HIPNESS, HYBRIDITY, AND “NEO-BOHEMIAN” HIP-HOP: RETHINKING EXISTENCE IN THE AFRICAN DIASPORA A Dissertation Presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School of Cornell University in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy by Maxwell Lewis Williams August 2020 © 2020 Maxwell Lewis Williams HIPNESS, HYBRIDITY, AND “NEO-BOHEMIAN” HIP-HOP: RETHINKING EXISTENCE IN THE AFRICAN DIASPORA Maxwell Lewis Williams Cornell University 2020 This dissertation theorizes a contemporary hip-hop genre that I call “neo-bohemian,” typified by rapper Kendrick Lamar and his collective, Black Hippy. I argue that, by reclaiming the origins of hipness as a set of hybridizing Black cultural responses to the experience of modernity, neo- bohemian rappers imagine and live out liberating ways of being beyond the West’s objectification and dehumanization of Blackness. In turn, I situate neo-bohemian hip-hop within a history of Black musical expression in the United States, Senegal, Mali, and South Africa to locate an “aesthetics of existence” in the African diaspora. By centering this aesthetics as a unifying component of these musical practices, I challenge top-down models of essential diasporic interconnection. Instead, I present diaspora as emerging primarily through comparable responses to experiences of paradigmatic racial violence, through which to imagine radical alternatives to our anti-Black global society. Overall, by rethinking the heuristic value of hipness as a musical and lived Black aesthetic, the project develops an innovative method for connecting the aesthetic and the social in music studies and Black studies, while offering original historical and musicological insights into Black metaphysics and studies of the African diaspora. -

Recent Critical Praise for My Brightest Diamond's This Is My Hand
Recent critical praise for My Brightest Diamond’s This Is My Hand Favorite Songs of 2014 “‘Pressure’: This baroque pop gem opens with drum corps and woodwinds, tacks on a tribal rhythm breakdown and just goes for it. All the way.” “…one of the most powerful and dramatic voices of the past decade.” “…an ability to cultivate intimacy through flawless, complex production with a beating heart.” “As a musician, Worden (who performs as My Brightest Diamond) builds her songs deliberately and impeccably…words are painted, sounds are sculpted, and the nature of Worden’s voice itself adds dimension—more than a single vocalist usually can. Her wholly enveloping, finely tuned alto sounds by turns forceful, vulnerable, cooing, playful, and endlessly emotive.” “…has a feeling for both the grandeur and the grain, building every sweeping gesture in her music out of a swarm of small details.” The Best of 2014 “…added to her smart, savvy chamber pop the influence of funk and marching bands. Her flawless voice pecks, jabs and floats above a world of rhythm that gives the new music its motion and undeniable heartbeat.” “At times, This Is My Hand all but commands listeners to dance.” “On her new album, This Is My Hand, she continues to reach far and wide with great success, adding marching-band rhythms and funky horns to her mix.” “…sounds like a modern-day Nina Simone…” “…This is My Hand works on a visceral level, conjuring Worden’s intended image of tribal, fireside collaboration through a rich diversity of texture, detail, and tone.” “…successful exercise in percussive, jagged art-pop that explores themes of self-acceptance, sensuality, and community.” “...unique and oddly beautiful.” “…presents an invigorating progression of Worden’s sonic palette…” #3: MBE Producer Ariana Morgenstern’s Top Albums of 2014 “…gorgeous new album…” “This Is My Hand is an album I would recommend to anyone—for exactly all the reasons that it’s hard to write about. -

How to Re-Shine Depeche Mode on Album Covers
Sociology Study, December 2015, Vol. 5, No. 12, 920‐930 D doi: 10.17265/2159‐5526/2015.12.003 DAVID PUBLISHING Simple but Dominant: How to Reshine Depeche Mode on Album Covers After 80’s Cinla Sekera Abstract The aim of this paper is to analyze the album covers of English band Depeche Mode after 80’s according to the principles of graphic design. Established in 1980, the musical style of the band was turned from synth‐pop to new wave, from new wave to electronic, dance, and alternative‐rock in decades, but their message stayed as it was: A non‐hypocritical, humanist, and decent manner against what is wrong and in love sincerely. As a graphic design product, album covers are pre‐print design solutions of two dimensional surfaces. Graphic design, as a design field, has its own elements and principles. Visual elements and typography are the two components which should unite with the help of the six main principles which are: unity/harmony; balance; hierarchy; scale/proportion; dominance/emphasis; and similarity and contrast. All album covers of Depeche Mode after 80’s were designed in a simple but dominant way in order to form a unique style. On every album cover, there are huge color, size, tone, and location contrasts which concluded in simple domination; domination of a non‐hypocritical, humanist, and decent manner against what is wrong and in love sincerely. Keywords Graphic design, album cover, design principles, dominance, Depeche Mode Design is the formal and functional features graphic design are line, shape, color, value, texture, determination process, made before the production of and space. -

A Content Analysis of Sexual References in Popular Music Introduction Results 57% of songs had at least one sexual reference. 85% of hip-hop/rap songs, 82% of R&B/soul songs, and “Music is more important than any other media type in managing mood and expressing identity” (Lonsdale 57% of pop songs had sexual references. & North, 2011). Because of this, musical artists have a great power to influence the listeners on an A two-way chi square analysis revealed that there were more hip-hop/rap, pop, and R&B/soul songs with individual and group basis and share messages about life, society, and even sexuality (Selfhout et al., 2009). -
What's That Sound?
What‘s That Sound? Bittles‘ Magazine | Record Review When I tell you that there is lots of great music coming out this month I am not just saying this because I have been given lots of huge bribes. It is actually true! That is why, this month, the new album reviews will be spread out over two whole weeks instead of the usual one. By JOHN BITTLES And what a line up of fantastic records there is! This week alone we’ve got the raucous rock of Royal Blood, the psychedelic weirdness of The Wytches, the lush house of Roman Flügel, the strange, techno atmospherics of Ital and tons more. So get your ears ready, your headphones on your head, and let us begin. Since I have been obsessed with this record over these last couple of weeks it is only right to start with the gorgeous house stylings of Happiness is Happening by techno legend Roman Flügel. The follow-up to 2011’s excellent Fatty Folders has been a long time coming, yet it is more than worth the wait. With a light house feel the record’s ten tracks touch on ambient, shoegaze, acid and just about every style of music you would care to name. Opener Connecting The Ghost is a beautiful chug of a tune recalling M83 in its spectral majesty. Friendship Song quickly follows, with a laidback italo-style groove that leads us into the first half of the album which is stuffed full of gently chilled delights. The second half is more dancefloor-based, but is every bit as good.
