Figuring translations as gifts positions both source and target cultures as givers and recipients and supplements over-used translation metaphors of betrayal, plundering, submission, or fidelity. As Marcel Mauss articulates, the gift itself desires to be returned and reciprocated. My project maps out the Hemispheric Americas as an independent translation zone and highlights non-European translation norms. Portuguese and Spanish have been sidelined even from European translation studies: only in Mexico and Brazil do we see autochthonous translation theories in Spanish and Portuguese. Focusing on translation strategies that value ii taboo-breaking, I identify poet-translators in Mexico and Brazil who develop their own translation manuals. -

The University of Texas at Arlington, 2008 Supervising Professor: Douglas Richmond The universality of the cross image within the transatlantic confrontation meant not only a hegemony of culture, but of symbolism. The symbol of the cross existed in both European and American societies hundreds of years before Columbus. In both cultures, the cross was integral in religious ceremony, priestly decoration, and cosmic maps. As a symbol of life and death, of human and divine suffering, of religious and political acquiescence, no other image in transatlantic history has held such a perennial, powerful message as the cross. For colonial Mexico, which felt the brunt of Spanish initiative, the symbol of the cross penetrated the autochthonous culture out of which the independent nation and indigenous church were born. -

Boletín 022/2018 REPRUEBA NUEVA ALIANZA EL AVAL DE LOS SENADORES A LA OBJECIÓN DE CONCIENCIA EN LA LEY DE SALUD Boletín Núm. 022/2018 Corresponde a Nueva Alianza, como un partido liberal, manifestar su postura en contra de una reforma que es absolutamente subjetiva y personal El partido reconoce y se congratula por el voto en contra de esta adhesión a la Ley General de Salud, por parte de los senadores que así se inconformaron Ciudad de México, 24 de marzo de 2018.- Admitir el derecho de objeción de conciencia en la Ley General de Salud significa supeditar un derecho humano fundamentalmente objetivo, como es el de la salud, a una percepción subjetiva y particular de un prestador de servicios, lo cual pondrá en riesgo la atención médica de millones de personas. Nueva Alianza se manifiesta en contra de esta modificación que adiciona un artículo 10 Bis a dicho ordenamiento legal, votado a favor en días pasados por la Cámara de Senadores, y destaca que los diputados integrantes de la fracción parlamentaria de Nueva Alianza dieron su voto reprobatorio durante la discusión respectiva en el recinto de San Lázaro el año pasado. Correspondió a la legisladora turquesa Karina Sánchez Ruiz defender la postura de Nueva Alianza, quien afirmó que permitir que los profesionales de la salud puedan hacer valer la objeción de conciencia y excusarse de participar o cooperar en todos aquellos programas, actividades, prácticas, tratamientos, métodos o investigaciones que contravengan su libertad de conciencia, con base en sus valores o principios religiosos, repercutirá negativamente en la salud de las y los mexicanos. -

Dear Secretary Salazar: I strongly oppose the Bush administration's illegal and illogical regulations under Section 4(d) and Section 7 of the Endangered Species Act, which reduce protections to polar bears and create an exemption for greenhouse gas emissions. I request that you revoke these regulations immediately, within the 60-day window provided by Congress for their removal. The Endangered Species Act has a proven track record of success at reducing all threats to species, and it makes absolutely no sense, scientifically or legally, to exempt greenhouse gas emissions -- the number-one threat to the polar bear -- from this successful system. I urge you to take this critically important step in restoring scientific integrity at the Department of Interior by rescinding both of Bush's illegal regulations reducing protections to polar bears.
