  • Dartmouth Conservation Area Appraisal
Dartmouth Conservation Area Appraisal Conservation Areas are usually located in the older parts of our towns and villages. They are places whose surviving historic, architectural and locally distinctive features make them special. Conservation area designation highlights the need to preserve and reinforce these qualities. The policies followed by the District Council when assessing proposals affecting conservation areas are set out in the South Hams Local Development Framework, while the Supplementary Planning Document ‘New Work in Conservation Areas’ explains how to achieve compliance with them. This is essential because the Council has a statutory duty to approve proposals only if they “preserve or enhance the character or appearance” of the conservation area. The purpose of this appraisal is to set out what makes the Dartmouth Conservation Area special, what needs to be conserved and what needs to be improved. Four extensions to the conservation area are proposed and described The contents are based on an earlier draft Conservation Area Appraisal prepared for the District Council in 1999. January 2013 Dartmouth Dartmouth Conservation Area: Summary of Special Interest The position of Dartmouth at the mouth of the river Dart is of such strategic military and commercial importance, and its sheltered natural harbour so perfect, that it developed into an important town from the Middle Ages on, despite being inaccessible to wheeled transport until the 19th century. The advent of Victoria Road, Newcomen Road and later, College Way may have changed all that, but much of the character of the ancient, pedestrian town has survived. While it addresses the water, Dartmouth is a town of intimate spaces, unexpected flights of steps or pathways and steep, narrow streets with architectural jewels like St Saviours Church or the houses of the Butterwalk set amongst them.

It argues that the architectural drawing techniques developed by master masons in the late twelfth century continued to be taught to the King’s masons well into the sixteenth, and that these drawing techniques lie behind the innovations in sixteenth century topographical mapping.

www.gov.uk/englandcoastpath England Coast Path Stretch: Aust to Brean Down Report ABD 10: Brean Down Sluice to Brean Down Fort Part 10.1: Introduction Start Point: Brean Cross Sluice (grid reference: ST 3086 5623) End Point: Brean Down Fort (grid reference: ST 2806 5929) Relevant Maps: ABD 10a to ABD 10e 10.1.1 This is one of a series of linked but legally separate reports published by Natural England under section 51 of the National Parks and Access to the Countryside Act 1949, which make proposals to the Secretary of State for improved public access along and to this stretch of coast between Aust and Brean Down. 10.1.2 This report covers length ABD 10 of the stretch, which is the coast between Brean Cross Sluice and Brean Down Fort. It makes free-standing statutory proposals for this part of the stretch, and seeks approval for them by the Secretary of State in their own right under section 52 of the National Parks and Access to the Countryside Act 1949. 10.1.3 The report explains how we propose to implement the England Coast Path (“the trail”) on this part of the stretch, and details the likely consequences in terms of the wider ‘Coastal Margin’ that will be created if our proposals are approved by the Secretary of State. Our report also sets out: any proposals we think are necessary for restricting or excluding coastal access rights to address particular issues, in line with the powers in the legislation; and any proposed powers for the trail to be capable of being relocated on particular sections (“roll- back”), if this proves necessary in the future because of coastal change.

  • English Coast Defences
ENGLISH COAST DEFENCES GEORGE CLINCH PART I ENGLISH COAST DEFENCES PREHISTORIC CAMPS Round the coast of England there are many prehistoric earthworks of great extent and strength. These fall generally under the heads of hill-top fortresses and promontory camps. The works comprised under the former head are so arranged as to take the greatest possible advantage of natural hill-tops, often of large size. On the line where the comparatively level top developed into a more or less precipitous slope a deep ditch was dug, and the earth so removed was in most cases thrown outwards so as to form a rampart which increased the original difficulties of the sloping hill-side. The latter type of earthwork, called promontory camps from their natural conformation, were strengthened by the digging of a deep ditch, so as to cut off the promontory from the main table-land from which it projected, and in some cases the sides of the camp were made more precipitous by artificial scarping. An examination of these types of earthworks leads to the conclusion that they were probably tribal enclosures for the safe-guarding of cattle, etc.; that, strictly speaking, they were not military works at all, and, in any case, had no relation to national defence against enemies coming over-sea. One finds in different parts of the country a prevalent tradition that the Romans occupied the more ancient British hill-top strongholds, and the name “Caesar‟s Camp” is popularly applied to many of them. If such an occupation really took place it was, in all probability, only of a temporary character.
