Abstract This document reports on 2,300 responses to a nationwide survey of older adults who cycle. The survey, open from February through September 2020, includes questions about a rider’s cycling history, current cycling habits, and falls. It includes a visual preference survey of various cycling facilities and an online journaling option for two rides subsequent to completing the survey (results of the online journals will be available in the summer 2021). Responses reflect the impact of COVID-19 on older adults’ cycling habits, the impact of aging on ability and agility, the impact of the built environment, types of bicycles, and opportunities to cycle with others. Responses were analyzed by gender and age. Questions such as cycling frequency and falls were compared to a modified version of Geller’s four types of cyclists. Key take-aways include: Many older adults will need to adapt to their changing cycling abilities with a different bicycle, a different expectation about their cycling experience, and local programs to encourage sustained cycling. A fair number of respondents learned to cycle as an adult which suggests that local programs can also encourage older adults to learn to ride and how to select a bicycle. Lower cycling rates may result from not having a bikeable or proper-fitting bicycle, or the money to fix or purchase a bike. Questions posed for further consideration include: Can education and outreach help reduce near misses? Can planning and engineering help reduce near misses, especially in areas where more older adults cycle?     o RIGINAL RESEARCH_______________________________ Injuries Involving Off-road Cycling Frederick P. Rivara, MD, MPH; Diane C. Thompson, MS; Robert S. Thompson, MD; and Viviana Rebolledo Seattle, Washington BACKGROUND. Data on injuries due to off-road bicycling are scarce, but do indicate that injuries in this sport are frequent. We examined the pattern of injuries to off-road riders as part of a larger study of bicycle injuries and helmet use. METHODS. We undertook a prospective study of bicycle-related injuries identified at seven emergency depart­ ments in Seattle, Washington, between March 1992 and August 1994. Hospitalized patients and medical examin­ ers’ cases were included. Detailed questionnaires and abstraction of all medical records provided information on crash and rider characteristics and injury type and severity. RESULTS. A total of 3390 injured riders participated, representing an 88% response rate. Of all injured cyclists, 127 (3.7%) were injured riding “off road.” Seventy-three percent of off-road cyclists were 20 to 39 years of age, and 86.6% were male. Helmet use was 80.3% for off-road cyclists as compared with 49.5% for other cyclists. The number of head and face injuries for the off-road cyclists was only 40% of the number incurred by other cyclists. Four percent of off-road cyclists had severe injuries (Injury Severity Score >8), and 6.3% were hospital­ ized, compared with 6.8% and 9.4%, respectively, of other cyclists. CONCLUSIONS. The majority of off-road bicycling injuries are minor. Off-road cyclists are less likely to have head and face injuries than other cyclists and are more likely to wear helmets.

JUNE 2011 ABSTRACT Purpose: To, one, investigate the anatomical and physiological attributes of Downhill mountain bike athletes and, two, to determine the influence of these inherent physiological attributes on Downhill race performance. Methods: The study consisted of two testing components; laboratory- and field-based testing. Laboratory study: An anthropometric profile was determined from seven trained and competitive DH athletes (age 21 ± 5 years). Peak power output and time to peak power were determined by six, 6-second maximal sprints, performed on an SRM stationary ergometer. Cadence was restricted during five sprints (60, 80, 100, 120 and 140 rpm) to determine optimal cadence for achieving peak power. Field study: Twelve trained and competitive DH athletes (age 20 ± 5 years) performed two timed runs of a National Championship DH course. Heart rate was recorded and two GPS units (attached to the bicycle and helmet) recorded speed (kmhr-1), distance (m), time (seconds) and impacts (g). Results: Laboratory study: DH cyclists have predominantly mesomorphic somatotypes (mean somatotype values, 2.1,4.7,3.0) with a mean sum of 8 skinfolds, 68.7 ± 19.8 mm. Sprint testing revealed peak power output (23.36 ± 2.12 Wkg-1) was achieved at restricted cadence of 110 rpm and time to peak power output was 1.5 ± 0.9 seconds. Field study: DH race run time was 178.57 ± 12.10 seconds.
