PAUL 3109 North Calvert Street, Baltimore, Maryland 21218 ABSTRACTT- he presence of Late Cretaceous social dinosaurs in polar regions confronted them with winter conditions of extended dark, coolness, breezes, and precipitation that could best be coped with via an endothermic homeothermic physiology of at least the tenrec level. This is true whether the dinosaurs stayed year round in the polar regime-which in North America extended from Alaska south to Montana-or if they migrated away from polar winters. More reptilian physiologies fail to meet the demands of such winters -in certain key ways, a· point tentatively confirmed by the apparent failure of giant Late Cretaceous phobosuchid crocodilians to dwell north of Montana. Low metabolisms were also insufficient for extended annual migrations away from and towards the poles. It is shown that even high metabolic rate dinosaurs probably remained in their polar habitats year-round. The possibility that dinosaurs had avian-mammalian metabolic systems, and may have borne insulation at least seasonally, severely limits their use as polar paleoclimatic and Earth axial tilt indicators. Polar dinosaurs may have been a center of dinosaur evolution. The possible ability of polar dinosaurs to cope with conditions of cool and dark challenges theories that a gradual temperature decline, or a sudden, meteoritic or volcanic induced collapse in temperature and sunlight, destroyed the dinosaurs. Witton, Darren Naish, and John Conway The discipline of palaeoart, a branch of natural history art dedicated to the recon- struction of extinct life, is an established and important component of palaeontological science and outreach. For more than 200 years, palaeoartistry has worked closely with palaeontological science and has always been integral to the enduring popularity of prehistoric animals with the public. Indeed, the perceived value or success of such products as popular books, movies, documentaries, and museum installations can often be linked to the quality and panache of its palaeoart more than anything else. HISTORY OF ART UCL 2 I, PANDORA KATHLEEN CRUISE SYPEREK confirm that the work presented in this thesis is my own. Where information has been derived from other sources, I confirm that this has been indicated in the thesis. ______________________________________________ 3 ABSTRACT Several collections of brilliant objects were put on display following the opening of the British Museum (Natural History) in South Kensington in 1881. These objects resemble jewels both in their exquisite lustre and in their hybrid status between nature and culture, science and art. This thesis asks how these jewel-like hybrids – including shiny preserved beetles, iridescent taxidermised hummingbirds, translucent glass jellyfish as well as crystals and minerals themselves – functioned outside of normative gender expectations of Victorian museums and scientific culture. Such displays’ dazzling spectacles refract the linear expectations of earlier natural history taxonomies and confound the narrative of evolutionary habitat dioramas. As such, they challenge the hierarchies underlying both orders and their implications for gender, race and class. Objects on display are compared with relevant cultural phenomena including museum architecture, natural history illustration, literature, commercial display, decorative art and dress, and evaluated in light of issues such as transgressive animal sexualities, the performativity of objects, technologies of visualisation and contemporary aesthetic and evolutionary theory. Feminist theory in the history of science and new materialist philosophy by Donna Haraway, Elizabeth Grosz, Karen Barad and Rosi Braidotti inform analysis into how objects on display complicate nature/culture binaries in the museum of natural history. -

MEMORIAL TO BARNUM BROWN (1873-1963) G. EDWARD LEWIS U. S. Geological Survey, Denver, Colorado Barnum Brown, the last and most successful of the great fossil hunters who led expeditions to the far corners of the earth during the Golden Age of vertebrate paleontological exploration, died on 5 February, 1963. Nothing short of a book would be adequate to do justice to this remarkable man's full life, his explora- tions, and other scientific achievements: he was associated with the American Museum of Natural History in New York from 1897 to 1963; although he did not explore the South Sea Islands, Madagas- car, or the Antipodes, he ranged far and wide over the major continents of the world and covered vast areas literally step by step. Barnum's parents were of old American stock: William Brown was a Virginian, born in 1833, who travelled westward to Wisconsin, where he married Clara Silver near Monticello, where she was born in 1840. They loaded their possessions into an ox-drawn covered wagon in 1859 and headed westward with their first child, Clara Melissa. They averaged 10 miles a day on the way to Kansas Territory where, near Lickskillet in Osage County, a second daughter, Alice Elizabeth, was born on 4 January 1860. Nearby in the same county was a place underlain by coal where they built a one-room cabin on Carbon Hill, to the west of which Carbondale sprang up some years later. The cabin doors were closed by flaps of canvas; the windows were covered with greased paper; there were cots, packing boxes, and barrel chairs for furniture. -

ABSTRACT Allosaurus is one of the best known theropod dinosaurs from the Jurassic and a crucial taxon in phylogenetic analyses. On the basis of an in-depth, firsthand study of the bulk of Allosaurus specimens housed in North American institutions, we describe here a new theropod dinosaur from the Upper Jurassic Morrison Formation of Western North America, Allosaurus jimmadseni sp. nov., based upon a remarkably complete articulated skeleton and skull and a second specimen with an articulated skull and associated skeleton. The present study also assigns several other specimens to this new species, Allosaurus jimmadseni, which is characterized by a number of autapomorphies present on the dermal skull roof and additional characters present in the postcrania. In particular, whereas the ventral margin of the jugal of Allosaurus fragilis has pronounced sigmoidal convexity, the ventral margin is virtually straight in Allosaurus jimmadseni. The paired nasals of Allosaurus jimmadseni possess bilateral, blade-like crests along the lateral margin, forming a pronounced nasolacrimal crest that is absent in Allosaurus fragilis. Excelentes exemplos são os vertebrados fósseis e os dinossauros. A evolução gradual destes animais de corpo reptiliano e sangue frio até às aves de sangue quente que hoje dominam tantos habitats terrestres é exemplificada por milhares de fósseis. É hoje claro que os dinossau- ros carnívoros terópodes deram origem às aves, o que é patenteado por vários fósseis de dinossauros com penas. A origem de outros grupos de vertebrados como os cetáceos, os anfíbios e até os humanos está hoje bem suportada pelo registo fóssil. Aqui abordamos os dinossauros como exemplos de evolução, escolhendo casos curiosos e fascinantes, e dando destaque a exemplos portugueses. Os dinossauros eram e são répteis que têm os membros posteriores, as per- nas, numa posição vertical. Ou seja, os fémures dos dinossauros tinham uma posição próxima à vertical, por debaixo do corpo, na chamada postura para- sagital, ao contrário dos outros répteis, que se posiciona de lado. Nestes, os fé- mures apresentam-se numa posição horizontalizada. Isso implica uma forma de locomoção distinta e mais eficiente: os dinossauros não-avianos primitivos já corriam de forma semelhante a uma avestruz, enquanto os demais répteis deslocam-se ziguezagueando, com os membros ao lado do corpo, como vemos num lagarto.
