5 Military Rucking Rules Every Backpacker Should Know The military has spent years studying the best way to move under a load (aka “rucking”). Here are 5 military rucking rules that translate well to hikers. “Rucking” is the military term for hiking under load. As you can imagine, this is a huge issue for the military, as soldiers must wear body armor and carry weapons, ammo, water, communications equipment, and other gear as they conduct patrols and missions. Rucking performance and injury prevention are hugely important for military operations and personnel. Movement over ground under load is also a key for hiking and backpacking. In reviewing the research the military has already done on this subject, we discovered five rules. Read on to make sure you’re following these military rucking rules on your next backcountry adventure. 1. One pound on your feet equals five pounds on your back. This old backpacking thumb rule holds true, according to a 1984 study from the U.S. Army Research Institute. They tested how much more energy was expended with different footwear (boots and shoes) and concluded that it take 4.7 to 6.4 times as much energy to move at a given pace when weight is carried on the shoe versus on the torso. In practical terms, this means you could carry half a gallon more of water (a little over 4 pounds) if you buy boots that are a pound lighter, which isn’t hard to do; and that’s a lot of water. Now imagine the energy savings of backpacking in light trail running shoes rather than heavy, leather backpacking boots over the course of 7- day backpacking trip. -

S. Goodfellow, Jr., USN M. U. Clauser Superintendent Provost ABSTRACT: This monograph has been prepared as a text on dimensional analysis for students of Aeronautics at this School. It develops the subject from a viewpoint which is inadequately treated in most standard texts hut which the author's experience has shown to be valuable to students and professionals alike. The analysis treats two types of consistent units, namely, fixed units and natural units. Fixed units include those encountered in the various familiar English and metric systems. Natural units are not fixed in magnitude once and for all but depend on certain physical reference parameters which change with the problem under consideration. Detailed rules are given for the orderly choice of such dimensional reference parameters and for their use in various applications. It is shown that when transformed into natural units, all physical quantities are reduced to dimensionless form. The dimension- less parameters of the well known Pi Theorem are shown to be in this category. An important corollary is proved, namely that any valid physical equation remains valid if all dimensional quantities in the equation be replaced by their dimensionless counterparts in any consistent system of natural units. -

Introduction The cubit is a well-know ancient measure of length, used around various places in the Middle East and Mediterranean region in the distant past. 1 The Beautiful Cubit System I Douglas 2019 It is allegedly based on the length of a human (male) fore-arm. It is typically measured from the back of the elbow to some point between the wrist and the end of the outstretched middle finger, or in some variants, a point beyond that. The problem with this approach is that everyone’s arm is a different length. If the heights of the dynastic Egyptians is taken as representative, then their arms would have been too short to justify the accepted lengths. -

Abstract The medieval ~nglish rod of 5.OJ m has been shown to have been in use back to the 6th c~ntury.The sub-divi'sions so fa.r detected are thirds and sixths of this .rod. '1',10 particular a.spects are considered in this paper. The first is vhether the rod was divided further into feet; it is suggested that the manupes-the foot measured by hand-at 15 to the rod is the likely contender. The second aspect concerns building data from r-Juckine. At least 66 Saxon post-hole buildings have been analysed and, provisionally, it appears that 40 were set out using a rod of about 4.65 m and 25 using the 5.03 m rod. Extant rods in the Saxon bomeland likewise have a mean value of 4.65 m suggesting this measure Has brought over by the original Saxon settlers at Bucking. Wells Michigan Center for Theoretical Physics (MCTP) University of Michigan, Ann Arbor Abstract: Conversions are listed between basis units of natural units system where ~ = c = 1. Important fundamental constants are given in various equivalent natural units based on GeV, seconds, and meters. Natural units basic conversions Natural units are defined to give ~ = c = 1. All quantities with units then can be written in terms of a single base unit. It is customary in high-energy physics to use the base unit GeV. But it can be helpful to think about the equivalences in terms of other base units, such as seconds, meters and even femtobarns. The conversion factors are based on various combinations of ~ and c (Olive 2014). For example −25 1 = ~ = 6:58211928(15) × 10 GeV s; and (1) 1 = c = 2:99792458 × 108 m s−1: (2) From this we can derive several useful basic conversion factors and 1 = ~c = 0:197327 GeV fm; and (3) 2 11 2 1 = (~c) = 3:89379 × 10 GeV fb (4) where I have not included the error in ~c conversion but if needed can be obtained by consulting the error in ~. Note, the value of c has no error since it serves to define the meter, which is the distance light travels in vacuum in 1=299792458 of a second (Olive 2014). The unit fb is a femtobarn, which is 10−15 barns. A barn is defined to be 1 barn = 10−24 cm2. The prefexes letters, such as p on pb, etc., mean to multiply the unit after it by the appropropriate power: femto (f) 10−15, pico (p) 10−12, nano (n) 10−9, micro (µ) 10−6, milli (m) 10−3, kilo (k) 103, mega (M) 106, giga (G) 109, terra (T) 1012, and peta (P) 1015. -

The work was published in 1908 just two years before the overthrow of the Portuguese monarchy. The decadence of the throne in the nineteenth century had led to intellectual criticism in the 1870s and republican revolts and conspiracies in the last years of the century.
