    Krigshistorie Karl XII, Verdenskrig KJEØA The island of Kjeøa rose from the ocean in 6500 BC. The rising land connected the island to the main- land in 1250 BC. Today the highest hill reaches all of 59 metres. Due to its strategic location by the sail- ing lane into Halden, a provisional enclosed entrenchment was built in 1675 and later this was expanded into a number of earthwork fortifi- 7_Vue-d'Østre-Sponnevig_HA-Grosch_HhS.jpg cations in 1676-77. These served an outpost of Fredriksten Fortress and as the base of operations for forays into the county of Bohuslän in Sweden. The entrenchment at Kjeøa The entrenchment has a strategic location by the sailing lane into Halden. A provisional enclosed wooden entrenchment was built in 1675. The Danish Governor in Norway, Ulrik Fredrik Gyldenløve, built a number of entrenchments (1676-1677) of wood, earth and stone as an outpost for Fredriksten fortress and a base of operations for forays into the county of Bohuslän in Sweden. The entrenchment had a permanent commander under the command of the fort in Fredrikshald from 1689. During the period 1698 – 1701 the entrenchment was renovated with a stone wall encircling a massive tower with bombproof rooms on the lowest floor and a battery of canons on the top. The remnants of the powder magazine and the massive central tower still exist. Danish Kings Kristian 5 (1685) and Fredrik 4 (1704) visited the entrenchment. Problems for the enemy During the attack by Swedish King Charles 12 on Norway in 1716, the entrenchment effectively stopped Swedish ships from passing, and it caused problems for the enemy when a bridge was to be built across Svinesund.

Byen har i mer enn 100 år hatt kjente malere på besøk, noe som har gjort Åsgårdstrand kjent som kunstnerby. Edvard Munch har malt mange av sine mesterverk her og han tilbrakte mange somre i Åsgårdstrand. Munch levde et bekymringsløst sommerliv her og var godt likt av lokalbefolkningen. I museet er alt bevart slik det var når Munch bodde her. Han kjøpte huset i 1898 og eide huset helt til sin død. Den opprinnelige atelierbygningen er revet, men en annen er satt opp på samme plass. Av alle de steder Edvard Munch levde og virket som kunstner, er det kanskje i Åsgårdstrand han har etterlatt seg mest tydelige spor. Her står det eneste intakte hjemmet bevart etter kunstneren – og landskapet lar seg lett knytte til Munchs kunstverk. Edvard Munch var en av de første som tok selfie, et mye brukt bildemotiv i nåtiden. Karljohansvern i Horten Karljohansvern var tidligere Horten Værft, og ble etablert i 1818. Området fulgte en utvikling fra å være et ferjested til å bli en viktig marinestasjon for Forsvaret, for så å bli til et sivilt samfunn med ulike private aktører, slik det er i dag. Arkitekturen er særegen og følger ulike stilepoker. De eldste husene er fra gården Horten. Mange av bygningene ble oppført like etter at Marinen etablerte hovedbasen her i 1819. Oppføring av bygninger har etter hvert fulgt den teknologiske utviklingen og viser ulike byggestiler typiske for sin tid.

Preparing for Take-Off : Th e Early Eighteenth Century Northern Politics and Peter the Great On the political stage, the seventeenth century in northern Europe had not been lacking in drama and bloodshed, and the eighteenth similarly started with major military turbulence, especially in the north-eastern corner. Th e Great Northern War, which lasted from 1700 till 1721, was to have far- reaching consequences for many years to follow. Largely connected with Sweden’s Baltic supremacy in the previous century, the war started with a number of states – Russia, Denmark-Norway, Poland-Lithuania and Saxony – uniting in a Northern Alliance against Sweden. But the architect of the war was Russia. In July 1700, the country negotiated a thirty-year truce with the Turks, providing security to the south, but the fi reworks on 18 August to celebrate the happy event actually carried an ominous warning, because the very next day Russia declared war on Sweden (Wilson 2009, 71). In Russia as well as Sweden there was a young and extremely ambitious monarch on the throne. Both were destined to leave indelible marks on national as well as European history. When the war broke out, the Swedish King Carl XII was no more than eighteen and had only acquired the reins of power three years earlier; Russia’s Peter I, who was later to earn the epithet “the Great”, was twenty-eight, and had eff ectively only ruled the country since 1696. Carl XII has been called the last of the great Swedish warrior kings, and in the fi rst phase of the war he certainly achieved some stunning military victories.
