No drop-downs, proxies, extensions, etc. It’s a simple ‘price-you-offer’ system. A good selection once more of classics, lesser-knowns and almost unknowns. Hope there is something of interest for you and we thank you for your attention. Good luck! MIN. BID JULY RARE SOUL AUCTION A THE EL COROLS CHICK CHICK ROUSER 2954 M- 650 The El Corols were a group of high school students whose recording came out on two labels, both of which are scarce. Recent times have seen quite a bit of attention fall on this excellent dancer and this is a super copy, almost perfect save for one small 8mm mark on the flipside. B TOBI LARK CHALLENGE MY LOVE TOPPER 1015 M- 700 Backed with ‘Sweep It Out In The Shed’ to make for a superb Detroit double-sider. Tobi turned out to be Tobi Legend of course and we had suspicions that might be the case many years ago but never guessed that she was also Bessie Watson on Jay-Pee Records. C THE TEMPOS I GOTTA MAKE A MOVE MONTEL VG++ 200 MICHELLE 955 Various soul groups used the Tempos name, but this accomplished outfit on a Baton Rouge, Louisiana label is related to no others. Great group harmonies on a 1965 mover that really gets under the skin. Very strong VG++, just a couple of light marks. D THE BLUE JAYS (IT DEPENDS ON THE) POINT JAY 4815 VG+ 460 OF VIEW A one-off 1965 recording out of Wilmington, Delaware by an unknown group and despite the label’s number there would appear to be no other releases on the imprint. Our first copy in quite a few years and certainly not mint but plays very acceptably – check the soundbite. E THE VILLAGE ALONG THE BEACH N.Y.C. STREET M- 450 CHOIR SOUND 1000 One of three mixes of this track to make it to 45 – and all of them rare, two of the releases have the excellent ‘Sweet Hot Lips’ on the flipside which is an equally strong modern/crossover sound. This group, in a similar style to the Voices Of East Harlem, really had talent in their ranks but only ever had one small hit (‘The Cat Walk’). Two great sides here. F THE CAN’T STOP LOVING YOU ACT IV 4-13 VG++ 600 CONQUISTADORS This copy has been on our auction before but came back when we bought John Vincent’s collection. Although the vinyl isn’t bad at all on both sides, 90% of the label details are obscured by water damage – a couple of scans of the labels would put that to rights easily enough. A Chicago group fronted by Jimmy Hudson who never made it beyond a couple of releases – very unfairly as their sides reveal. Speaking of which, take a listen to the brilliant flipside ‘You’ve Been Good’ on our soundbite. G LIL’ LENNIX SOUL WOMEN OF TODAY CLIQUE 1004 VG++ 500 SEARCHERS Incredibly obscure group and label out of Las Vegas and from the days when the Nevada city was not the sprawling metropolis it is today either. Good Vietnam ballad on the flipside dates the record as late sixties most likely. Producer Cholly Williams was also the man behind a disc by the Four Tots!... who turned out to be a distinctly junior soul group of great obscurity. H THE STEINWAYS YOU’VE BEEN LEADING ME ON OLIVER 2002 VG++ 200 One of the great double-siders of Northern Soul, firstly it was ‘My Heart’s Not In It Anymore’ then, in more recent times ‘Leading’ became the side. Fronted by the great Frankie Gearing, The Steinways made just two 45s for Oliver Records before Gearing moved on to The Glories on Date. Amazingly, The Steinways toured the UK in ’66 as ‘The Fabulous Platters’. I BONNIE BLANCHARD YOU’RE THE ONLY ONE C.R.S. 000002 M- 350 & ANDY AARON No sign of Mr Andy Aaron on the vocals of this top-rate Philadelphia mover from 1969 on Curtis Staten’s label – its no loss as Bonnie Blanchard takes all the honours on a tremendous vocal performance. It would seem that she was only ever on this label (as a solo artist at any rate). Aaron in actual fact would appear to be the bandleader of the Mean Machine who make the music on both sides of this 45. J MOSES SMITH KEEP ON STRIVING COTILLION M- 275 44075 WD Another tremendous ‘little league’ Philadelphian singer (see above) who, despite his fame with ‘Girl Across The Street’ is basically lost to the sands of time. Basically, we know he won a talent contest at the age of 13 and came under the wings of Gilda Woods (the wife of famed Philly radio D.J. George Woods). Indeed, she produced this excellent double-sider. Back in the day ‘Come On, Let Me Love You’ was the Northern side but ‘Striving’ slowly emerged as a crossover winner. This copy is in very nice condition but one Andrew Sands of Patton Drive, Philadelphia has placed his sticker on the ‘Come On’ side. K MAJOR LANCE YOU DON’T WANT ME NO OKEH 7284 VG++ 300 MORE As the Major’s worst-selling Okeh release, it is quite possible that the issue copy is rarer than the promo. For sure its his prime Northern effort and