John K. Naysmith FELLOW OF THE UNIVERSITY John Naysmith’s extensive career, which began in Northwestern Ontario, has taken him to western and northern Canada, south-east Asia, and equatorial Africa. Regardless of where Naysmith worked, he always emphasized the importance of the human component within natural resources management strategies and policies. In the 1970s John Naysmith was the Canadian Government’s Special Claims Representative for the negotiation of the Western Arctic Inuvialuit Land and Rights Claim. In a letter to Naysmith in May 1977 the Associate Director of the President’s Commission on White House Fellowships, Washington D.C. said that the White House Fellows found the briefings enormously informative and extraordinarily good background and that they came away from the trip to the Canadian Arctic with a substantially enhanced understanding of some of the natural resources and native land claim issues being addressed by the Canadian Government. In 1985 John was appointed senior advisor to the Swiss-based International Union for the Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources and project director for the development and writing of the National Conservation Strategy (NCS) for Nepal. John had dozens of community meetings country-wide, ensuring that the social, cultural and economic needs of the Nepalese became fundamental segments of the conservation strategy along with sound natural resources management practices. In 1988 Naysmith became Director of Lakehead’s School of Forestry and subsequently Founding Dean of the Faculty of Forestry. In addition to earning Faculty status, other achievements of the forestry program while Dr. Naysmith was at the helm included a very successful student recruitment program, a substantially revised undergraduate curriculum and the implementation of four, five-year international projects in Ghana and Nepal with federal grants valued at $5.2 million. A singular pleasure for John while at Lakehead University was the opportunity to meet with the students in the classroom on a regular basis, so much so, that for ten years after officially retiring he continued to teach his two international seminar courses. For 11 years commencing in 1995 Naysmith was also Founding Chair of Ontario’s Forestry Futures Trust Committee. During that time the Trust funded more than $100 million worth of forest renewal programs and independent forest audits on Crown forests across Ontario. Dr. Naysmith has presented conference papers and guest lectures in and out of Canada including Argentina, Ireland, Ghana, Japan, Nepal and the United States. In 1989 he was appointed Canada’s representative on the Advisory Committee on Forestry Education. While serving in that role he was the Canadian Member at the Committee’s 15th Session held in Istanbul, Turkey and the 16th Session held in Bangkok, Thailand. In 1998 Naysmith co-chaired a 17-country workshop in Tokyo hosted by the Government of Japan and the International Model Forest Network Secretariat. A Registered Professional Forester, Naysmith has a forestry degree from the University of New Brunswick and graduate degrees from the University of British Columbia and Harvard University. In 1967 Harvard named him a Charles Bullard Fellow in Forest Science. He has also received international, national, provincial and professional association awards. Naysmith and his wife, Etoile McNulty Robinson, have three children and seven grandchildren. Since the 1960s, a cherished feature of the Naysmith family life has been their forest and lake place in Quebec’s Laurentian Mountains. The Honourable William G. Davis, P.C., C.C., Q.C. DOCTOR OF LAWS Mr. William Davis is a proud Canadian and a dedicated federalist who has been avidly involved in the Canadian political scene since 1959. Born in Brampton, Mr. Davis attended the University of Toronto and Osgoode Hall and was called to the Bar in 1955. Mr. Davis was a Member of the Ontario Legislature from 1959-1985. In 1962 he was appointed Education Minister and added the University Affairs portfolio two years later. Under his guidance, Ontario’s education system was drastically reformatted. Of his many accomplishments in the field of education, Mr. Davis is most recognized for his role in the creation of Ontario’s Institute for Studies in Education and the establishment of Ontario’s widely respected community college system. From 1971-1985, Mr. Davis served as the . As Premier, Mr. Davis combined a businesslike approach to the running of government with a sensitive understanding of the needs and aspirations of the people it serves. He immediately implemented his own style, utilizing the administrative skills and thorough knowledge of government acquired during 12 years as a Minister of the Crown. Mr. Davis initiated a complete reorganization of government structures. During this time social services were greatly expanded while the process of government was simultaneously reorganized and streamlined. Technological initiatives, the key to Ontario’s future prosperity, were