BID APRIL RARE SOUL AUCTION & A SECOND YOU DONE LET DAYLIGHT STANSON 541 M- 836 RE$SURRECTION CATCH YOU Only the second copy we’ve had of this fabulous seventies dancer and one which is even more rarely found in great condition. The few copies we’ve seen were virtually all badly worn or warped. A top quality combo, they backed many major soul acts of the late seventies, surprising therefore that this was their only release. B ELBIE PARKER PLEASE KEEP AWAY FROM VEEP 1246 VG++ 420 ME The unknown Mr Parker on a top quality 1966 N.Y. production from Bob Crewe and Herbie Bernstein. And of course, that pair knew how to make records. A B-side (to ‘Lucky Guy’), Parker was a good vocalist despite his obscurity and the issue copy of this one has always been a rarer item than the promo. C THE IT’S BETTER TO CRY SPORT 111 WD M- 770 APPRECIATIONS Despite appearing on two Detroit labels and a national major, The Appreciations were a Carolinas outfit managed by Hattie Leeper. This one is much the rarer of their two 45s on the Sport imprint and may not actually be a Detroit recording. Whatever the case, it is superb Northern Soul and the first copy we’ve ever had on a white promo. D THE BLENDERS YOUR LOVE HAS GOT ME MAR-V-LUS VG++ 500 DOWN 6010 Along with Joseph Moore, one of the rarest records on the famed Chicago imprint with no more than 500 copies pressed up back in 1967. The group’s roots were in doo-wop and this 45 represents their last attempt at vinyl success. Although ‘Your Love’ has attracted collectors and dancers alike, the slower ‘Love Is A Good Thing Goin’ is very nice too and we’ve ‘soundbitten’ that side as well. ! ! E LUST I LIKE SPENDING MY TIME CA$H 552 M- 350 WITH YOU / I STILL LOVE YOU GIRL Time for a dip into the eighties (1984) for an unknown artist on a label owned by Alvin Cash and with other Windy City luminaries Willie Henderson and Lawrence Hanks helping out, the result is a strong Modern Soul double-sider with many folks preferring the uptempo ‘I Like Spending My Time With You’ to the smouldering downtempo ‘I Still Love You’. Both sides available on the soundbite. F KELLY & SOUL TALKING ABOUT MY BABY’S DYNAMITE 110 M- 1189 EXPLOSIONS LOVE Another double-sided rarity out of Norfolk, Virginia with the Northern Soul side listed fighting it out with the solid Deep Funk of ‘Got A Gig On My Back’ (not a problem many are having currently) on the flipside. We found a handful of these in the U.S. thirty years ago… not a sniff of one since. G THE THERE CAN BE A BETTER MAM 802 D M- 600 MAGNIFICENTS WAY Ady C is fairly adamant that this label is the same as the label started by Gordon Mills in the UK (Tom Jones’ manager). Not for me Mr C, this is Magnificent Montague’s label and an L.A. outlet for Jack Ashford’s work recorded in Detroit. This isn’t the Dee Gee group but another name for the Smith Brothers. Ashford issued the flipside as The Perfections on Drumhead. H JAISUN I KNOW WHAT LOVE IS CONBRIO 1932 M- 250 Jaisun Johnson originated from San Antonio, Texas and in the seventies worked the L.A. club scene. This release was her first in 1974 and she had a subsequent 1977 release that, although worthy, isn’t hard-to-find (also a decent album). In amongst her efforts to find stardom she was briefly a member of both The Platters and Martha and The Vandellas. I DEAN COURTNEY (LOVE) YOU JUST CAN’T MGM 13776 D M- 325 WALK AWAY Just listen to the quality on this one! How can some records fail so badly when they are so good? It’s debatable whether this one got beyond the promo stage although Courtney himself claims it got a release in the Nashville area… with records such as Towanda Barnes and J.D. Martin turning up as issue copies, one should never say ‘never’. Flipside ‘Betcha Can’t Change My Mind’ is a good’un too (see soundbite). NB – Should’ve looked at the internet, the issue does exist! Sell us one please! J WILLIE TEE I’M HAVING SO MUCH GATUR 557 M- 700 FUN Backed with ‘First