(3) This study succeeded in finding the intertextual intrinsic elements (characters) of the novel "Atheis" by Achdiat Karta Mihardja and the novel "Ronggeng Dukuh Paruk" by Ahmad Tohari. Keywords: Intrinsic; Intertextual; Novel Elements Introduction Literary narratives or literary works are seen as traces of everything related or related to real life, of course in this case it can include socio-cultural life and others that occur in people's lives. Socio- cultural problems that occur in people's lives can be used as inspiration for a literary expert or writer. Real problems that occur in the community will be taken and processed by a literary expert or a writer and then transformed into a literary work full of aesthetics and have certain values. Intertextual Study of Main Characters on the Novel "Atheis" by Achdiat Karta Mihardja and "Ronggeng Dukuh Paruk" by Ahmad Tohari 179 International Journal of Multicultural and Multireligious Understanding (IJMMU) Vol. 8, No. 4, April 2021 Teeuw (Retno Winarni, 2009: 1) states that literature originated from Sanskrit, namely from the word "sas" which means "directing, giving directions or instructions", while "tra" means "tools or means". In the current definition (Malay), literature is often defined as writing. The current definition is developing, with the addition of the word "su" which means "beautiful or good". So, the real meaning of the word "susastra" is beautiful writing. The term "novel" is taken from Italian, namely the word "novell", if interpreted into German, namely "novella". Literally or the meaning of the word "novella" contains a meaning of "small goods or objects" until one day it is interpreted and agreed upon as a short story. The words "novella" and "novelle" have a similar meaning to the name in Indonesian, namely the word "novelette" (English: novelette), which means that literary works are in the form of fictional prose with sufficient length, in this case, it can be interpreted as medium or in other words, neither too long nor too short, Burhan Nurgiyantoro (1998: 9-10). Etymologically or from its origin, the word "novel" comes from the word "novellus" which has a meaning, namely "new". In another sense, the word "novel" can mean that a novel is a literary work (fiction) that is the newest. In Indonesia, the terms "romance" and "novel" are defined as separate terms. The term "romance" is interpreted as a story in the form of prose but long, containing various kinds of characters and many explanations about the character's life. Meanwhile, the word "novel" can be interpreted as a story about a piece of the life of the character, for example at the time of his marriage, or it could be after the love phase or when a character experiences psychological disturbances (Jakob Sumardjo, 1984: 65). Herman J. Waluyo and Nugraheni Eko Wardani (2009: 10) argue that the elements of an imaginary essay or fictional prose can be: a) characterization, b) theme, c) plot, d) point of view) e) setting, f) dialogue between characters g) background (background), h) story and telling time, i) language style, story, time and j) mandate. The opinion of other experts, namely Jakob Sumardjo (1984: 54) states that there are several elements of imaginary works (fiction), including the following: 1) theme, 2) plot or story line 3) characterization, 4) atmosphere of the story, 5) place of event (setting) 6) point of view and 7) story style. Julia Kristeva is a post-structuralist thinker from France, who introduced the term intertextual for the first time. The creation of an intertextual approach as a result of a denial reaction to the building blocks approach (structural approach), this approach views literary narratives apart from its own literary history and its relation to socioculturalism. In order to obtain a complete meaning from literary works, analysis of literary works cannot be separated from the historical context and the socio-cultural context (Nani Tuloli, 2000: 55). Khoirul Mugtofa (2003: 1) examines or analyzes Julia Kristeva's intertextuality as follows: Julia Kristeva argues that a text cannot or cannot be of itself, but it is intended and fragments of previous text quotations. A literary work or text can become popular or famous if the text contains various kinds of sentences that come from other texts or are related to one another. The approach that studies or examines literature by linking or linking a text with its predecessor is called the intertextual approach. In principle, every text must be read as well as must master or be proficient with other texts that precede it. Wherever and whenever a text cannot be independent, in this case, it means that creating a text cannot be without the influence of other texts. The principle of intertextuality is in line with the opinion of Julia Kristeva (Culler, 1975: 139) who says that: Every text shape as a mosaic of citations, every text is the absorption and transformation of other text. … A work can only be read in connection with or against other text, which provides a grid through which it is read and structured by establishing expectations that enable one to pick out salient Intertextual Study of Main Characters on the Novel "Atheis" by Achdiat Karta Mihardja and "Ronggeng Dukuh Paruk" by Ahmad Tohari 180 International Journal of Multicultural and Multireligious Understanding (IJMMU) Vol. 8, No. 4, April 2021 features and give them a structure. In the above quote, Culler explained that each text is formed in the form of fractions or pieces in the form of a quote. Each text results from imitation and alteration or modification or alteration of other texts. A work can only be read in relation to or contradicting other texts, only a kind of grid, through which the text is read and structured by creating expectations that allow the reader to pick salient features and give it a structure. Nyoman Kutha Ratna (2004: 172) says that intertextual is a research approach carried out by the method of mentioning the relationship between two texts or even more than two texts. The selected text as the interpreted text is not limited by or of the same type (same genre), but an intertext approach offers a huge opportunity for the researcher with the aim of finding the program, then intertextual studies can be carried out between two literary excerpts. In the study of intertext, there is a relationship or bond, in which there are similarities and differences or contradictions. Research Methods This study was held in a period of approximately 6 months, this study uses the Atheist novel and the RDP novel from July to December. The approach used in this study is a qualitative study, while the type is descriptive research. Meanwhile, the strategy used in this study is in the form of case studies, then the data is in the form of sentences or expressions found in Atheist novels and RDP novels, while the data sources are the two novels. Data collection is done by researchers using non-interactive data aggregation (collection) techniques, which is a technique that has no influence between the researcher and the data source. This is because the data source is in the form of an object so you will not know if it is being studied. The data validation used the source triangulation technique, meanwhile, the analysis technique used the interactive analysis technique. Discussion 1. Intertextual Intrinsic Elements (Character) Novel Atheist and Novel RDP Based on the study conducted by the researcher, the researcher obtained a conclusion on the character/characterization aspect. The conclusion is that there are similarities and differences in the elements of the character, for example, in the main character. The similarity contained in the character element is that the main character has doubts and the main female character in the two novels is equally beautiful. The following are quotes that show that the main character in the two novels has a character that is hesitating or hesitating, besides that the main character in both novels has a beautiful face.