fostered. Mr. Davis also played an important role in negotiating Canada’s constitutional accord. His statesmanlike approach did much to promote the spirit of compromise that made the agreement possible. On April 17, 1982, Mr. Davis was sworn in as a member of the Privy Council by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Second. In further recognition of this accomplishment, on April 9, 1986 the Governor General of Canada, the Right Honourable Jeanne Sauve, invested Mr. Davis as a Companion of the Order of Canada at a ceremony held at Government House in Ottawa. From 1985 to 1986, Mr. Davis served as Canada’s Special Envoy on Acid Rain. This assignment was carried out at the request of the , and Mr. Davis worked alongside his American counterpart to produce a progressive report on this key environmental issue. Mr. Davis was also honoured with an investiture in The Order of Ontario. Presented by Lieutenant-Governor Lincoln Alexander at a ceremony in the Legislature of Ontario on May 6, 1987, he was among the first of 20 citizens to be honoured with this induction. In addition to these noteworthy accomplishments, Mr. Davis acts as the Director to seven major corporations. From 1985 to 2010, Mr. Davis was Counsel at Torys LLP in Toronto. He is also a member of the Governing Council of the University of Toronto. Mr. Davis has been awarded Honorary Degrees by eight Ontario Universities, as well as the Yeshiva University of New York, the National University of Ireland and the University of Tel Aviv. 2007 was the 40th anniversary of the Community College system in Ontario. In recognition of his role in the creation of this system, Mr. Davis’ also received Honorary Diplomas from , and . Ronald Keith O’Dor DOCTOR OF SCIENCE “The oceans have been healthy for four billion years. But if we want them to stay the way they are, we have to act,” says marine biologist Ronald Keith O’Dor in his Canadian Geographic profile as the 2009 Environmental Scientist of the Year. “I just want to feel comfortable that I have done my best to make the world a better place for my children and grandchildren.” Just over a year after he earned this title, the international Census of Marine Life, of which O’Dor was the Senior Scientist, reported the findings of its decade-long work in assessing the diversity, distribution and abundance of marine life. The Census, which brings together the work of 2,700 scientists in over 80 nations, has aggregated more than 30 million species-level records obtained before and outside the Census as well as adding millions more from its own field work, including 1,200 newly-discovered and described species and another 5,000 that await formal description. “Although people have begun to recognize that biodiversity, particularly genetic diversity, is a valuable resource,” says Dr. O’Dor, “the efforts to preserve it in the oceans lag far behind those for preservation of biodiversity on land.” The Census, he says, “has not eliminated the unknown or counted every fish, but it has dramatically reduced the unknowable and created what we now refer to as ‘transparent oceans.’” . One important legacy of the Census is its creation of the Ocean Biogeographic Information System, the world’s largest online repository of geo-referenced data that nations can use to develop national and regional assessments and to meet their obligations to the Convention on Biological Diversity and other international commitments. Although Ronald O’Dor was born in 1944 in the land-locked town of Liberty, Missouri, his fascination with ocean life began at age 17 when he visited relatives in California. He first studied Chemistry and Engineering at El Camino College in Los Angeles, then Biochemistry at the University of California, Berkeley. His PhD research in medical physiology at the University of British Columbia, which led to the discovery of the treatment of osteoporosis using salmon calcitonin, brought him closer to his interest in marine biology. O’Dor pursued post-doctoral research at Cambridge University and Stazione Zoologica in Naples and focused on the characterization of the octopus gonadotropin and its role in cephalopod reproductive biology. In 1973, Dr. O’Dor became assistant professor of Biology at in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and later Chair of the Department. He led the research team that developed the technology for radio-acoustic positioning telemetry (RAPT), allowing them to continuously record animal movements under the sea. RAPT helps reconstruct pictorial maps of the habitats animals use and, over time, illustrates how environmental changes affect habitats. His successful application of this technology in his research of the cephalopod led to his role in the Census of Marine Life. Dr. O’Dor has been a visiting scientist at Universities all over the world, is a frequent contributor to scientific journals, and continues to be involved in Dalhousie University’s Ocean Tracking Network to monitor marine animals from 10 gram salmon to 100 tonne whales.
