Levent Oral President
The Apostle Paul is believed to be the second-most influential figure in the formation of Christianity after Jesus himself. Asia Minor, today’s Turkey, is where many of the events associated with Paul’s life and ministry took place. During his missionary journeys, Paul spent most of his time – around 60% - in Turkey. Paul was a native of Tarsus in south of Turkey. From Antioch to Troas, from Philippi to Corinth, from Malta to Rome we can follow the routes travelled during his journeys by land and sea. We can even see some of the Roman roads upon which he walked. In museums we can encounter the artefacts that the Apostle saw and touched. At this Travel Guide, we trace the footsteps of Paul in Turkey, Cyprus, Greece, Malta, Italy.

5 Timeline for Paul’s Journeys
***There are few time anchors to date when Paul arrived at the destinations mentioned in Acts. ***The following times are largely speculative guesses regarding the length of the apostle’s journeys and the amount of time spent in each of the locations. For the sake of the chronology, I will assume that Paul spent one month in most of the cities that he visited according to Acts. It does not appear likely that a church could be established in these places in less time. Acts mentioned longer visits at some cities, such as Corinth and Ephesus. One must bear in mind that Paul and his companions also spent time in other cities and towns not mentioned in Acts. Luke may have omitted those sites from his narrative because the visits were more brief or because the villagers were unresponsive to the Gospel. These visits may have been as short as a week or less. One must also factor in the time taken to travel the distances to each city. One might assume 15 miles per day over level ground, but perhaps half that in the mountains. Journeys on the seas by ship were faster, averaging 60 miles per day, depending upon the winds. Mark R. Fairchild, PhD

***On the journey returning from Derbe to Lystra, Iconium, Pisidian Antioch and Atallia probably would have been shorter visits, perhaps two weeks in each city.

20 ICONIUM Acts 13:51–14:5; 16:2 Acts 14:1-7 Paul and Barnabas spend some months at Iconium in 47AD, going as usual to the Jewish synagogue to preach. Many Jews and Gentiles believe, but those who reject the Good News about Jesus hatch a plot to stone Paul for what they consider to be blasphemy. Paul and Barnabas hear about the plot and escape to Lystra. Don’t forget to visit the nearby St Helen (Constantine’s mother) Church from 325 AD.
LYSTRA Acts 14:6–23; 16:1–5 Lystra (probably the hometown of Timothy) served as a market town of Lycaonia in south central Turkey. Paul preached here on his first missionary journey (Acts 14:6-22). After he healed a lame man, the superstitious citizens immediately assumed that he was Hermes (messenger of Zeus) and Barnabas was Zeus himself (same as the Roman god Jupiter). There was a temple to Zeus near the gates of the city, and a statue of Hermes dedicated to Zeus was found here as well. The priest of the Temple of Zeus brings garlanded bulls to the city gates to sacrifice to Paul and Barnabas. But the disciples tear their clothes and protest that they are only human. Today, there is not much to see because there is not an ongoing excavation in Lystra.
DERBE Acts 14:6–7, 20–23; 16:1 Derbe was a city in the district of Lycaonia in the Roman province of Galatia in south central Turkey. It sat on a major route connecting Iconium to Laranda and was about 60 miles from Lystra. Paul and Barnabas fled to Derbe and Lystra on his first missionary journey when city officials of Iconium plotted to stone them (Acts 14:6-21). Paul does not mention suffering any persecution in Derbe (2 Tim 3:11). In 1956, an inscription was found at the site Kerti Hoyuk, showing it to be the true Derbe. A second inscription was later found, marking the grave of a bishop of Derbe. This shows great Christian influence in Derbe centuries after Paul visited the city.
21 ANTIOCH (Antakya) Acts 13:13–14; 14:25 Antioch of Syria is located along the Orontes River in modern-day Turkey. In the second half of the first century B.C.E., Herod the Great paved the main streets of Antioch with marble. The city also became a center for early Christianity, playing a prominent role in the ministry of the apostle Paul in the New Testament. According to the book of Acts, it Peter Church, Antioch was at Antioch that followers of Jesus were Barnabas and Saul Sent Off (Acts 13:1-3) first called “Christians” (Acts 11:26). Tradition The Council’s Letter to Gentile Believers (Acts 15:22-35) says that Peter preached and taught at the St Priscilla, Aquila and Apollos (Acts 18:18-28) Peter Cave Church in Antioch while he was in the city 47-54 AD.
PSIDIAN ANTIOCH (Yalvaç) Acts 13:14–50; 14:19, 21–23 The city was founded in the 3rd century by either Antiochus I or II, but it only achieved prominence after its refounding as a Roman colony by Augustus in 25 BC. Three members of the imperial family served as honorary magistrates of the city from 15 BC to AD 35, attesting to the importance of this Galatian city. The remains of Church of St Paul are the traditional location of the synagogue that Paul preached in (Acts 13:14- 52). In this church a mosaic floor has been found with Psalm 42:4 inscribed on it. We suggest to visit the nearby Yalvac Museum.
PERGA (Perge) Acts 13:13–14; 14:25 The capital of Pamphylia, on the coast of Asia Minor. Paul and his companions landed at this place from Cyprus on their first missionary journey (Acts 13:13, 14), and here Mark forsook the party and returned to Jerusalem. Some time afterwards Paul and Barnabas again visited this city and “preached the word” (14:25). It stood on the banks of the river Cestrus, some 7 miles from its mouth, and was a place of some commercial importance. Perga is located 16 kms East of Antalya. Some remains of the ancient site are displayed at the award winning Antalya Archaeology Museum.