THE THORNY ROSE: THE AVOIDANCE OF PASSION IN MODERN INDONESIAN LITERATURE1 Harry Aveling One of the important shortcomings of modern Indonesian literature is the failure of its authors, on the whole young, well-educated men of the upper and more modernized strata of society, to deal in a convincing manner with the topic of adult heterosexual passion. This problem includes, and partly arises from, an inadequacy in portraying realistic female char acters which verges, at times, on something which might be considered sadism. What is involved here is not merely an inability to come to terms with Western concepts of romantic love, as explicated, for example, by the late C. S. Lewis in his book The Allegory of Love. The failure to depict adult heterosexual passion on the part of modern Indonesian authors also stands in strange contrast to the frankness and gusto with which the writers of the various branches of traditional Indonesian and Malay litera ture dealt with this topic. Indeed it stands in almost as great a contrast with the practice of Peninsular Malay literature today. In Javanese literature, as Pigeaud notes in his history, The Literature of Java, "Poems and tales describing erotic situations are very much in evidence . descriptions of this kind are to be found in almost every important mythic, epic, historical and romantic Javanese text."^ In Sundanese literature, there is not only the open violence of Sang Kuriang's incestuous desires towards his mother (who conceived him through inter course with a dog), and a further wide range of openly sexual, indeed often heavily Oedipal stories, but also the crude direct ness of the trickster Si-Kabajan tales, which so embarrassed one commentator, Dr.

An analysis on the translation of Indonesian passive voice in “atheis”, a translated novel by R.J. Maguire Zazim Ristasari K.2202546 SEBELAS MARET UNIVERSITY CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION A. Research Background People need language as an instrument of communication to express what they want, need, and feel. Samsuri (1991, p. 4) states that language is a tool that is used by people to express their thoughts, feelings, their willing and their behaviors; a tool that is used to influence and to be influenced. As a means of communication, language has an important role in all aspects of human life, such as science, technology, politics, trade, and religion. It is proved that translation is very important since people cannot understand the message of the scientific literature whose languages are not their mother tongue or their first languages. Connecting with this, Hartoko in Widyamartaya states “Kebutuhan menerjemahkan buku bukanlah tanda keterbelakangan, justru sebaliknya tanda keterbukaan, tanda kegiatan hendak ikut serta dalam tukar-menukar informasi (2003: p. 9). That is why there must be an effort to develop translation activities. It can be the translation of foreign languages into Indonesian or from Indonesian into other languages especially English. There are many requirements that must be fulfilled by a translator in order to make the translation good and understandable. The translator has to have: (1) complete knowledge of the source language (SL), (2) complete knowledge of the target language (TL), (3) an intimate acquaintance with the subject matter, and (4) complete knowledge of translation theory (Nida: 1964, p. 145). The needs of translated books, especially English, become wider in order to support the development of science and technology in developing country such as Indonesia.

