By exposing the students to eminent scholars in the field of East Asian Studies both in India and abroad, it offers an excellent platform for the students to interact with scholars of different parts of the country and outside India as well, including the scholars of China, Japan and Japan, by which they are able to explore new areas of research and assess their capabilities of research as well. Such conferences, regular seminars and workshops have a tremendous impact on generating and deepening the interest of the students and researchers to venture beyond the conventional categories of academic pursuits, such as area studies, and make them conscious of the immense possibilities of research and career opportunities.

13. Other Relevant Information

1. We have received approval of Academic Council and Executive Council of the University of Delhi to start M.A in Chinese and Korean Language from the next academic year. 2. Six courses on East Asian Studies (History, Politics, Society, Culture, Economy and International Relations) under Discipline – II in the new Four year Under Graduate Programme have got approval of Academic Council and Executive Council of the University of Delhi. 3. Since 2009 the Department has started the student feedback mechanism at the end of each semester to enable students to express their views about the usefulness of a particular course as well as the manner in which it is being taught. In addition, the students are asked to also comment on the efficiency, expertise, punctuality, clarity and approachability of the teachers in responding to the queries of the students inside the class as well as outside the class. This method has enabled the Department to monitor the efficacy of the courses. The students’ feedback also enables teachers to change or improve their methods of teaching. In response to the feedback, the Department has, from time to time, engaged with the students on several occasions, on issues and taken their suggestions for improvement of the courses as well as availability of the study materials to facilitate their studies. 4. “Beyond syllabus scholarly activities” of the department include: *Capsule course in collaboration with the Center for Air Power Studies for the research students

*Workshops for the training of the teachers who have been engaged in teaching the papers on Chinese, Japanese and Korean history or politics, economy or society or international relations *Joint collaborative conferences with other academic institutions and think tanks *Regular Departmental Seminar *Movie shows in the audio-visual laboratory for Chinese, Japanese and Korean Language students to enhance their listening skills 5. Code of ethics for research followed by the department: 1. Language requirement is compulsory for the research scholars. It is a must for them to have proficiency in any one of the East Asian Languages so that they can use primary sources. 2. Research Methodology is a very important part of our research programmes. Term Papers/Book Reviews are given to improve their writing ability. Presentations are equally important. 3. Research students give all the assignments/dissertations/theses in soft copy. To check plagiarism, these are put into Plagiarism Checker. If percentage of copying/pasting is found to be very high, the student is disqualified from the course. 6. Contributions of the Department in generating new knowledge, basic or applied: The Department of East Asian Studies has, over the last 50 years of its existence promoted two major areas of learning in the area studies, namely, studies in the fields of culture and civilization of East Asia with particular reference to China, Japan and Korea, and language, literature and linguistic studies of East Asia, with particular reference to the Chinese, Japanese and Korean Languages and Literature. With the help of research conducted by both the students and the teachers, the Department has contributed towards a better understanding of East Asian civilization in all its various aspects, such as society, culture, religion, history, politics, economy, international relations, philosophy, art and aesthetics. The Department has also published books to promote better understanding of East Asia in an interdisciplinary perspective. The Department has also brought its own books for the purpose of teaching these languages in the Indian context keeping the Indian students’ needs in mind.

7. Major Strengths of the Department: *Multi-disciplinary approach, which emphasizes the need to study all the different branches of social sciences such as history, politics, sociology, anthropology, economics, psychology, law, international relations, etc. in order to understand holistically the culture and civilization of East Asia. *Comparative studies approach, which promotes studies of East Asian civilization and culture in comparison to other civilizations such the Indian civilization and the Western civilization, instead of studying the region in isolation. *Language as an integral part of learning and research, which means that all the students have to compulsorily learn at least one of the languages of East Asia in order to be able to effectively conduct their study and research by using primary source material as well as to understand the nuances of the culture and civilization through the terms of their own language rather than through the translations. *Multiple courses to cater to differential needs of the students, which means that the Department offers two Master’s programmes, one in East Asian Studies and another in Japanese Language and Literature, while two more Master’s Programmes, one in Chinese Language and Literature and another in Korean Language and Literature, are proposed to be launched shortly (they have already been passed by the Academic Council), in addition to the six one year programmes, two each (basic and intermediate) in Chinese language, Japanese language and Korean Language. While the Master’s in East Asian Studies is designed to create experts in the field of area studies, the Master’s programmes in Language and Literature are designed to promote studies in the various aspects of language, linguistics and literature, and the six one year courses in basic and intermediate levels of language are meant for those who wish to become translators and interpreters in these languages to work for various agencies, NGOs, international organizations, embassies and multinational organizations. These language courses also serve as the eligibility requirement for those who wish to enter into the Master’s course of the respective languages. In addition to these, the Department also offers Master of Philosophy and Doctor of Philosophy programmes in East Asian Studies. *Equipped with an excellent library and an audio-visual laboratory. The library of the Department of East Asian Studies is an unique library of its kind in India with a rich collection on all aspects of China, Japan and Korea, which has been built over the last fifty years and boasts of nearly one lakh collections in English, Chinese, Japanese and Korean languages, enabling all the students and researchers from not only the Department and the colleges of University of Delhi but also other universities, to refer to the books, journals and primary sources related to China, Japan and Korea. The Department is also equipped with its own state of the art audio visual laboratory with forty consoles and all the different types of audio-visual equipments for the purposes of training in language learning as well as creating course modules to cater to the differential needs of the students, apart from screening the movies and documentaries from China, Japan and Korea.
