Military applications emerged fairly early in the infancy of aviation, in the form of first trials to establish the superiority of the third dimension over the battlefield. Well- known examples include the balloon reconnaissance efforts made in France even before the birth of the aircraft, and it was not long before the first generation of flimsy, underpowered aircraft were being tested in a military environment. The Italians used aircraft for reconnaissance missions at Tripoli in 1910-1912, and the Americans made their first attempts at taking air power to sea as early as 1910-1911. -

Our need in the future is for flexible and adaptable armed forces properly supported to carry out the most likely expeditionary operations. To create a more sustainable and affordable force structure which better meets these operational requirements we have secured additional resources: the 2004 Spending Review allocated £3.7 billion to defence across the Spending Review period, which represents an average real terms increase of 1.4% a year. -

Though non-fictional, Sheldon's work takes on an air of fiction when it hypothesizes about how a third world war in Europe might realistically start, and how it would play out. Like other books in this collection, slogging but indecisive conventional warfare inevitably leads to the use of nuclear weapons. Clancy, Tom. (1986). Red Storm Rising. New York, Berkley Books. Reprint edition (c.2001). Clancy is, of course, the best-known author of the group included here. This work, one of his earliest, describes a NATO-Warsaw Pact conflict on land and on the seas. Cook, J. L. (1990). Armor at Fulda Gap: A Visual Novel of the War of Tomorrow. New York, Avon Books. Cook's illustrated work is an unusual mix of fact and fiction-of real-world armaments that would have been used to fight a third world war as well as fantastic imaginings of what the near future might hold. The title of the book makes reference to two common themes in the theory and literature describing a NATO-Warsaw Pact confrontation in Europe: the Fulda Gap, a historical passage-a "gap" in the otherwise rough terrain-from eastern Europe to the west, named after the German city; and armor, the tanks and mechanized vehicles that would contend for this strategic region. Coyle, Harold. (1987). Team Yankee. New York, Berkley Books. This best-selling work intimately chronicles the efforts of an American tank platoon in defending a small swath of West Germany during a Warsaw Pact invasion. -

The Tornado Years
Continuing our brief history of RAF Honington, Part 4b. The Tornado Years (As mentioned last time, I had originally planned that ‘Part 4’ would include both the Buccaneer and the subsequent Tornado years but lack of time to research and space in the ‘Rag’ to tell the tale meant that I had to separate the two periods. This time we will take our delayed look at the Honington Tornados.) We concluded the previous episode of our tale when the last Buccaneer left Honington in 1984 but to ‘set the scene’ for the next phase we need to wind the clock back to the 1960’s. At that time, the United Kingdom had cancelled the procurement of the TSR2 and the US-built F-111, as previously discussed, but still needed replacements for the ageing Vulcan and Buccaneer strike aircraft. At the same time, aeronautical engineers were looking at variable-geometry, (or ‘swing-wing’), designs - as used on the F-111. These gave the manoeuvrability and cruise-efficiency of ‘straight’ wings with the speed-capability of swept wings. Britain and France had initiated the AFVG, (Anglo French Variable Geometry), project in 1965 but the French pulled out two years later. Britain continued to develop the project and sought new partners to achieve it. Whilst several other nations initially showed interest, ultimately it was only Britain, Germany, Italy and the Netherlands who, in 1969, eventually agreed to form a multi-national company, Panavia Aircraft GmbH to develop and manufacture the MRCA - or Multi-Role Combat Aircraft as it then became known. (The following year the Dutch withdrew from the project citing that the aircraft would be too complicated and technical for their needs.) The new company was owned 15% by the Italians and 42.5% each by Germany and Britain. -
