Job Supporting Document This Will Open in a New Window SPECIALTY DOCTOR (3 posts) Gastroenterology Craigavon Area Hospital ROYAL COLLEGE ROYAL COLLEGE APPROVED APPROVAL: JOB TITLE: Specialty Doctor x 3 Posts DEPARTMENT: Gastroenterology BASE/LOCATION: All posts are appointed to the Southern Health and Social Care Trust. The base hospital for this post is CRAIGAVON AREA HOSPITAL however the post holder may be required to work on any site within the Southern Health and Social Care Trust. REPORTS TO: Dr P Murphy – Associate Medical Director ACCOUNTABLE TO: Mrs M McClements – Director of Acute services SUMMARY OF POST: This post will attract a salary of £41,357 - £77,124 per annum based on full-time hours. This is a full-time fixed term position however anyone interested in working part-time / job share is also welcome to apply. This post has an attractive annual leave entitlement of a minimum of 25 days per annum and up to a maximum of 30 days per annum depending on previous experience. The post also has an attractive study leave entitlement of up to 30 days paid leave with expenses in any period of three years. A relocation package may also be available if appropriate. The Southern Trust has established a dedicated revalidation support team which ensures all doctors have an annual appraisal with a trained appraiser and supports all doctors through the revalidation process. The Trust has also appointed corporate, Consultant and SAS Leads for appraisal and revalidation. The Trust supports the requirements for continuing professional development (CPD) as laid down by the GMC and is committed to providing time and financial support for these activities. The post will attract all the terms and conditions and employment benefits associated with an NHS post e.g. NHS indemnity; access to NHS pension scheme and many additional benefits such as child care vouchers etc. THE SOUTHERN TRUST The Southern Trust is one of the largest employers in Northern Ireland and Craigavon Area and Daisy Hill hospitals form the Southern Trust Acute Hospital Network – employing 13,612 staff and serving a population of over 383,000. Each year in our hospital network there are approximately 58,000 inpatient admissions; 37,000 day cases; 363,000 outpatient appointments; 139,000 Emergency Department attendances; and over 5,500 births. The Southern Trust provides integrated hospital, community and primary care services to the areas of Armagh, Banbridge, Craigavon, Dungannon, South Tyrone, Newry and Mourne, across the southern part of Northern Ireland. General acute inpatient hospital services are located in Craigavon Area and Daisy Hill Hospitals and acute Mental Health and Learning Disability inpatient hospital services are located in the Bluestone Unit, also based on the Craigavon Area Hospital site. Doctors in longer term temporary posts may also be able to use this system. As well as Corporate and Departmental Induction each new permanent medical employee will have an opportunity to have an informal meeting with the Medical Director at the end of month three / four of commencement with the Trust during which time they can explore the option of job shadowing a non-clinical manager within their speciality for a morning / afternoon. This will be facilitated via the relevant Associate Medical Director. There is also a fully embedded revalidation and appraisal process which supports all doctors with all of their appraisal and revalidation requirements. Opportunities also exist for doctors to avail of the Trust medical mentoring scheme. To involve patients (and their carers if appropriate) in decision making about their treatment. To maintain professional standards and obligations as set out by the General Medical Council and comply in particular with the GMC’s guidance on Good Medical Practice as amended or substituted from time to time. Carry out any work related to and reasonably incidental to the duties set out in your job plan or rota including keeping of records and the provision of reports, the proper delegation of tasks and maintaining skills and knowledge. There is an expectation that the post holder will participate in medical audit/ quality improvement initiatives. Office accommodation with other medical colleagues, including IT facilities and secretarial support will be provided. CONTINUING PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT The Trust supports the requirements for CPD, as laid down by the Royal College and is committed to providing time and financial support for these activities. REVALIDATION The Trust has the required arrangements in place, as laid down by the Royal College to ensure that all doctors have an annual appraisal with a trained appraiser and supports doctors going through the revalidation process. WORKLOAD FIGURES A full range of Gastroenterology and General Medical services are provided at Craigavon Area Hospital. Gastroenterology outpatient services are also provided at Armagh Community Hospital and South Tyrone Hospital, Dungannon. Endoscopy lists are also provided at South Tyrone Hospital. At Craigavon Area Hospital there are 131 medical beds providing