The series itself follows and enriches the tradition of the conferences Foreign Languages and Cultures at School (2002-2013). The international dimension of the conference is every year ensured by personal or virtual engagement of participants from various schools and institutions from all continents. The conference LLCE2019, held on 5 – 7 December 2019 in Rome, Italy, was organised as part of two projects funded by the Ministry of Education, Science, Research and Sport of the Slovak Republic: • KEGA 001TTU-4/2019: University education of non-native teachers of foreign languages in national and international contexts • VEGA 1/0799/18: National Literatures in the Age of Globalisation (Origin and Development of American-Slovak Literary and Cultural Identity). The LLCE2019 Proceedings consists of nine research studies which cover basic areas of contemporary philology: language education, applied linguistics, and literary studies. In his study “Understanding the concept of effective English as a foreign language teaching”, the Slovak lecturer Rastislav Metruk discusses possible benefits of a learner- centred approach to teaching foreign languages (employing pair-work and group-work activities, respecting learners’ needs and feelings, generating learners´ interests, creating foreign-language-friendly environment in the classroom). The Polish academic Karolina Ditrych contributed with her paper “Teaching receptive skills and the elements of culture through online sources to primary school learners of English” in which she concentrates on the importance of developing foreign language receptive skills of primary learners and the invaluable role of culture in this process. The area of literary education is discussed by the Croatian academics Jakov Sabljić & Lorena Đurčević in their paper “Teaching systems in the teaching of literature“. They introduce the overview of fundamental literature-teaching systems with their basic characteristics, followed by analysis of practical observations in school classrooms. The Glasgow University graduate Louise Kocianová introduces an active approach which dominates when teaching of Shakespeare in UK schools. In her paper “Active 7 ISBN 978-80-89864-15-7 Shakespeare in the EFL classroom“, she presents her latest findings as a result of pedagogical practice with Slovak secondary school students who studied and performed scenes from the Shakespeare play The Taming of the Shrew. Applied lingusitics is represented by two papers from two Polish academics: Anna Stachurska and Rafał Gołąbek. The paper “On usage specifications in dictionaries for learners of English: Cambridge Idioms Dictionary and Oxford Idioms Dictionary in focus” by Anna Stachurska studies English idioms and focuses on the question of how usage of English idioms is marked within two most representative idioms dictionaries, namely Oxford Idioms Dictionary and Cambridge Idioms Dictionary. Rafał Gołąbek´s paper titled “Kashubian as an ausbau language: a sociolinguistic perspective” addresses the status of Kashubian, a lect spoken in northern Poland and concludes that it seems plausible to postulate that Kashubian has attained the status of an ausbau language. The literary session of the LLCE2020 conference generated several interesting interpretative papers. The Slovak literary scholar Jana Waldnerova presented the paper ”Naïve narrator – an effective means in humour creating” in which she focused on literary humour and a specific method of its creating, which is by incorporation of the naïve narrator. The mechanism of irony was explained in the paper, as well. In their study ”Andrić’s (Magic) Realism in the Novel The Bridge on the Drina”, the Croatian colleagues from Josip Juraj Strossmayer University

Kucharz Introduction Kashubians known also as Kassubians (in Kashubian language: Kaszëbi) are the Slavonic ethnic group inhabiting the East- ern Pomerania in Poland. They speak the Kashubian language that is classified as the West Slavonic language belonging to the Lekhitic group of languages. Kashubians are the direct descendants of Pomeranians [1]. The Pomeranians came into the north- ern part of Poland about the 5th century AC. The region they lived is now known as Pomerania. The oldest mention of the region’s name is a seal of prince Barnin the First of Pomerania from the 13th century. The primary region inhabited by Pomera- nians was located close to the Parsenta River that was the border separating them Dr Alexander Majkowski. from the region inhabited by Veletians. Photograph from the last years Most of the Pomeranians lost their ethnic of life identity when Pomerania became a part of Germany and the inhabitants were subjected to extensive Germanization. Those who were living in the Eastern Po- merania survived denationalization efforts of the German state. Now in the East- ern Pomerania in Poland, over 300.000 people consider themselves as Kashubians. Some estimation indicates for higher number of Kashubians, i. e. 500.000.     Ars Educandi 12/2015 ISSN 2083-0947 / ISSN (ONLINE) 2657-6058 DOI: 10.26881/ae.2015.12.01 Artur Jabłoński Pomeranian Academy in Słupsk Functions of Kashubian literature, its educational potential and the use of electronic media for its promotion Contemporary researchers define Kashubian literature through the criterion of its language (Kalinowski 2014a). The Kashubs’ first attempts at the creation of their liter- ature date to the second half of the 16th century.1 The alphabet, spelling, and linguis- tic grammar rules for the Kashubian language were developed by Florian Stanisław Ceynowa in the 1840s. For 170 years, Kashubian literature has been a tool used con- sciously and purposefully in the process of communication (Treder 2002: 102). The ba- sic function of literature written in the Kashubian language since its very beginnings until today seems to be the preservation of the identity of the Kashubs, who – owing to their bond, originating from their cultural heritage – are a separate ethic commu- nity (Drzeżdżon 2007). The ancient heritage preserved in the very language, customs, beliefs, and symbols, has been reflected in the works of native Kashubian writers. The identity and myth-creating function Kashubian literature, like other literary traditions, is to evoke joy, sadness, fear, de- sire etc. It is to entertain and educate, but above all, it is to help understand the world. It is to a significant degree identity-focused literature, referring to the self-awareness of its recipients. The Kashubian poetry, prose and drama have been introducing their readers to the world of values passed down from generation to generation since times immemorial.

