KEY TO AGE SUITABILITY Each song in this manual has a photo key showing the indicated age groups the song is most suited to. Ages are indica ve only.

Infant 0 - 18 months

Toddler 18 months to 3 years

Young child 3 years to 6 years

INSTRUMENT SONGS Before using any instruments explore the sounds they make and demonstrate how to play them correctly. In any of our instrument songs, it is important to note that playing the instrument that the lyrics suggest is not necessary. A range of maracas (shakers), castanets, bells and drums would be ideal, with each child being able to choose 2 - 3 things to use.

MAT SONGS Mat songs are a good way to draw the children in and make them feel welcome. Mat songs have good language opportuni es and make good discussion starters.

ACTION SONGS Ac ons songs are great for developing gross motor skills, crea vity, listening skills, and spa al awareness.

SCARVES Scarves a great prop to use to help crea vity, spa al awareness and gross motor skills. You can also use hankies, long socks such as rugby socks , pom-poms and ribbons. Having one prop in each hand helps develop both sides of the body.

4 Copyright © 2011 Judi Cranston. All rights reserved. TAPPERS (CLAVES, RAKAU, RHYTHM STICKS) Tappers are great for rhythm work, crea vity and developing fine motor skills. If you don’t have the real thing you can use other things such as wooden doweling, rolled up newspapers or chops cks. Blue plumber’s pipe cut into about 20 cm lengths is a good alterna ve as well.

PARACHUTE AND LYCRA PANELS These are fantas c to use for spa al awareness and coopera ve work. Break larg- er groups into 2, with half going under the parachute while the song is on, or get parents to hold onto the panel and children go under some mes as well.

BEAN BAGS These are good for developing catching and throwing skills, hand-eye coordina on and balancing.

OTHER PROPS Other props such as puppets, stars or toys can help with language associa ons as well as being fun! They are also great for developing crea vity, social skills and fine motor skills.

MUSICAL AND OTHER SKILLS Each song has suggested learning outcomes for both music and other areas. Again this list is not exclusive, in fact you will find that most songs offer children a huge range of learning opportuni es, we have just listed the most obvious ones.

EXTENSION ACTIVITES Each song also has some ideas for extension ac vi es, offering sugges ons on linking in the songs with other learning opportuni es.

19 Copyright© 2009 Famous Fish Music Ltd. Lyrics Copyright© Judi Cranston. All rights reserved. Christmas Game Number 1 - Decorate Your Tree

This game covers two of our favourite things: music and art! The object of the game is to get your children to decorate your very own Christmas Tree. That is fun in itself, but we want to take it up a notch and add some cra , music and move- ment to the ac vity. Here’s what you do…

Prepara on Steps:

Step One: Create two big Christmas Tree shapes from cardboard and have the children paint them green.

Step Two: Each child will need to create their own decora on to hang on the tree. So print out our awesome templates or draw up your own. Have the children colour them, even add s ckers and gli er if you want to.

Step Three: Add something s cky to the back of the decora on like Bluetack, Cellotape or Velcro dots

The Game: Hang your cardboard trees on the wall at pre-schooler height Have the children line up in two even lines holding their decora ons Prepare some music to play Have the children move one at a me to s ck their decora on on the trees Here’s the catch: the children can only move when the music is playing! Have a teacher pause the music periodically during the game. The children must freeze when the mu- sic stops.

Musical Skills: Listening Other Skills: Crea vity Spa al awareness

20 Copyright © 2011 Judi Cranston. All rights reserved. 21 Copyright© 2009 Famous Fish Music Ltd. Lyrics Copyright© Judi Cranston. All rights reserved. Christmas Game Number 2 – Pass the Star

The Game: Have the children sit on the floor in a circle around the edge of the mat Give one child a Christmas themed item to begin with. If you want an easy Christmas item, then print our star template onto coloured paper and laminate it.

The teacher will either strum on a ukulele, beat on a drum, or even clap their hands. Sing the song that we taught in the video, in such a way that it is easy for the children to recognise the tempo. “Pass the star , pass the star, we can pass the Christmas star.”

The children will pass the star around the circle as the teacher sings. If the teacher sings fast, then the children pass the star fast. If the teacher sings slow, then the children must pass the star around slowly.

Varia ons of The Game: Place stars around the room on the floor. One star for every 2-3 children is ideal. Have the children move around the room as the teacher sings. When the teacher stops singing then the children must put their toe on the closest star to them.

Extensions to The Game: Either the teacher or the children can choose how they should move around the room. Instead of walking, they could hop, or jump, or crawl etc. If you have older children, then they could put a different part of the body on the stars when the music stops. Instead of just their toe it could be their heel, a finger, or an elbow.

Musical Skills: Listening, rhythm, tempo, pitch Other Skills: Crea vity Spa al awareness Crea vity Fine Motor Skills

22 Copyright © 2011 Judi Cranston. All rights reserved. 23 Copyright© 2009 Famous Fish Music Ltd. Lyrics Copyright© Judi Cranston. All rights reserved. Crea ng #1 – Twinkle with a Twist

For this game, you will need 2 different coloured star shapes. Use the template provided and print it onto 4 different colours of paper. Laminate them for strength.

The Game: Pick 2 different coloured star shapes. Have the children decide which colour they think is a fast colour and which is a slow colour. Explain to the children that when the teacher holds up the fast coloured star then they have to sing the words to Twinkle Twinkle Li le Star fast. When the teacher holds up the slow col- oured star then they have to sing the words slowly.

Choose a star to start with and hold it up. The children have to start singing the song at the corresponding speed. Switch the stars between lines so that the children have to change the speed that they sing the words at. Try to only change the stars at the end of a line or phrase so that it is easier to switch.

Varia ons of The Game: Choose a third and fourth coloured star. Have the children decide which one is a loud star and which one is a quiet star. Sing the song through at the volume corresponding to the star being held up.

Extensions to The Game: When using the volume varia ons, hold the stars behind your back so that the children have to mouth the words only. They will need to keep the tempo at the right pace to mouth the words at the right me.

Musical Skills: Listening, rhythm, tempo, pitch, volume Other Skills: Crea vity Spa al awareness Crea vity Concentra on

24 Copyright © 2011 Judi Cranston. All rights reserved. Crea ng #2 – Our Christmas Tree Song

The object of this game is to have the children use their imagina ons and think about a cer- tain theme. They are going to create a new song about a Christmas Tree to the tune of The Wheels on the Bus. The Game: Sing “The Wheels on the Bus” so that they are familiar with the tune if necessary. Talk about Christmas and what items might be on the Christmas Tree Take 4 individual sugges ons about what the things on the Christmas Tree might do… The lights on the tree flash on and off The nsel on the tree will sparkle and shine The star on the tree sits up the top

Sing each verse through with the children Sing your new song for the parents to enjoy at your Christmas Party!

Varia ons of The Game: You do not have to just use this method at Christmas me. There are plenty of other themes that you can write a song about with the children by using a familiar tune. You might write a song about spring or winter, Halloween, the first day of school, anything you can think of!

Use different tunes and rewrite their words, Mary Had a Li le Lamb or Hot Cross Buns are other simple tunes to try.

Extensions to The Game Make up ac ons to go along with your new lyrics
