MIN BID AUCTION A THE VEL-VETS I GOT TO FIND ME 2TH CENTURY 6676 VG++ 300 SOMEBODY WD The essence of Northern Soul and a timely reminder of the way it was back in ’73.... 100% sound of excitement. B LITTLE J. HAMILTON DO THE POPCORN SOUL SHACK M- 200 And just to contrast with the way things are today after item A. Here is a rare funk item with the necessary ingredients to pack a dance floor today. We wouldn’t like to pick between ‘em! C HERBERT HUNTER I WAS BORN TO LOVE YOU SPAR 909 WD M- 250 White promo copy! Its the one to have. One of the last sixties discs played at the Mecca before going on to superstardom at the Casino. Proves Nashville could turn out top rate soul after it had finished with Tammy Whine-ette! D IKE & TINA TURNER STRANGE SONJA 5002 M- 500 This great singer has a whole bevy of great Northern tunes but none rarer than this one. Released a few years later in re-mixed form on a Capitol album, this the original stripped-down mean and moody cut. Our first copy in 25 years or more. E DAISY BURRIS FOUR STRONG WINDS DEESU 303 M- 250 Coming from the same hard-hitting direction as the previous disc but recorded in New Orleans. Always been scarce, take a listen to the soundbite. F SAXIE RUSSELL ‘PSYCHEDELIC SOUL’ THOMAS 1639 M- 200 WD Nice white promo of this crazy Chicago stomper. Funnily enough every copy of this disc that we’ve seen is on styrene manufactured at Monarch pressing plant in Los Angeles. Surely this didn’t come out only on the West Coast? Or did they ship them all back to the Windy City? Same scenario with the Fantasions ‘G.I.Joe’ on the same label too. G YVONNE VAUGHN WHEN YOU GONNA TELL DOT 16751 M- 200 HER ABOUT ME Amazing that this one has never gone massive because it has all the right ingredients. Got a bit of a buzz about a dozen years ago and then sank without sight. Doesn’t turn up too often at all. H COLD BLOODED A BETTER WAY T&L 101 VG++ 200 EXPRESS Very obscure 1978 release blends soul, funk and, yes, even a little bit of disco, to great effect. Nice ballad flip ‘You’re The Life Of Me’. I THE CHARMAINES THE ONE FOR ME RED LEAF 1 D M- 200 Great girl group doublesider available on Canadian label only (as the label design would infer). Very rarely crops up for sale and unknown to most, as a result we have but both sides up for your aural delectation. J CHRISTINE COOPER HEARTACHES AWAY MY PARKWAY VG+ 200 BOY A few marks but to be honest they hardly sound at all, hence making for something of a bargain for someone perhaps. NEW MANIFESTO MAGAZINE!!! Well not-so-new actually – this is the June edition (the last one) featuring the Hamilton Brothers of Detroit, Soul Sam’s latest acquisitions, Tim Brown on his favourite beat ballads, Richard Searling, DJ Honky and plenty more. £5 (incs UK p&p). SECOND PAGE FOCUS 1 JAY JAY TAYLOR I’M NOT TIRED YET JEWEL 848 M- 10 Fabulous Tyrone Davis-ish midpacer. 2 ADAM WADE KEEPING UP WITH THE KIRSHNER 4272 M- 25 JONESES Quite superb seventies, also done by Billy Proctor on rare Epic 7”. We once put this on auction due to the lack of copies we had encountered (but withdrew it) nonetheless this has to be a TOTAL bargain. 3 BARBARA LYNN TAKE YOUR LOVE & RUN ATLANTIC 2812 M- 15 An all-time gem, don’t need to add anymore. 4 TODAY’S PEOPLE S.O.S (ALL WE NEED IS TIME GAMMA 5050 M- 10 FOR LOVE) MASSIVE everywhere in 1976, never realised it was Canadian-only. 5 WATTS LINE NEVER STOP LOVIN’ ME BULLET 712 M- 10 West Coast seventies girls, got a few spins back in the day at the Highland Room. 6 RAY CHARLES I CHOSE TO SING THE BLUES ABC 10840 M- 15 One of the maestro’s fabulous mid-sixties dancefloor winners. 7 FRANKIE VALLI YOU’RE READY NOW SMASH 2037 M- 8 Okay, it’s our boy but, let’s be honest it’s a totally uplifting Northern classic. Get yourself a stone minter. 8 DUSTY WHAT’S IT GONNA BE PHILIPS 40498 M- 10 SPRINGFIELD Okay, it’s our girl, but let’s be honest, it’s a totally uplifting Northern classic. Get yourself a stone minter. 9 ANNETTE THOMAS HANG ON STAX 0118 WD M- 15 1974 Southern mover with a funky/gospel edge as played at the Mecca. EPs and statistics have always been desirable to the record collector, and no definitive book on every EP issued has ever been published. Vintage Records did issue the long deleted “Collectable EPs” (published in 1982) of British EPs, but this was a personal selection chosen by the long gone London record shop, but does contain what they consider over 3700 vintage obscurities. The “British Hit EPs” book I consider as a bolt-on reference book to “Collectable EPs” which focuses on the hit EPs only. The source gleaned from the Record Retailer, Music Week, Record Mirror and New Record Mirror, therefore the combination of the two books does provide a comprehensive guide for the EP researcher. “British Hit EPs” contains a brief history of the EP which is interesting reading, but the “Technical Notes” and the “How The Information is Presented” do need some digesting before ploughing into the data. The EPs are listed per artist in alpha order showing all their releases, issue dates and track listing, and every page has photos, this section finishes at page 132.
