We report 80 literature articles which include 14 new taxa described from Texas. We also report on 120 new records of fleshy basdiomycetous fungi collected primarily from southeast Texas. RESUMEN Este es un segundo artículo que documenta el registro de nuevas especies de hongos carnosos basidiomicetos, incluyendo artículos antiguos y recientes. Reportamos 80 artículos científicamente relacionados con estas especies que incluyen 14 taxones con holotipos en Texas. PART I—MYCOLOGICAL LITERATURE ON TEXAS FLESHY BASIDIOMYCOTA Lewis and Ovrebo (2009) previously reported on literature for Texas fleshy Basidiomycota and also listed new vouchered records for Texas of that group. Presented here is an update to the listing which includes literature published since 2009 and also includes older references that we previously had not uncovered. The authors’ primary research interests center around gilled mushrooms and boletes so perhaps the list that follows is most complete for the fungi of these groups. We have, however, attempted to locate references for all fleshy basidio- mycetous fungi. -

Wood Chip Fungi: Agrocybe putaminum in the San Francisco Bay Area Else C. Vellinga Department of Plant and Microbial Biology, 111 Koshland Hall, Berkeley CA 94720-3102 [email protected] Abstract Agrocybe putaminum was found growing on wood chips in central coastal California; this appears to be the first record for North America. A short description of the species is given. Its habitat plus the characteristics of wood chip denizens are discussed. Wood chips are the fast food of the fungal world. The desir- able wood is exposed, there is a lot of it, and often the supply is replenished regularly. It is an especially good habitat for mush- room species that like it hot because a thick layer of wood chips is warmed relative to the surrounding environment by the activity of bacteria and microscopic fungi (Brown, 2003; Van den Berg and Vellinga, 1998). Thirty years ago wood chips were a rarity, but nowadays they are widely used in landscaping and gardening. A good layer of chips prevents weeds from germinating and taking over, which means less maintenance and lower costs. Chips also diminish evaporation and keep moisture in the soil. Trees and shrubs are often shredded and dumped locally, but there is also long-dis- tance transport of these little tidbits. Barges full of wood mulch cruise the Mississippi River, and trucks carry the mulch from city to city. This fast food sustains a steady stream of wood chip fungi that, as soon as they are established, fruit in large flushes and are suddenly everywhere. Fungus and Lichen Genera in the NEMF Database Taxonomic hierarchy: phyllum > class (-etes) > order (-ales) > family (-ceae) > genus. Total number of genera in the database: 526 Anamorphic fungi (see p. 4), which are disseminated by propagules not formed from cells where meiosis has occurred, are presently not grouped by class, order, etc. Most propagules can be referred to as "conidia," but some are derived from unspecialized vegetative mycelium. A significant number are correlated with fungal states that produce spores derived from cells where meiosis has, or is assumed to have, occurred. These are, where known, members of the ascomycetes or basidiomycetes. However, in many cases, they are still undescribed, unrecognized or poorly known. I thank you all for the PRESIDENT’S confidence in re-electing me. In my first message last year I highlighted four goals. I will spend this message looking back at how we did and what we have yet to do with those MESSAGE goals and other challenges. The first goal was “to continue to ensure positive value for new as well as existing mem- bers.” The MMS remains one of the biggest bargains out there. We once again provided a full slate of foray opportunities to our members and guests, and filled our meetings with educational content. We hosted a fabulous cooking demo from a highly regarded Twin Cities chef, and were honored to have both our scientific advisors, noted mycologist Dr. Tom Volk from the University of Wisconsin, Lacrosse, and Dr. Scott Bates from the Uni- versity of Minnesota, give presentations. We held another fabulous photo contest and presented at Da Vinci Fest and the State Fair, giving many of our members the opportu- nity to assist in presenting to the general public. I would like to expand this going forward by establishing a list of our members interested in giving mushroom talks and presenta- tions, and assisting them in getting started. Many requests come to our society each year for speakers, reflecting the interest the general public now has in foraging and natu- ral foods. -

MUSHROOMS OF THE OTTAWA NATIONAL FOREST Compiled by Dana L. Richter, School of Forest Resources and Environmental Science, Michigan Technological University, Houghton, MI for Ottawa National Forest, Ironwood, MI March, 2011 Introduction There are many thousands of fungi in the Ottawa National Forest filling every possible niche imaginable. A remarkable feature of the fungi is that they are ubiquitous! The mushroom is the large spore-producing structure made by certain fungi. Only a relatively small number of all the fungi in the Ottawa forest ecosystem make mushrooms. Some are distinctive and easily identifiable, while others are cryptic and require microscopic and chemical analyses to accurately name. This is a list of some of the most common and obvious mushrooms that can be found in the Ottawa National Forest, including a few that are uncommon or relatively rare. The mushrooms considered here are within the phyla Ascomycetes – the morel and cup fungi, and Basidiomycetes – the toadstool and shelf-like fungi. There are perhaps 2000 to 3000 mushrooms in the Ottawa, and this is simply a guess, since many species have yet to be discovered or named. This number is based on lists of fungi compiled in areas such as the Huron Mountains of northern Michigan (Richter 2008) and in the state of Wisconsin (Parker 2006). The list contains 227 species from several authoritative sources and from the author’s experience teaching, studying and collecting mushrooms in the northern Great Lakes States for the past thirty years. Although comments on edibility of certain species are given, the author neither endorses nor encourages the eating of wild mushrooms except with extreme caution and with the awareness that some mushrooms may cause life-threatening illness or even death.