Kamus Besar Bahasa Indonesia (2005:582) mengartikan kolonialisme sebagai penguasaan oleh suatu negara atas daerah atau bangsa lain dengan maksud untuk memperluas negara itu. Sebagai lembaga penerbitan milik pemerintah kolonial, Balai Pustaka berusaha mempromosikan pengguasaan bahasa melayu tinggi yang dipelopori oleh Ch. • Analysis Data and Findings
Chapter IV Analysis Data and Findings In analyzing the data, the writer used descriptive method, which means the data was analyzed in order to find how the structure of the plot, setting and character in Mihardja’s Atheis , and how the structure of the novel represented the theme of the novel. Wellek and Warren (1990: 280) found that critics who analyzed novel generally distinguish three forming elements of novel, those are plot, characterization and settings, whereas the latest element has a symbolic character and the modern theory called that as the atmosphere and tone. In this case, the writer only analyzed the structure Plot, Characters and Setting of the novel Atheist by Achdiyat K. Mihardja, and how structures of the novel represent the theme of the novel. Those are some intrinsic elements which writer believes are enough to represent the theme from Mihardja’s Atheis . 4.1 Data Analysis 4.1.1 Plot Structure In discussion part of plot the writer used Freytag’s Pyramid theory as the reference. This theory divided the plot structure into seven kinds, those are; Exposition, Inciting Incident, Rising Action, Climax, Falling Action, Resolution, Denouement. 1 Universitas Pasundan a) Exposition In this part, the author of the novel usually described about the setting scene. They introduce the characters and setting, providing description and background. In this novel, Atheis , the exposition began on the chapter two which introduced one of the main characters, Hasan, through first person point of view as the narrator. Atheis has two importance things that have analyzed in the exposition, the first is about Hasan’s life such as Hasan family background that build Hasan’s character as a religious person.

A Psychological Thriller in Donna Tartt’s the Goldfinch Abu Fanani (A Lecturer In Faculty of Adab and Humanities UIN Sunan Ampel Surabaya) Abstract In this article, the researcher analyzes a psychological thriller in the form of anxiety in Donna Tartt’s the Goldfinch . The researcher then uses psychological theory. The researcher analyzes the main character that undergoes a psychological worry; anxiety. At last, the researcher draws conclusion that the main character, Theodore Decker undergoes recurrent recollection(s), feeling humiliated, worry, fear, nightmares, and feelings of terror. Key Words : anxiety, feeling humiliated, worry, fear, nightmares, feelings of terror. Introduction Literature and society remain inseparable in that their existence influences each other; on one hand, literature affects society. On the other hand, society affects literature. Levin (Scott, 1962:126) states that literature and society are mutually connected. Both affect each other in that society gets the literature’s effect, on the other hand, literature gets the society’s effect. Similar to this statement, Olsen (1978:203-204) has the idea of the influence of literature to society as well as of society to literature. The researcher may well, as to the influence of literature to society, refer to a work by Harriet Beecher Stowe’s Uncle’s Tom’s Cabin or Life among the Lowly influences the society to be social emancipation, to abolish racial discrimination between black and white people (Hardjana, 1981:70-71). English philosophers and poets are said to have

SECULAR, RELIGIOUS AND SUPERNATURAL – AN EASTERN INDONESIAN CATHOLIC EXPERIENCE OF FEAR (Autoethnographic Reflections on the Reading of a New Order-Era Propaganda Text) Justin Laba Wejak Submitted in total fulfilment of the requirements of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy 2017 Faculty of Arts The University of Melbourne Abstract This thesis examines an Eastern Indonesian Catholic experience of fear by analysing how a New Order-era propaganda text dealing with the political upheavals of 1965- 66 triggers and maintains fear in one Eastern Indonesian Catholic reader – myself. It uses the methodology of autoethnography to examine the fears that I myself experienced in 2004 when encountering a 1967 Catholic propaganda text entitled, ‘Dari Madiun ke Lubang Buaya, dari Lubang Buaya ke…?’ [From Madiun to the Crocodile Hole, from the Crocodile Hole to...?]). By analysing my own experience of fear in reading the text, I argue that the Eastern Indonesian Catholic experience of fear involves three interlocking dimensions – secular, religious and supernatural. These three forms of fear are experienced simultaneously by the reader (myself). The From Madiun text is primarily a secular narrative of the 1965-66 events, but the reader brings his culturally-conditioned religious and supernatural fears when reading it. I argue that supernatural fear is the most unspoken but most powerful form of fear that I experienced when reading the text, and this reflects my membership of the Lamaholot community in which supernatural fear is pervasive. The thesis contends that in relation to 1965, the Catholic Church’s propaganda created an explicit secular fear of communists, an implicit religious fear of Muslims, and a hidden supernatural fear of ghosts.
