The ABC of Sheffield Music Nostalgia - SLIDESHOW - the Star Page 1 of 2
The ABC of Sheffield music nostalgia - SLIDESHOW - The Star Page 1 of 2 The ABC of Sheffield music nostalgia - SLIDESHOW Video See all the bands in our slideshow Just like old times: Heaven 17’s Glenn Gregory and Martyn Ware, top right ABC’s Martin Fry and, above, Phil Oakey « Previous « Previous Next » Next » ADVERTISEMENT Published Date: 15 December 2008 By John Quinn A MAJOR pop music event took place on Saturday night. But let's ignore The X Factor. Several thousand Sheffielders did, instead opting for a night of not-just-nostalgia with three of the best-known acts ever to hail from around here – The Human League, ABC and Heaven 17. Whatever entertainment Simon Cowell's crew provides, one negative effect is spoiling the suspense and potential surprise of the race for the Christmas number one single. However the crowd at an impressively almost-full Arena preferred to hark back to the days when the festive chart-topper could be made by a weird synthesizer group whose singer had responded to a split in the ranks by recruiting two teenage girls with no musical talent except the ability to dance and sing. Well, sort of... The city's music scene at that time consisted largely of electronic experimentalists, some of whom suddenly discovered they could write pop songs. Very good pop songs at that, which sold by the bucketload until the tide of fashion changed. The acts still exist, albeit after several line-up changes each, and occasionally release albums to diminishing returns, so whoever decided to combine all three pulled off a masterstroke. -

When Strawberry Studios closed down the staff were busy clearing out the building. There were at least 20,000 copy masters from various bands and the artistes or their agents. They were contacted as to whether they wished to buy the tapes from the Strawberry library because they were clearing out. Mostly the artistes already had their own copies and said Strawberry should dispose of them. Some asked for the copy masters and these were handed over. The remaining copy masters were consigned to the skips. A colleague David Drennan was assigned the task of contacting as many of the clients as possible about their tapes. In the case of Factory Records, David Drennan remembers that they only asked for The Happy Mondays tapes and did not want any others. (see copy email ‘Dave Drennan’) Later I discovered that Factory Records had parted company with Joy Division/New Order. I felt that the tapes of Martin Hannett's work i.e. the ones he produced should not be destroyed. That is why I removed them from the skip and rescued them from landfill. When Warners were threatening court action I contacted Nick Turnbull (see copy email ‘Nick Turnbull’) who had been the owner of Strawberry Studios and who closed it down. -

ADAM and the ANTS Adam and the Ants Were Formed in 1977 in London, England
ADAM AND THE ANTS Adam and the Ants were formed in 1977 in London, England. They existed in two incarnations. One of which lasted from 1977 until 1982 known as The Ants. This was considered their Punk era. The second incarnation known as Adam and the Ants also featured Adam Ant on vocals, but the rest of the band changed quite frequently. This would mark their shift to new wave/post-punk. They would release ten studio albums and twenty-five singles. Their hits include Stand and Deliver, Antmusic, Antrap, Prince Charming, and Kings of the Wild Frontier. A large part of their identity was the uniform Adam Ant wore on stage that consisted of blue and gold material as well as his sophisticated and dramatic stage presence. Click the band name above. ECHO AND THE BUNNYMEN Formed in Liverpool, England in 1978 post-punk/new wave band Echo and the Bunnymen consisted of Ian McCulloch (vocals, guitar), Will Sergeant (guitar), Les Pattinson (bass), and Pete de Freitas (drums). They produced thirteen studio albums and thirty singles. Their debut album Crocodiles would make it to the top twenty list in the UK. Some of their hits include Killing Moon, Bring on the Dancing Horses, The Cutter, Rescue, Back of Love, and Lips Like Sugar. A very large part of their identity was silohuettes. Their music videos and album covers often included silohuettes of the band. They also have somewhat dark undertones to their music that are conveyed through the design. Click the band name above. THE CLASH Formed in London, England in 1976, The Clash were a punk rock group consisting of Joe Strummer (vocals, guitar), Mick Jones (vocals, guitar), Paul Simonon (bass), and Topper Headon (drums). -
Is Rock Music in Decline? a Business Perspective
Jose Dailos Cabrera Laasanen Is Rock Music in Decline? A Business Perspective Helsinki Metropolia University of Applied Sciences Bachelor of Business Administration International Business and Logistics 1405484 22nd March 2018 Abstract Author(s) Jose Dailos Cabrera Laasanen Title Is Rock Music in Decline? A Business Perspective Number of Pages 45 Date 22.03.2018 Degree Bachelor of Business Administration Degree Programme International Business and Logistics Instructor(s) Michael Keaney, Senior Lecturer Rock music has great importance in the recent history of human kind, and it is interesting to understand the reasons of its de- cline, if it actually exists. Its legacy will never disappear, and it will always be a great influence for new artists but is important to find out the reasons why it has become what it is in now, and what is the expected future for the genre. This project is going to be focused on the analysis of some im- portant business aspects related with rock music and its de- cline, if exists. The collapse of Gibson guitars will be analyzed, because if rock music is in decline, then the collapse of Gibson is a good evidence of this. Also, the performance of independ- ent and major record labels through history will be analyzed to understand better the health state of the genre. The same with music festivals that today seem to be increasing their popularity at the expense of smaller types of live-music events. The pivotal role of social networks in the cultural production of music is first examined by treating an independent record label of the post- punk era as an offline social network. -
Forest of Imagination: Meet the Artists, Including Heaven 17'S Martyn Ware
⏲ 06 June 2019, 16:39 (BST) Forest of Imagination: meet the artists Meet five artists who are part of Bath’s pop-up contemporary arts event Forest of Imagination, taking place 20-24 June 2019. Find out the music that most moves Heaven 17’s Martyn Ware; the favourite artworks of renowned paper-cutter Jessica Palmer; and where Tate-exhibitor Bob and Roberta Smith feels happiest. Get to know Bath based artists Clare Day and Perry Harris, and why Forest of Imagination draws them back, year after year. Martyn Ware A founding member of both The Human League and Heaven 17, Martyn is a London based musician, composer, arranger, record producer, and music programmer. In 2001 he co-founded Illustrious Company to exploit the creative possibilities of three-dimensional sound technology. Where do you get your inspiration for new soundscapes? The piece I’m creating for Forest 2019 stems from my fascination with reminiscence and memory. I’m exploring the bond that the very young and the very old have with one another. These people are at the opposite ends of their life but share so many insights about life. I thought I’d reveal this affinity by putting the words of the old in the mouths of the young and vice-versa. What pieces of music most move you? There’s no end to beauty in music. Symphony No. 9 by Gustav Mahler makes me want to cry. Samuel Barber’s ‘Adagio for String’ (the theme music to ‘Platoon’), is another powerful piece. John William’s score for ‘Close Encounters of a Third Kind’ is masterful.
