  • The War of Souls Volume Two
® THE WAR OF SOULS VOLUME TWO Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman 1 An Accounting Nightmare o rham Ta rgonne was having a bad day. His accounts would not balance. The diffe r ence in the totals was paltry, a matter of a few steel. He could have made it up with the sp a r e change from his purse. But Tar gonne liked things to be neat, ord e r l y . His rows of figures should add up. There should be no d i s c repancies. Yet here he was. He had the various accounts of moneys coming into the knights’ coffers. He had the various accounts of moneys going out of the knights’ coffers, and there was a diff e rence of twenty-seven steel, fourteen silver, and five coppers. Had it been a major sum, he might have suspected embezzlement. As it was, he was certain that some minor func- tionary had made a simple miscalculation. Tar gonne would have to go back through all the accounts, redo the calculations, track down the error . An uninformed observer, seeing Morham Targonne seated at his desk, his fingers black with ink, his head bent over his accounts, would have said that he was looking on a loyal and dedicated clerk. The uninformed observer would have been wrong. Morham Targonne was the leader of the Dark Knights of 1 DRAGONLANCE The War of Souls Neraka and there b y, since the Dark Knights were in control of several major nations on the continent of Ansalon, Morham Tar- gonne held the power of life and death over millions of people.

  • Defining the Divine: an Exploration of the Relationships Between Gods and Mortals in Fantasy Literature by Jacqueline Kauza a Th
Defining the Divine: An Exploration of the Relationships Between Gods and Mortals in Fantasy Literature by Jacqueline Kauza A thesis presented for the B.A. degree with Honors in The Department of English University of Michigan Spring 2011 © 2011 Jacqueline Kauza To Mom, who always knows just what to say to encourage me and who is never too busy for a little philosophical, theological discussion. And to Dad, who has always told me, “Do your best, and be yourself.” Dad, here’s my best, and, in writing it, I have indeed stayed true to myself. Acknowledgments First and foremost, I would like to thank my thesis advisor and one of the most brilliant professors with whom I have ever had the honor and pleasure of working, Eric Rabkin, PhD. He keeps both a library and a dictionary stored in his brain, offers advice with honesty and tact, and assisted with everything from my overall argument to the minutiae of grammar. Professor Rabkin constantly encouraged me to think deeper, to complicate my ideas. When I would fixate too much on the god-characters and their mortals, he would remind that another mortal was important, too— the reader. Without his expertise and input, this thesis could not have been written. I would also like to thank Catherine Sanok and my Honors cohort. My fellow students were always great sources of inspiration and great sources of assistance, proofreading numerous drafts and helping me make my ideas accessible to readers who had not spent the past months immersed completely in the fantasy genre. Additionally, I wish to thank Karen Alexander, who, many years ago, encouraged my love of reading and my love of fantasy literature.

  • Master's Thesis
MASTER'S THESIS The Teaching of Magic and Other Subjects Arcane in Children´s Fantasy An analysis of schools and their values in J.K. Rowling´s Harry Potter and the Philosopher´s Stone; Tamora Pierce´s Alanna: the First Adventure; and The Earthsea Trilogy, by Ursula K. Le Guin. Joel Monssen Nordström Master of Arts (60 credits) Master of Arts in English Literature Luleå University of Technology Department of Arts, Communication and Education Abstract This essay analyses how magic is presented and how the schools teaching it are structured in three series of children's fantasy literature: J.K. Rowling´s Harry Potter and the Philosopher´s Stone; Tamora Pierce´s Lioness Quartet books; and The Earthsea Trilogy, by Ursula K. Le Guin. It focuses on the boarding school story genre and uses Foucault´s view of institutions and discipline to analyse how the child characters are taught, and what they are taught at the schools, as well how the books themselves relate to these teachings and methods. The analysis shows that magic is treated in a similar fashion in all series: that it is seen as just another form of power, which is intrinsically neither good nor bad. Rather, that distinction lies in how it is used. In all the books the schools teach the child characters similar values: duty, honesty, friendship and courage are common themes, but above all the books stress responsibility, and the need to use magic responsibly. Also, as is the norm in boarding school stories, the schools themselves are portrayed in a positive manner, and the students submit to the institutions and their values.
