Patron: Her Majesty The Queen. Registered Charity 231584 BEES AND BEEKEEPING, BY PHIL BOWDEN Branch member, Phil Bowden, lives near Whitby and has been a bee keeper for 40 years, following on from his father being a bee keeper. Here he shares the joy of his hobby with our members. Bees have been on this planet for over 3 million years. We know this because bees have been found in amber, which millions of years ago was the sap from pine trees, in which the bees became trapped. Man has been keeping bees for over 2000 years; they were first kept in hollow logs close to their villages. About five or 6 hundred years ago, man made straw skeps to keep them in. A skep is made from twisted straw, fashioned into a cone. The now traditional hive seen in gardens today, was designed by William Brian Carr in 1827. I use National hives as it is easier for me when I take my hives and bees to the moors in late July for the heather. My season starts in late January / early February. Everything in bee keeping is dictated b the weather. If it is too cold, below 8C, the bees won’t come out. They don’t like wind or rain. The first source of nectar is from snowdrops and crocuses, the main crop is from oil seed rape in mid Phil with grandson, Jack, at the hives. April and May and then during the summer months there are all the flowers in your gardens, then onto the moors in July for the heather blooms. There are three types of bees in a hive; 1. Worker bees look after the queen and baby bees. They clean the hive and guard it. They search for food, collect and store it, and they build & repair the combs 2. Drone mates with the queen and dies after mating. Other drones are killed by the workers during September. 3. The Queen lays eggs, up to 2000 a day in summer and only a few in winter. Worker bees live up to 35 days in summer and up to 6 months in winter. The queen lives for up to 5 years. A hive can house up to 20,000 bees in winter and up to 70,000 in summer. They produce over 200lbs of honey each year, and eat most of it, leaving around 50lb to harvest.

Phil Bowden was called up for National Service in 1958 into the admin branch and served until 1961 after training as a projectionist. He was stationed at RAF Spitalgate and RAF . He worked at the RAF School of Education, for officer training, showing films as part of the courses.

Do you have a story to share with our members? Tell us about your hobby, as Phil has done, or “pull up a sandbag” and relate a Service story, an interesting holiday adventure, or perhaps a plan for the future. Just a few paragraphs with a photo and the editor will do the rest. Please include your RAF Service outline. Send by email to [email protected]. Thanks. Paul Rodway, Vice Chairman & Publicity