continuous emergency take-in for approximately 11,000 admissions annually. In addition, approximately 16,000 outpatient episodes occur annually in medicine. The Hearty Lives Craigavon project aims to improve heart health for Black Minority Ethnic (BME) and Irish Traveller Communities. The Project commenced in January 2013 and the existing funding stream ceased in March 2016. The Hearty Lives Craigavon Project was led by the Southern Health and Social Care Trust, developed in partnership with Armagh City, Banbridge, and Craigavon Borough Council (the Council), Craigavon Traveller Support Committee, Community Intercultural Programme, and the Public Health Agency; and was funded by the British Heart Foundation. The Regulation and Quality Improvement Authority undertook a review of this area in 2012 and one of their main recommendations was that a regional upper age limit for paediatric care was set. It is the Board’s expectation that by March 2016 children up to their 16th birthday will typically be cared for in a paediatric environment. The draft DHSSPS paediatric strategy which should be published later in 2015 is expected to endorse this approach. Moving to a regional upper age limit of 16th birthday will result in important improvements in care for children across Northern Ireland. In the majority of cases the clinical team with responsibility for the child will remain unchanged as the bulk of activity is in specialties like ENT which have joint paediatric and adult practice. However, in the case of adult medical specialties, which do not routinely look after children, care would transfer to paediatrics in most cases. Delivering this important improvement will not increase overall activity in your Trust. However, there will be a shift in activity from adult to paediatric services. The scale of this in your Trust is relatively modest and is detailed in appendix one of this letter.

    Consultation Document Future Provision of Hospital Services for Older People Consultation from 12th June 2014 until Friday 31st October 2014 1 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY The Trust is committed to supporting older people to live as long as possible in their own homes, living independent lives and being able to choose how their needs are met. We are now caring for more older people at home with the support of a range of community teams and services and making best use of the latest technology. We want to ensure that when older people do need hospital care, that they are able to quickly access care in a hospital environment that is high quality, delivered in an appropriate setting by a team of compassionate, respectful and expert health professionals with access to all the necessary diagnostics, specialist knowledge and treatment. Currently, the Trust provides hospital care for older people at Craigavon Area Hospital, Daisy Hill Hospital, Lurgan Hospital and Loane House (South Tyrone Hospital). Patients admitted to Craigavon or Daisy Hill will have the support of teams of specialist staff; access to a range of diagnostic services; and have 24 hour pharmacy and laboratory support available. In Lurgan Hospital and Loane House, which are small stand- alone units, there is not the same immediate access to all of these services. This means that if a patient’s condition deteriorates they have to be transferred from these hospitals, usually to Craigavon Area Hospital, for assessment, diagnostics and treatment which can be distressing and upsetting for older patients and their families. It is also becoming increasingly difficult to maintain the right level of medical cover at evenings and weekends at Lurgan and Loane House.

    Annual Quality Report 2018/19 Annual Quality Report Annual Quality Report 2018/19 Chief Executive Foreword Messages from Chief Executive - DRAFT I am delighted to introduce the 7th Annual Quality Report for Southern Trust, which highlights some of the fantastic work which is underway across the Southern area and includes the key quality indicators against which we are measured. The launch of Quality 2020 by the Department of Health in 2011 described quality as excellence in safety; effectiveness and ensuring a patient & client focus on the work which we do. During 2018/19 we’ve continued to ensure we focus on all these aspects of quality and indeed how we further embed improvement of services across the Southern area. We’ve been delighted to receive transformation funding in 2018/19 to support us to develop new and innovative ways to transform how we deliver care. This will support us to address the increasing demands which we face across both acute and community services and look forward to seeing the impact that these initiatives make to local lives. We have achieved much in 2018/19 including the opening of the Direct Assessment Unit at Daisy Hill Hospital, also the opening of ‘Willows’, Maternity Bereavement Suite at Craigavon Area Hospital and relatives rooms for intensive care patients at our acute hospitals. Indeed, we are delighted that again in 2018/19 our acute hospital network was recognised at the CHKS UK Top Hospitals Awards.
