof settlementintheLateBronzeAge(towhatextentwasitaffectedbyMycenaeanandHittite cultures?);administrativeandreligiousaspctsoftheLydiancity;thenatureofSardisinPer sianandHellenisticeras;thehistoryofthedeclineofSardisasagreaturbancenterinByz antineandlatereras.Archaeologicalfieldworkiscapableofclarifyingallthosequestionsand manyothers.PreservationofthebeautifullandscapesettingofSardisaswellasofthear chaeologicalsiteisalsoadeeplyfeltconcernoftheExpedition.ProfessorCahill,whohas participatedinfieldworkatSardissince1979,lovesSardisandknowssiteproblemsandpo tential;hewillsetprioritiescarefullyandpursuethemwithenergy,devotion,andwisdom. At the Gyges tumulus at Bintepe, a monogram was found that appeared twenty-five times. G. M.A. Hanfmann proposed that its interpretation was GuGu, the name of Gyges in the Assyr- ian records. This name has been linked to the Gog of the . Does this interpretation still stand, or have better suggestions been proposed? ThemonogramisunlikelytorefertoGy ges,aswasestablishedbyDavidNeelSmith;andthetumulusprobablywascreatednearlya centuryafterGyges'sdeath,asestablishedbyChristopherRatté.Rattésuggestedthatthe tumulusmaycommemorateanothermemberoftheMermnadDynasty,possiblythesonof Croesuswho,accordingtoHerodotus,waskilledinahuntingaccidentduringhisfather'slife time.
