  • The Route of Paul's First Journey to Pisidian Antioch
New Test. Stud. , pp. –. Printed in the United Kingdom © Cambridge University Press doi:10.1017/S002868850999004X The Route of Paul’s First Journey to Pisidian Antioch MARK WILSON University of South Africa, Pretoria, South Africa email: [email protected] The route of Paul’s first journey between Perga and Pisidian Antioch is still dis- puted. This article examines the three alternatives proposed by scholars. It explores the geographical and historical evidence for each route, looking especially at the extensive road system that existed in Pamphylia, Pisidia, and south Galatia in the first century. Bible atlases routinely depict one route and the reasons for this choice are discussed. Based on a review of the evidence, a fresh hypothesis for the route of the first journey is suggested. Keywords: Paul’s first journey, Perga, Pisidian Antioch, Via Sebaste, Roman roads, Acts .; . Introduction The routes that the apostle Paul took on his journeys across Asia Minor still remain in dispute. A case in point is the route of Paul’s first journey from Perga (Πέργη) to Pisidian Antioch. Scholars have suggested three possible routes with variations for this journey. Two of these routes are routinely depicted in Bible atlases, often with little awareness of the ancient road network or the topo- graphy of the area. On a popular level, the recent opening of the St Paul Trail in southern Turkey has also stirred up interest in the route of Paul’s first journey. Although the St Paul Trail does not follow the ancient routes exactly, Kate Clow’s experience in preparing the new path has provided fresh insights into the region’s history and topography.

  • The Biblical City of Antioch of Pisidia
Antioch Of Pisidia “But when they departed from Perga, they came to Antioch in Pisidia, and went into the synagogue on the Sabbath day and sat down.” (Acts 13:14) © 2020 David Padfield www.padfield.com Scripture taken from the New King James Version. Copyright 1982 by Thomas Nelson, Inc. Used by permission. All rights reserved. Antioch Of Pisidia Introduction I. Of the sixteen ancient cities in Turkey named Antioch, only two are of any significance to Bible students today. A. One is now called Antakya (Antioch of Syria; Antioch on the Orontes), and the other is Antioch of Pisidia (Pisidian Antioch). B. Both cities played a major part in the early days of the church. II. Around A.D. 50, Paul visited Antioch of Pisidia on his first evangelistic journey (Acts 13:13–14), and his first recorded sermon was preached there (Acts 13:15–51). Discussion I. The History Of Antioch A. Antioch of Pisidia is located ½ mile north of the village of Yalvaç in the Isparta province in southern Turkey. B. After the death of Alexander the Great, Seleucus I Nicator, founder of the Seleucid Dynasty, took control of Pisidia (c. 330–280 B.C.). 1. “Seleucus Nicator I had nearly 60 cities founded and gave to 16 of them the name of his father and son: Antiochos” (Ünal Demirer, Pisidian Antioch, 20). 2. The cities he captured were soon Hellenized, and fortified cities were built at strategically important places. 3. Judging from coins minted around that time, the city must have been economically prosperous. C. In 188 B.C., the Romans defeated Antiochus III and declared Antioch of Pisidia a free city.

  • 1 Smithsonian National Numismatic Collection
SMITHSONIAN NATIONAL NUMISMATIC COLLECTION Overview of ancient Greek and Roman coins December 13, 2016 Presented here is a general overview of the ancient Greek and Roman coins within the Smithsonian Institution’s National Numismatic Collection, held at the National Museum of American History. An assessment of these coins was performed over the course of three days in late October and early November, 2016 by Christian Cloke (Smithsonian Intern), Andrew Burnett (Former Deputy Director, British Museum), Emily Pearce Seigerman (Museum Specialist), and Jennifer Gloede (Outreach and Collections Specialist). This exercise was conducted quite rapidly, and while some coins were likely misidentified or miscounted, it has also resulted in the first holistic record of this part of the collection. This assessment has revealed some exceptional strengths of the collection, including world-class holdings of eastern Roman provincial and civic coin issues and a number of older hoards, the study of which may contribute much to our understanding of the chronology of ancient coinage and economic history. A fuller record of this assessment can be found in an excel file listing Greek coins in one table and Roman in another, available on the website of the National Numismatic Collection (http://americanhistory.si.edu/national-numismatic-collection). The collection has a good representation of all areas of ancient coinage, totalling 26,972 pieces (far more than the 12,000–13,000 pieces it was estimated to contain prior to this assessment). The overall numbers of Greek and Roman coins we have tallied are: Gold Silver Bronze Unsorted/Mixed Totals Greek 131 4,775 15,999 N/A 20,905 Roman 217 2,093 3,609 148 6,067 As can be seen, the Greek collection is ultimately stronger and larger than the Roman collection, though both constitute substantial scholarly resources (and among the “Greek” coins are a great many of the Roman period, minted in the Greek eastern Mediterranean).
