CRITERIA

Baskets should be juried on those elements that are appropriate for the basket type, purpose, construction material and artistic intent.

Design/Texture Materials suited to the intended use (functional or artistic), design and size of the basket. If traditional, a basket should be symmetrical, evenly shaped all the way around so that it looks good from any angle. If contemporary, assess the uniqueness of shape and “personality” of the basket. Colors and weaving pattern (if applicable) compliment the design. Creative use of various man made or natural materials such as beads, Curls, handles, antlers, driftwood, gourds, ceramics, fabric or any other embellishment to enhance the look of the finished basket.

Craftsmanship Spacing of spokes/weavers is even without wide spaces that catch the eye. Spokes must be kept straight unless otherwise determined by design. Consistent weaving tension. Joins are as inconspicuous as possible. Various techniques. Addition of spokes neatly done. Weave is tightly packed (if applicable). Uniformity of stitches in coiled . Basket feels sturdy, not loose and wobbly. Base is well shaped. Basket sits level or as appropriate to design. Upsett of spokes is cleanly defined (if applicable). Uniformity of shape, design & technique. Well-defined corners, symmetrical circles (if applicable). Spokes used for rim/border in technique are trimmed and secure without cracks. Overlapping ends of the rim should be scarfed or beveled so that the area of overlap is no thicker than the rest of the rim. Handle (if applicable) is well inserted/attached and uniform in shape. Sanded smoothly (unless wrapped). Appropriate to design of basket.

Finishing No bleeding of dyed reed (unless artistic intent). “Hairs” should be trimmed. No metal slivers. The use of stains, either clear or tinted is entirely up to the creator. Overall, does the basket have a finished look.