Taste Of Hurt’ to make for an incredible double-sider from Mr Turbinton circa 1970. Needless to say, we’ve ‘soundbitten’ both sides for you. K ZODIACS HEY RUGH NUT C.R.S. 006 VG+ 150 We’re sure you’ve all come across records that play far better than they look. Well here is a case in point – well used with a slight amount of ring wear on the label but plays well indeed. One of those tracks that prove the adoption of ‘funky’-styled Northern Soul to be a good thing. L THE HYPERIONS WHY YOU WANNA TREAT CHATTAHOOCHE M- 600 ME LIKE YOU DO E 669 Ruth Conte’s label from L.A. ran from 1961 to 1966, its colourful design with drum-playing Red Indian (sorry – can’t get my head around Native American) will be familiar to many collectors. Although a very wide mix of music was offered by the imprint, soul fans can find a number of good records amongst it all. Prime amongst these is The Hyperions’ release (Hyperion was a figure in Greek mythology) from an unknown group which probably contained Ernie Washington, who also has a collectable on the label. ! ! M TROY JOHNSON I WANT YOU SOUL BEAT 001 M- 250 A 1978 Los Angeles release from the unknown Troy Johnson who, as far as we know, is not related to any others of the same name. First played as part of the late seventies / early eighties Modern Soul renaissance spearheaded by Messrs Searling, Barnfather and Fenn. Not often offered for sale very much in those times, or ever since, to be honest. N DONNA COLMAN YOUR LOVES TOO STRONG AVIN 102 VG++ 281 Looks like a one-off for Chicago’s Donna Colman on Andre Williams’ label, but two powerful sides indicate that she should have given us more (unless it’s a pseudonym for someone else of course). Flipside ‘If You Want Me’ is also worthwhile and we’ve ‘soundbitten’ that one too. O TAN GEERS WHAT’S THE USE OF ME TRYING OKEH 7319 WD M- 475 Memories of Todmorden’s Ukranian Club with Ginger and Eddie back in ’73 – thirty years on and ‘Let My Heart And Soul Be Free’ was the biggie. Difficult to separate the two, but quite simply they have to be owned; ideally on the original Okeh imprint. P RE-VELLS I WANT A NEW LOVE TRENT TOWN 1005 VG++ 271 Details on the exact nature of the group are sketchy but it is highly likely that this is the last throw of the dice from the Philadelphia doo-wop group the Re-Vels in 1969 on a tiny New Jersey label. On ‘I Want A New Love’ they turn into frantic uptempo soulers in a track tailormade for the Northern scene. The slow flipside has four names written on the label, if they are the group members then this is not the same Re-Vels! Tiny edge lift on 4cm of the run-in groove, doesn’t affect playback when the needle hits the song grooves. ! SECOND PAGE FOCUS 1 MAXINE BROWN THE SECRET OF LIVIN’ WAND 1145 M- 15 Yet another winner from Maxine, a great vibe-laden track. 2 SPYDER TURNER I CAN’T MAKE IT ANYMORE MGM 13692 M- 15 When the first wave of revived ‘cheapies’ hit the Casino, this was the best – and still sounds marvellous to this day. 3 JACKIE ROSS I’VE GOT THE SKILL CHESS 1913 M- 15 With its mock-oriental intro this is one of Jackie’s most distinctive releases. Red & Yellow West Coast press. 4 MAMIE GALORE TOO MANY MEMORIES ST. LAWRENCE 1008 M- 10 Mamie Davis was renamed after Pussy Galore in the James Bond films. This, her 2nd release, has a great Motownesque quality about it. 5 ALVIN SWEET, SWEET REVENGE BRUNSWICK M- 20 VALENTINE 755409 Seems like a one-off for this singer and almost certainly a N.Y. recording. None of which should take away from a red-hot Northern winner. 6 LYN ROMAN STOP, I DON’T NEED NO BRUNSWICK 55508 M- 10 SYMPATHY Powerhouse seventies dancer was Lyn’s only one for the label. Linda Griner of course. 7 JIMMY RUFFIN BOY FROM MISSISSIPPI CHESS 2168 WD M- 15 Nice promo (with both sides) of this great southern-styled seventies dancer. 8 LEE WILLIAMS AND THE SHING-A-LING U.S.A. CARNIVAL 538 M- 25 CYMBALS Far better soul record than the ephemeral title would suggest.
