PORT COMMISSION CITY & COUNTY OF SAN FRANCISCO

RESOLUTION NO. 07-53

WHEREAS, Charter Section B3.581 empowers the Port Commission with the authority and duty to use, conduct, operate, maintain, manage, regulate and control the lands within the Port jurisdiction; and

WHEREAS, since 1981, the Port of San Francisco has hosted San Francisco activities; and

WHEREAS, Fleet Week is a civic celebration and an annual opportunity for Northern Californians to honor the men and women serving in the , Coast Guard and Marines; and

WHEREAS, last year the Port was host to ten different U.S. Navy, U.S. Coast Guard and Canadian Navy vessels; and

WHEREAS, approximately 9,000 crewmembers on ten visiting ships from the U.S. Navy, U.S. Coast Guard and Canadian vessels arrived in the City to participate in Fleet Week; and

WHEREAS, the visiting ships were berthed at Piers 80, 30/32, 27, 15/17 and Pier 35; and

WHEREAS, the stars of Fleet Week were the USS Nimitz which was berthed in the Bay and the U.S. Navy which performed two air shows and celebrated their 60th year anniversary; and

WHEREAS, thousands of residents and visitors came to the Port to visit the various ships and watch the Blue Angels; and

WHEREAS, Fleet Week was one of the biggest event weekends on the Bay for our excursion industry; and

WHEREAS, Hornblower, the Jeremiah O'Brien, Signature Yachts, Red and White Fleet as well as the sport fishing boat tours were all extremely busy during that weekend which, based on the Port's share of a percentage of their revenue, meant a fair amount of increased revenue to the Port; and

WHEREAS, Pier 39, the Fisherman’s Wharf Merchants Association and the Fisherman’s Wharf Community Benefit District sent a letter to the Board of Supervisors in support of the Blue Angels performance during Fleet Week; and

WHEREAS, for many years the Blue Angels have been a major attraction for Fleet Week and Fleet Week would be incomplete without them; now, therefore, be it Resolution No. 07-53 Page 2

RESOLVED, that the Port Commission hereby supports the Blue Angels air show performance during the annual Fleet Week celebration in San Francisco; and be it further

RESOLVED, that the Port Commission directs staff to send a letter to the Board of Supervisors in support of the Blue Angels performance during Fleet Week.