one, in the seventies, that he seemed to steer clear of in his UK ‘live’ performances for some reason. Don’t ignore the excellent flipside ‘Wait Till I Get You In My Arms’ either (also done by Kenny Carlton on Blue Rock). L KING EARNEST YOU GONNA MISS ME SONIC 1002 M- 420 Absolute stormer from a soul artist with more alter-egos than a double agent! He was Earnest Baker, King Earnest Baker, Ernie King and Ernest King as well as the above moniker. Died in a car crash in 2000 apparently but made a good number of very decent soul records in the sixties and seventies – this is certainly one of them. Don’t ignore the flipside of ‘The Soul Stroke (Can You Handle It)’ which careers along in a similar vein. Both on soundbite. M THE PEOPLE’S SAVIN’ MY LOVIN’ FOR YOU PALMER 5020 VG++ 600 CHOICE It was Ginger who first started playing this in ’78 when he got Simon Soussan’s copy and its bubbled along as a rarity ever since; never easy to find and written by the legendary Wylie/Hester combo. Popcorn Wylie reckoned that his demo acetate of the song existed somewhere, so who knows? Condition of this one is at the top end of VG++ without a doubt, just a few light marks. N THE FANTASTIC CAN’T STOP LOOKING FOR MY RIC-TIC 121 VG 150 FOUR BABY There is little doubt that this copy of one of Detroit’s greatest is seriously worn and plays with a few crackles. It still doesn’t erase the magic, however. Check the soundbite. O NANCY BUTTS I WANT TO HOLD YOUR HAND FLAMING M- 250 BABY (I GET LONELY) ARROW 19 Superb piece of uptempo femme soul avoided the UK for many years until a handful turned up in the early nineties. Also issued as a promo but with a slightly inferior mix – the issue (here) is the one to have without a doubt. P SHAWN MY DEAR HEART MINIT 32013 VG++ 250 ROBINSON Rarer black issue vinyl copy of this atmospheric Northern Soul track offered up by the mysterious Ms Robinson. Two theories abound about her – one that she was a white model, the other that she was a black model! We prefer the latter, not only because this is a fine soul record but also that producers Robert Staunton and Arthur Wright were firmly entrenched in black music culture and would be unlikely to turn to a Judy Street-style of singer (mind you, H.B. Barnum was behind that one). Strong VG++ condition. But in Paul Howes CDS it is said that Dusty's version was recorded before Barbra Acklin's, but released after that one. And no indication that Dusty penned the lyrics. I'm a little confused, and wonder is there any referance to confirm the song's origin of lyrics to Dusty ? Re: Soulful Strut / Am I The Same Girl by Brian Posted: Mon Nov 12, 2012 8:42 am The song was written by Eugene Record (producer of many hits for The Chi-lites) along with Sonny Sanders. It was first recorded by Barbara Acklin (who was Eugene's wife) in September 1968 but not issued immediately. The producer George Davis took the track, removed Barbara's voice and replaced it with a piano solo by Floyd Morris. It was issued in the USA in November 68 going on to reach the US top 3 pop. It was a number onerecord in Canada. It was credited to Young Holt Unlimited (which in fact were the session musicians). Barbara's version was then issued in February 1969, but only reached number 79 in the US pop chart (it did better in the R&B charts).

DESCRIPTORS *Audiodisks; Discographies; *Library Collection Development; *Library Collections; *Optical Disks; *Popular Music; *Public Libraries; Research Libraries; Tables (Data) IDENTIFIERS *Cleveland Public Library OH ABSTRACT In the 1970s and early 1980s, a few library researchers and scholars made a case for the importance of public libraries' acquisition of popular music, particularly rock music sound recordings. Their arguments were based on the anticipated historical and cultural importance of obtaining and maintaining a collection of these materials. Little new research in this direction has been performed since then. The question arose as to what, if anything, has changed since this time. This question was answered by examining the compact disc holdings of the Cleveland Public Library, a major research-oriented facility. This examination was accomplished using three discographies of essential rock music titles, as well as recent "Billboard" Top 200 Album charts. The results indicated a strong orientation toward the acquisition of recent releases, with the "Billboard" charts showing the largest percentages of holdings for the system. Meanwhile, the holdings vis-a-vis the essential discographies ran directly opposite the "Billboard" holdings. This implies a program of short-term patron satisfaction by providing current "hits," while disregarding the long-term benefits of a collection based on demonstrated artistic relevance.
