Figuring translations as gifts positions both source and target cultures as givers and recipients and supplements over-used translation metaphors of betrayal, plundering, submission, or fidelity. As Marcel Mauss articulates, the gift itself desires to be returned and reciprocated. My project maps out the Hemispheric Americas as an independent translation zone and highlights non-European translation norms. Portuguese and Spanish have been sidelined even from European translation studies: only in Mexico and Brazil do we see autochthonous translation theories in Spanish and Portuguese. Focusing on translation strategies that value ii taboo-breaking, I identify poet-translators in Mexico and Brazil who develop their own translation manuals.

The symbol of the cross existed in both European and American societies hundreds of years before Columbus. In both cultures, the cross was integral in religious ceremony, priestly decoration, and cosmic maps. As a symbol of life and death, of human and divine suffering, of religious and political acquiescence, no other image in transatlantic history has held such a perennial, powerful message as the cross. For colonial Mexico, which felt the brunt of Spanish initiative, the symbol of the cross penetrated the autochthonous culture out of which the independent nation and indigenous church were born.

    “En el pancracio ardiente”: lucha y poesía, la ilusión de los hechos Alejandro Palma Castro Benemérita Universidad Autónoma de Puebla Resumen: En este artículo estudio la relación entre poesía y el pancracio (antecedente de la lucha libre) remontándome a los inicios de la lírica coral griega de Píndaro (s. V a. C.) y sus odas a los vencedores en los juegos olímpicos. Destaco cuatro artificios fundamentales para comprender dichos poemas que a la postre constituyeron los rasgos discursivos de la lírica contemporánea. Esto me permite establecer la relación actual entre la poesía mexicana contemporánea y la lucha libre, dos prácticas culturales que dependen de la misma poética para lograr una ilusión de los hechos en el “pancracio ardiente”. LUCHA LIBRE MEXICANA. MASCARAS A TRAVES DEL TIEMPO Por Julio Crespo La principal seña de identidad de la lucha libre en México es la máscara. Estos diseños que portan los luchadores son parte esencial en la creación de sus personajes, les confieren un sentido único, una intencionalidad, rodeando al luchador de un halo de misterio. Las máscaras son el bien más preciado que puede tener un luchador, y no hay mayor deshonra que perderla en una lucha de apuestas. LA HERENCIA DE LA MASCARA Con el paso de los años, las generaciones luchísticas mexicanas están defendiendo sus máscaras e incluso heredándolas, pasando éstas de padres a hijos (conocidas son las dinastías de los Villanos, los hermanos Dinamita, Santo el Enmascarado de Plata, Blue Demon, Tinieblas, Dos Caras). Las máscaras representan a un personaje y son defendidas por las nuevas generaciones incluso cuando los originales perdieron su incógnita, sus hijos o herederos retoman el personaje de nuevo enmascarado (como en los casos de Rey Misterio JR, Fishman JR, Dr Wagner JR, Rayo de Jalisco JR). También hay personajes que mantuvieron la incógnita durante toda su carrera y que sus juniors han perdido la máscara en lucha de apuestas, el ejemplo más reciente y más popular es Lizmark JR, quien perdió la máscara heredada de su padre en la función del 74º Aniversario de la lucha en México, organiza por el CMLL en 2007.

    THE DEVOTION TO A LIVING SANTO AND HIS RELIGIOUS HEALING: AN INTERDISCPLINARY STUDY OF EL NIÑO FIDENCIO AND HIS RELIGIOUS MOVEMENT By José Maria Villarreal A DISSERTATION Submitted to Michigan State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Chicano/Latino Studies - Doctor of Philosophy 2015 ABSTRACT THE DEVOTION TO A LIVING SANTO AND HIS RELIGIOUS HEALING: AN INTERDISCPLINARY STUDY OF EL NIÑO FIDENCIO AND HIS RELIGIOUS MOVEMENT By José Maria Villarreal This dissertation outlines a fresh approach to the inter-disciplinary study of El Niño Fidencio (the healer) and El Niño Fidencio religious movement as seen under the conceptual lens of an indigenized Christianity that distinguishes itself from mainstream Christianity. Apart from consulting an extended body of literature related to world religions, religious theory, curanderismo , popular religion and their analytical relationship to El Niño Fidencio, I also employed the inside research methodology to conduct my ethnographic work. My extensive fieldwork experience metamorphosed into a theoretical model centered on cultural rupture, and indigenous practices as symbolic resistance. The inside research methods allowed me to live among the devotees of El Niño Fidencio and participate in their rituals and ceremonies. Taking this into account, I posit the following theoretical framework: El Niño Fidencio and El Niño Fidencio’s religious movement represent a cultural rupture from mainstream Catholicism and Western forms of Christianity as evidenced by Fidencista’s belief in the spirit world and the belief that El Niño Fidencio is a living saint and at times seen as synonymous with Jesus Christ by hardline Fidencistas. Ryan Satin of Pro Wrestling Sheet reported on 25/3 that Brie Bella would be retiring “following the RAW after WrestleMania” and noted that Bryan had been pulled from his appearances to do a “health issue.” Satin's report claimed that it is unclear what the issue with Bryan is, but according to his “sources” the “health issue” is the reason why Brie was not at TV this week and a major reason why she is moving her retirement up from the summer to after Mania.
