The work was published in 1908 just two years before the overthrow of the Portuguese monarchy. The decadence of the throne in the nineteenth century had led to intellectual criticism in the 1870s and republican revolts and conspiracies in the last years of the century. -

English Customary Weights and Measures Distance In all traditional measuring systems, short distance units are based on the dimensions of the human body. The inch represents the width of a thumb; in fact, in many languages, the word for "inch" is also the word for "thumb." The foot (12 inches) was originally the length of a human foot, although it has evolved to be longer than most people's feet. The yard (3 feet) seems to have gotten its start in England as the name of a 3-foot measuring stick, but it is also understood to be the distance from the tip of the nose to the end of the middle finger of the outstretched hand. Finally, if you stretch your arms out to the sides as far as possible, your total "arm span," from one fingertip to the other, is a fathom (6 feet). Historically, there are many other "natural units" of the same kind, including the digit (the width of a finger, 0.75 inch), the nail (length of the last two joints of the middle finger, 3 digits or 2.25 inches), the palm (width of the palm, 3 inches), the hand (4 inches), the shaftment (width of the hand and outstretched thumb, 2 palms or 6 inches), the span (width of the outstretched hand, from the tip of the thumb to the tip of the little finger, 3 palms or 9 inches), and the cubit (length of the forearm, 18 inches). In Anglo-Saxon England (before the Norman conquest of 1066), short distances seem to have been measured in several ways. -

Fischer, then a distinguished metrologist on the stafF of the National Bureau of Standards, presented a paper entitled "History of the Standard Weights and Measures of the United States" before the First Annual Meeting of the Sealers of Weights and Measures of the United States. This paper quickly came to be considered a classic in its field. It was published by the National Bureau of Standards several times— most recently in 1925 as Miscellaneous Publication 64. For some time it has been out of print and in need of up-to-date revision. The present publication covers the older historical material that Fischer so ably treated; in addition, it includes a brief summary of important later developments affecting the units and standards for length and mass. -

Measurement (from Old French, mesurement) is the assignment of numbers to objects or events.[1] It is a cornerstone of most natural sciences, technology,economics, and quantitative research in other social sciences. Any measurement can be judged by the following meta-measurement criteria values: level of measurement (which includes magnitude), dimensions (units), anduncertainty. They enable comparisons to be done between different measurements and reduce confusion. Even in cases of clear qualitative similarity or difference, increased precision through quantitative measurement is often preferred in order to aid in replication. For example, different colours may beoperationalized based either on wavelengths of light or (qualitative) terms such as "green" and "blue" which are often interpreted differently by different people. The science of measurement is called metrology. A typical tape measure with both metric and US units and two US pennies for comparison Standardization of measurement units Measurements are most commonly made in the SI system, which contains sevenfundamental units: kilogram, metre, candela, second, ampere, kelvin, and mole. Six of these units are artifact-free (defined without reference to a particular physical object which serves as a standard); the definition of one remaining unit, the kilogram is still embodied in an artifact which rests at the BIPM outside Paris. Eventually, it is hoped that new SI definitions will be uniformly artifact-free. Artifact-free definitions fix measurements at an exact value related to a physical constant or other invariable phenomenon in nature, in contrast to standard artifacts which can be damaged or otherwise change slowly over time. -

Family Vineyards
The history of the Miolo Winery began in 1897 when Giuseppe Miolo landed in Brazil, coming from Italy he settled in Lot 43, in the Vale dos Vinhedos, in Bento Gonçalves, where he planted the first vineyards. Serra After a century of work in viticulture in the region, the third generation of the family in Brazil, founded the Miolo Winery in 1989. The first wine of the Miolo brand to be marketed was a Reserve Merlot 1990 vintage, made from the grapes from the Vale dos Vinhedos region, now a Denomination of Origin Vale dos Vinhedos (DOVV). After years of investments, a lot of hard work and recognized quality, Miolo became the largest and most beloved wine group in Brazil. It is the largest exporter of Brazilian wines and is among the main producers of sparkling wines in the country.
