Although it is hoped that this document is as complete as possible, other sources may contain more up to date information, e.g. the manufacturer’s website. Section 1 contains general information about the type. Section 2 contains information about the type that is MANDATORY and must be complied with. Section 3 contains advisory information that owners and inspectors should review to help them maintain the aircraft in an airworthy condition. If due consideration and circumstances suggest that compliance with the requirements in this section can safely be deferred, is not required or not applicable, then this is a permitted judgement call. This section also provides a useful repository for advisory information gathered through defect reports and experience.

Primarily I would like to express my sincere gratitude to Prof. Jianguo Lin and Dr. Daniel Balint for the opportunity they had given me to join this research programme. I am most grateful to my supervisor, Prof. Jianguo Lin, for his invaluable guidance throughout my research. I have benefitted greatly from his immense knowledge of the field and his vision. I would like to express my very great appreciation to Dr. Zhusheng Shi for his constructive advice and assistance. He had shared his time with me so generously and worked so tirelessly to safeguard the quality and accuracy of my work. I enjoyed working with him very much. My grateful thanks extend to Prof. Trevor Dean for his much useful advice and critique during the design phase of the flexible creep-age forming tool. I also thank Mr. Yong Li and Mr. Yo-Lun Yang for their occasional help on my work. The technical support I had received from Mr. Suresh Viswamathan Chettiar, Mr. Mark Holloway and Dr. Judith Thei and the collaboration with them in the laboratories had enabled on-time delivery of the experimental results essential to completing this thesis; for that I thank them.

2 TABLE OF CONTENTS Vorwort des Reihenherausgebers Rolf-Jürgen Gleitsmann 1. MooseAir #5: Dornier Do-J „Wal“ (Whale) 23. April 2008 MOOSEAIR #5 Version 1.0.0 DORNIER DO-J „WAL“ (WHALE) The „Whale“ was one of the most successful flying boats in German aircraft history. After its maiden flight on 6 November 1922 more than 250 Whales were produced and flown all around the world. Most famous was probably the „Amundsen-Whale“ used by the Norwegian explorer to fly to the North Pole, but also other re- cord flights were undertaken in the 20s and 30s of the last century. The Dornier „Wal“ (Whale) was one of the best-known and most successful flying boats ever developed. The aircraft was gigantic against other aircraft of its day. It completed its maiden flight on No- vember 6, 1922 and its total production ran to more than 200 exam- ples. To avoid violating the terms of the Treaty of Versailles, from July 1922 production of the flying boat was carried out at Pisa in Italy on the premises of Costruzioni Meccaniche Aeronautiche S.A.
