    During the 19th century, while many Americans went west to nd gold, Othniel Charles Marsh went west to nd dinosaurs. He struck it rich for everyone interested in the history of life on Earth. Othniel Charles Marsh was born in Lockport, Niagara County, on October 29, 1831. The Marshes were small farmers, but Othniel’s uncle on his mother’s side was George Peabody, a wealthy banker and the “father of American philanthropy.” After Othniel’s mother died when he was three, Peabody managed her estate so Othniel would get a generous inheritance when he turned 21. Marsh used the money to enroll in the Phillips Andover Academy, where an interest in minerals became a passion for collecting fossils – the remains of ancient life in mineral form. Peabody later paid Marsh’s way through Yale. Marsh met Darwin and other paleontologists during his advanced studies in Europe. After he took over the Yale professorship in 1866, he sought more pieces of the evolutionary puzzle in the vast American west. Between 1870 and 1873 Marsh led four expeditions in search of fossils.

Paleontological resource inventories within units of the National Park Service have revealed that body and trace fossils of non-avian dinosaurs have been documented in at least 21 National Park Service areas. In addition there are two historically associated occurrences, one equivocal occurrence, two NPS areas with dinosaur tracks in building stone, and one case where fossils have been found immediately outside of a monument’s boundaries. To date, body fossils of non- avian dinosaurs are documented at 14 NPS areas, may also be present at another, and are historically associated with two other parks. Dinosaur trace fossils have been documented at 17 NPS areas and are visible in building stone at two parks. Most records of NPS dinosaur fossils come from park units on the Colorado Plateau, where body fossils have been found in Upper Jurassic and Lower Cretaceous rocks at many locations, and trace fossils are widely distributed in Upper Triassic and Jurassic rocks. Two NPS units are particularly noted for their dinosaur fossils: Dinosaur National Monument (Upper Triassic through Lower Cretaceous) and Big Bend National Park (Upper Cretaceous).

So how do paleontologists know about extinct animals? Solve some of the mysteries of ancient adaptations and behaviors yourself. Use evidence to make inferences about ancient animals by examining fossils, artifacts, and museum specimens. Includes a guided experience in Dinosaur Hall. Outcomes: Students will be able to recognize the purpose of adaptations and make predictions about the function of various parts based on morphology. Students will understand the significance that fossils hold within natural history. Students will be able to conduct a scientific investigation and come to logical conclusions through the use of models and observations. Since its founding, the Academy has worked with many famous paleontologists such as Dr. Joseph Leidy, Edward Drinker Cope, and recently Dr. Ted Daeschler, co-discoverer of transitional fossil Tiktaalik roseae . The Academy is also home to the fossil collection of President Thomas Jefferson, the first dinosaur fossils collected in North America, and a fossil specimen collected by Lewis and Clark.     The Bone Wars: Design and Development, Social Media and Community Paul Gestwicki and Charlie Ecenbarger Ball State University Abstract The Bone Wars is an original educational video game about the historic 19th-century feud between rival paleontologists, Othniel C. Marsh and Edward D. Cope. This two-player game explores their race to claim dig sites and discover new species, but its only by publishing their results that the players earn the fame that delivers victory. Just as their historic characters did, a successful player will end the game with little money, few friends, many publications, and crates of unanalyzed fossils. The game was designed and developed in a student-centered, faculty-mentored studio experience by a team of ten undergraduates and one graduate student. The team followed established practices of game design and agile software development, making effective use of a dedicated lab environment. The incremental and iterative development process was publicly shared on the team’s blog and on Twitter, and we describe the impact that this had on the team and on the community of potential players. The paper will explore the history of dinosaur discoveries, their display methodologies in museums, and how pop culture, including movies and video games, have influenced museum displays and public perception over time. The lack of updated dinosaur exhibits in smaller local museums leads to disbelief, or an outright denial, of new information such as feathered dinosaurs. Entertainment, such as movies and video games that have non-avian dinosaurs as part of their presentation, are examined over the past thirty years to determine how accurate or inaccurate they are to the understanding of dinosaurs from their respective years.
