    P a g e | 1 Language Contact in Pomerania: The Case of German, Polish, and Kashubian Nick Znajkowski, New York University Purpose The effects of language contact and language shift are well documented. Lexical items and phonological features are very easily transferred from one language to another and once transferred, rather easily documented. Syntactic features can be less so in both respects, but shifts obviously do occur. The various qualities of these shifts, such as whether they are calques, extensions of a structure present in the modifying language, or the collapsing of some structure in favor the apparent simplicity found in analogous foreign structures, all are indicative of the intensity and the duration of the contact. Additionally, and perhaps this is the most interesting aspect of language shift, they show what is possible in the evolution of language over time, but also what individual speakers in a single generation are capable of concocting. This paper seeks to explore an extremely fascinating and long-standing language contact situation that persists to this day in Northern Poland—that of the Kashubian language with its dominating neighbors: Polish and German. The Kashubians are a Slavic minority group who have historically occupied the area in Northern Poland known today as Pomerania, bordering the Baltic Sea. Their language, Kashubian, is a member of the Slavic branch of Indo-European languages and further belongs to the Pomeranian branch of Lechitic languages, which includes Polish, Silesian, and the extinct Polabian and Slovincian. The situation to be found among the Kashubian people, a people at one point variably bi-, or as is sometimes the case among older folk, even trilingual in Kashubian, P a g e | 2 Polish, and German is a particularly exciting one because of the current vitality of the Kashubian minority culture.

Because of exceptional features of animate and inanimate nature, large parts of the province are covered by various forms of nature protection. There is 1 national park (NP), 72 nature reserves (NRs), 9 landscape parks, 21 protected landscape areas and 40 Natura 2000 sites within the administrative borders of the province. The most unique natural features are found in the Świętokrzyski National Park (ŚNP), but the largest surface of the province is covered by protected landscape areas. Świętokrzyskie Voivodeship is the first in Poland in terms of the share of protected areas (as much as 65.2%), strongly outdistancing other Voivodeships. Small natural objects are much more numerous than large protected areas. At present, the Świętokrzyskie Voivodeship has 705 natural monuments (NMs), 114 ecological sites (ESs), 20 documentation sites (DSs) and 17 nature and landscape complexes (NLCs).     Obowiązek sporządzenia raportu o stanie gminy wynika z art. 28aa ustawy o samorządzie gminnym. Raport obejmuje podsumowanie działalności Wójta Gminy Dziemiany w roku 2018. Ogólna charakterystyka gminy Dziemiany Gmina Dziemiany położona jest w powiecie kościerskim, w południowej części województwa pomorskiego. Sąsiaduje z gminami Lipusz, Kościerzyna, Karsin (powiat kościerski), Studzienice (powiat bytowski) oraz z miastem Brusy (powiat chojnicki). Gmina ma charakter rolniczo-turystyczny. Prawie połowa gminy znajduje się na terenie Wdzydzkiego Parku Krajobrazowego. Przez gminę przebiega droga wojewódzka nr 235 łącząca Korne z Chojnicami, droga powiatowa łącząca Dziemiany z Bytowem oraz linia kolejowa Kościerzyna - Chojnice. Gminę zamieszkuję 4407 osób (stan na 31.12.2018 r.). Największym sołectwami są Dziemiany liczące 1971 mieszkańców (44,72% ludności gminy) oraz Kalisz – 994 (22,56% ludności gminy) mieszkańców. Zdecydowana większość mieszkańców gminy posiada kaszubskie korzenie. Kultura kaszubska podtrzymywana jest przez miejscowy Oddział Zrzeszenia Kaszubsko - Pomorskiego w Dziemianach, Koło Gospodyń Wiejskich w Dziemianach oraz uczniów, którzy uczą się języka kaszubskiego w szkołach. Na terenie całej gminy ustawione są dwujęzyczne polsko-kaszubskie tablice wjazdowe i kierunkowe. Powierzchnia całkowita gminy obejmuje obszar 125 km2. Gęstość zaludnienia gminy wynosi 35,26 os./km² Teren gminy podzielony jest na 8 sołectw: Dziemiany, Jastrzębie Dziemiańskie, Kalisz, Piechowice, Płęsy, Schodno, Raduń i Trzebuń.
