West Felton Walkers Free Footnote delivery Who needs to travel to New to see the Autumn colours when we service have been blessed with such a dazzling display as we have this Autumn. I from think you would agree this year the trees and shrubs have looked magnificent. The golden carpet under the trees on entering the village from Queens Head 9am-9pm is a sight to behold. The dry conditions have no doubt contributed to this bonanza which seems to have been widespread over Europe from Toulouse to Tobermoray. On our recent visit to see the part of our family that lives in Open daily Blagnac it was evident that they had been suffering from lack of rain by the Monday-Friday 7am-11pm condition of the lawn which looked more like a desert. We were planting shrubs with a pick axe ! Saturday and Sunday 8am-6pm We had a very enjoyable trip to a medieval town near the Pyranees called Tel. 01691 670292 or email: Mierpoint . They were hosting an apple festival with amazing full scale models of animals, a horse, a bull, even a stage coach covered in thousands of [email protected] apples that seemed to be tied on to the framework with elastic bands, quite or call in and see us at Cambrian impressive. The strange thing was we didn‘t see evidence of orchards en route to or from the town but they must have been somewhere in the region. Health Centre , Thomas Savin Road, Oswestry. Two of our group attended a one day walk leaders training course at the Shirehall early in the month which will now give us more holiday cover but perhaps more importantly flexibility within the group to enable those members that wish to take a more demanding route to do so providing the leaders are there. Details have yet to be ironed out.

The walk on the 3rd of the month was to Nesscliff and round the Cliffe. Nine of us enjoyed a beautifully warm sunny morning walking through the woodland footpaths to the Cliffe to enjoy the sandy soil underfoot striding through bracken and whin berries to enjoy the wonderful views of Shropshire to the Welsh hills resting on a strategically placed bench to catch our breath. There is always something new going on in the countryside if you take the time to look; seasons are always changing, as we returned to the car park we heard a pair of ravens calling to each other, at least that is what it sounded like, one of them had a really deep voice, it sounded quite weird and a bit spooky. J H Cleaning th On the 30 a group of Seven took a new route past Twyford farm across field Carpet and Upholstery Cleaning footpaths leading to the old Rednal station returning to the village via Sutton Natural Stone and Tile Cleaning hill. The first part of the route in the vicinity of the farm was very muddy and Sealing and Restoration quite hazardous underfoot, not one that we will be attempting during the winter Grout cleaning and re-colour months I think.

One of the things he did was to direct the planting of the great vine 15 Open-toed shoe (6) at Hampton Court in 1768 so it is now almost 250 years old. It is said to be the 17 Out of date (8) largest vine in the world with the longest rod 36m. The grape is the Black 18 Prepare for publication (4) Hamburg which is a superb sweet desert type and, somewhat amazingly, is 21 In this place (4) not only still available today but is probably the most widely grown indoor 22 Store of weapons (7) variety. Grapes are a choice fruit to eat (you don‘t have to peel them) and the 23 One not given to travel (4-2-4) best fruit for making good wine. Why not grow one, or several?

Down In our neck of the woods, growing a good desert grape outdoors is not really 1 Something worth having (5) possible so, if you have no glasshouse space, it is better to concentrate on 2 Karate blow (4) wine (or juice). A lot of people think that growing grapes is very difficult, in fact 3 Sully (6) it is very straightforward but you have to know how and it has to be admitted 4 Bedtime drink (8) that some regular pruning is essential. There are several methods of training 5 Embellished (7) vines but I will briefly describe a simple approach. You start off by planting a 6 Ragged figure (9) single stem and apply what is called the extension system. This simply means 9 Informal conversation (5,4) choosing how many main stems you want (for most of us this will be one in a 12 Pit (8) glasshouse) and year by year let them extend in length until you have filled the November‘s Cross Word Solutions 14 Esteem (7) space. You limit the side shoots to about one every 30 cm and in year 2 can 16 Finally (2,4) allow a couple of bunches of grapes. In the growing season, the side shoots 19 Duffer (5) are stopped 2 leaves past the first embryo bunch of grapes and, on a 20 Norway's capital (4) continuous basis all summer, the secondary shoots are removed completely. In the autumn, all the side shoots are cut back to one bud and you start again next year.

Outdoor grapes are preferably grown against a wall in our northern clime applying the same basic principle as for the glasshouse. The difference is that the outdoor vines are grown as cordons so that the first side shoots are trained on wires horizontally to form the permanent structure (as opposed to one or more main rods). Then, secondary shoots are those that bear the fruit and are cut back to one bud every autumn. There is plenty of more detailed advice on the internet.

We grow Black Hamburgh indoors and Phoinix outdoors. Apart from the annual cutting back of the fruiting shoots and pinching out the secondary shoots from these, there is not a great deal of care needed. Our indoor one doesn‘t get fed (heaven knows where the roots are) and the outdoor ones get a handful of Growmore. As grapes ripen, it is a good idea to prune leaves to maximise air and sun.