  • 1 Kashubian National Movement Emerged in the Mid-Nineteenth
    KASHUBIAN NATIONAL MOVEMENT. AN ATTEMPT AT THE HISTORY OVERVIEW Kashubian national movement emerged in the mid-nineteenth century out of the need to protest against the political consolidation and cultural assimilation enforced by the Prussian state, within the boarders of which were the Kashubians. Its purpose was the protection and development of their own identity, of which the language was the foundation, and struggle for the legal status on the German-Polish border. The development of Kashubian statehood was interrupted early, which stopped the natural formation of the Kashubian (Pomeranian) nation. Although the West State ruled by the royal Griffin dynasty survived from the Middle Ages to the seventeenth century, its population had been Germanized a lot sooner. In the Middle Ages Gdańsk Pomerania enjoyed independence for a little more than a century. After that it fell into the hands of the Teutonic Knights for almost 150 years. Further 300 years it was under the rule of Royal Prussia administered by Polish Kingdom, and finally, during the first partition of Poland it became a part of the Prussian State. Nevertheless, traditionally it is the whole of Pomerania from the Baltic Sea to the Notec river – defines Józef Borzyszkowski1 – by the lower Oder and Vistula, this is the original Kashubia, the spiritual homeland of contemporary Kashubians. It is this tradition that the representatives of native intelligence called for in the mid-nineteenth century, through which the remnant Slavs of the southern Baltic Sea coast – as it was already said about Kashubians – over the next several decades were awoken from their lethargy and started their own path to national revival.

    The Most Recent Kashubian Literature: The Situation Today, Achievements and Tasks for the Foreseeable Future Grzegorz Schramke Introduction: The Kashubians and a Short History of Their Literature About the Kashubians The Kashubians are a small West Slavic ethnic group who now populate the northern-central part of Poland, bordered by the Baltic Sea on the north and the town of Chojnice on the south and the cities of Słupsk on the west and Gdańsk on the east. Historically, the land of the Kashubians (previously called the Pomeranians) was several times larg- er, spanning the territory from the Baltic Sea to the Noteć river and be- tween the Wisła and Odra rivers.     Melancholia and Katabasis in Majkowski’s Life and Adventures of Remus Joseph J. Hughes (Missouri State University) Abstract. A complex system of light and dark imagery pervades the Kashubian activist Dr. Aleksander Majkowski‟s 1938 novel „Life and Adventures of Remus‟. The light, of course, stands for the Kashubian culture and the dark for the German overlords. Underscoring this system of imagery are the themes of katabasis, or descent to a real or symbolic Land of the Dead, and melancholia, a turn of the century term for clinical depression derived from the Greek melaina khole, or “dark bile.” These two themes, so important to the novel‟s literary goals, are somewhat compromised in the otherwise excellent 2008 English translation, due to the vagaries of the English language: what would be evident to a Kashubian or even Polish reader is cloaked to an English-language reader. INTRODUCTION The novel Life and Adventures of Remus was published shortly after the death of its author, Kashubian activist Dr. Aleksander Majkowski (1876-1938), who had worked on it for most of his adult life. Majkowski intended his work as an allegory of the rustic and supposedly backward Kashubian people’s struggle to preserve its language and culture in the face of German domination, hence the novel’s subtitle: the Kashubian Mirror. He received a Classical education at the progymnasium in Kościerzyna and the gymnasium in Chojnice, both in the Kashubian region of Poland, before leaving for the University of Berlin and, eventually, his medical studies at the University of Munich.

  • Feminist Transgressions in Polish Culture and Society
    Contributors Grażyna Borkowska is a professor at the Institute of Literary Research at the Polish Academy of Sciences, and a corresponding member of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Warsaw, Poland. She is editor-in-chief of the quarterly Pamiętnik Literacki and the president of the Adam Mickiewicz Literary Association. In addition, she teaches guest courses at the University of Warsaw and Jagiellonian University. She specializes in nineteenth and twenty-fi rst century literature, especially women’s writing– Narcyza Żmichowska, Eliza Orzeszkowa, Zofi a Nałkowska, Maria Dąbrowska and nineteenth-century literary criticism. She is the author of numerous books, including Dialog powieściowy i jego konteksty, Wrocław, 1988; Nierozważna i nieromantyczna: o Halinie Poświatowskiej, Kraków, 2001; Alienated Women: A Study on Polish Women’s Fiction (1845–1918), transl. by Ursula Phillips, Budapest, New York, 2001, and others. Józef Figa is an adjunct faculty member at Southern New Hampshire University, where he teaches courses in Global Society, but he is currently enjoying semi-re- tirement. He grew up in Katowice, Poland and received his BA in Sociology from Brooklyn College and MA and PhD in Sociology from the University of New Hampshire. He was a graduate exchange student at the University of Southern Wales and Monmouthshire in Cardiff, UK and a Fulbright Fellow in Yugoslavia and IREX fellow in Slovenia. He taught sociology at the University of New Hampshire, Indiana-Purdue University, the University of Southern Mississippi, Mount Mercy College and Kaplan University. His initial research focused on sociological theory and societal roots of political legitimacy, but his specifi c area of interest is related to legitimacy problems in Communist socie- ties.
