Foreword DOI: 10.7592/methis.v17i21/22.14581 Good research and publication ideas often come on the spur of the moment, and spontaneity gives energy to longer processes. This joint Special Issue of Methis was sparked by editor-in-chief Marin Laak’s idea on the last day of a recent collaborative conference, who was gladly joined by the conference organizer, Władysław Witalisz. The present volume is a result of the transdisciplinary conference “Across Borders: Cultures in Dialogue” co-organised by the Estonian Literary Museum and Państwowa Wyższa Szkoła Zawodowa im. St. Pigonia w Krośnie (Krosno State College) in Tartu on 27–29 April 2017. It was the 7th conference of the series and it brought together international scholars working on culture, literature, linguistics, folklore, communication, humour studies, translation and interpreting. The general focus of the “Across Borders” conferences has always been the dynamics of con- tacts between different cultures, languages, literatures, genres, media and forms of communication. This time the by-word was the concept of “dialogue” which the participants interpreted variously as influence, reception, exchange, transition, translation, crossing genres and media. Intercultural encounters accompanying the recent movement of individuals and groups receive a variety of expressions and call for a debate in a transdisciplinary context. The conference was an occasion for many discussions on the broad subject of cultural neighbourhood, especially related to: • minority cultures and literature, migration and narration, the Other • autobiography and identity • communication styles, pragmatics of intercultural communication • communication in institutions • folkloric communication, ethnolinguistics • humour and irony in cultural context • cross-cultural aspects of translation and (language) teaching • English as an international lingua franca, language contacts • culture and the teaching of languages, global learning, innovation in education • contemporary culture and media, transnational/transmedial cultural texts, cultural and linguistic globalization The Special Issue consists of 11 papers, which reflect the diversity of the confer- ence. Several of these focus on theatre as a complex and multifaceted medium, 5 Methis. Ajaloolises sarjas segab Karl Ristikivi müüte ja ajalugu (Neithal 1994: 20), mille tagajärjel moodustub neis müüdilisusele iseloomulik isomorfne struktuur (Lepik 2007: 175). Seetõttu leidub sarjas palju sündmuste, tegelaste ja motiivide korduvaid analooge ning selle ülesehitus haakub gooti katedraali filosoofiaga. Need võtted loovad maailma, kus olulisel kohal on saatuslikkus ja ettemääratus, tekitades tunde, et sündmustiku taga on veel mingi peidetud reaalsus (Krull 1996: 117). Karl Ristikivi on kirjas Uku Masingule 26. märtsist 1969 avaldanud soovi struktureerida oma ajalooliste romaanide sarja gooti katedraali eeskujul (vt Hinrikus 1996: 175). Dante „Jumalikku komöödiat“ on nimetatud „viimaseks katedraaliks“ (Duby 1999: 244) ja see järgib samamoodi nagu gooti katedraalid varakristliku teoloogi Pseudo-Dionysios Areopagita filosoofiat. Pseudo-Dionysiose traktaadis „Theologia mystica“ esitatud kujutluse kohaselt on Jumal mitteloodud algne valgus. Ülimast olendist väljavoolav kiirgus loob hierarhilise korras- tatud maailma. Eri tasanditel asetsevad maised olendid on võimelised jumalikku valgust vastu võtma ja edasi andma vastavalt oma asendile hierarhias. Kõrgemad olendid on valguse vastuvõtmisel ja peegeldamisel ehk jumaliku tõe tunnetamisel võimekamad kui alumiste tasandite omad. Loodud olenditelt liigub valgus omakorda tagasi Jumala juurde. Eri tasandite olendid on seotud armastusega, tekitades korrapärase ühtekuuluva maailma. Gootika on selguse, loogika ja kasvava kiirguse kunst. (Duby 1999: 134–145.)     The exhibition When the Stage Lights Came On... tells ... the multi-layered story of a theatre by displaying the folio of prints Wanemuine 100, which focuses on the beginning of the Vanemuine Theatre. The folio ties together two important moments in time: the birth of Estonian language theatre and the beginning of the 1970s, when the local theatre life was influenced by its Soviet environment but also by the begin- nings of the theatrical renewal. Inspired by these layers, the folio is the impetus and central exhibit of the present exhibition. The students of the Estonian Academy of Arts who curated the exhibition travelled from the world of art to the world of theatre and brought a small piece of Estonian theatre history to the museum. In all probability, the folio, which is part of the Tartu Art Museum’s collections, has never been exhibited. This allowed us to unravel the collages from the folio like detectives and to delve into their sources to bet- ter understand the backstory of the folio. As a result of the research, this playbill that you are reading contains most of the photos that form the basis of the collages. Archival materials tell a multifaceted story that covers the period from the birth of Estonian language theatre up to the founding of professional theatre. It includes images of the people associated with theatre, the public festivals, the costumes and the theatre buildings. The foundation of the Vanemuine Theatre took place during the phase of active construction of Estonian nationality. It focused on a national narrative, on connecting individual events and celebrating anniversaries that assisted in asserting a collective sense of continuity.
