It argues that women in these texts function as an “absent presence,” by which I mean that they are a convention of the patriarchal gangster landscape and often with little import while at the same time they cultivate resistant strategies from within this backgrounded positioning. Whereas previous scholarly work on gangster texts has identified how women are characterized as stereotypes, this dissertation argues that women characters frequently employ the marginal positions to which they are relegated for empowering effect. This dissertation begins by surveying existing gangster scholarship. There is a preoccupation with male characters in this work, as is the case in most gangster texts themselves. -

Ann Harding ~ 22 Films Born in Texas in 1902 and forsaking commerce for the theatre in 1921, by 1929 Ann Harding was an established Broadway lead. In that year she signed with Pathé (soon part of RKO) and through the mid-'30s starred in a series of soap operas, most typically as suffering heroines forced to make noble sacrifices for the men they love. With her ash-blonde hair usually swept back into a bun, classical makeup-free good looks and deep, beautifully modulated voice, the patrician Harding brought a gentle, serene strength to such worthy star vehicles as When Ladies Meet (1933) and The Life Of Vergie Winters (1934) but fared less well in more faltering efforts such as Devotion (1931) and Enchanted April (1935). Ideal for the philosophical sophistication of playwright Phillip Barry, Harding shone in fine adaptations of two of his most successful comedy- drama talkfests: Holiday (1930), for which she received a Best Actress Oscar nomination and The Animal Kingdom (1932). She made two of her strongest films late in her reign as a star: the haunting almost surreal love story Peter Ibbetson (1935, opposite Gary Cooper) and the taut suspense melodrama Love From A Stranger (1937, with Basil Rathbone). She continued to appear on film, stage and television until 1965 and died in 1981, aged 79. With her favourite leading man, Leslie Howard Moira Finnie talks to Ann Harding biographer Scott O'Brien "Looking at Harding," wrote film historian Mick LaSalle in his book Complicated Women "is like looking into clear, deep water. The Museum of Modern Art For Immediate Release November 1992 MICHAEL CURTIZ: FROM HUNGARY TO HOLLYWOOD November 27, 1992 - January 23, 1993 A survey of more than fifty films by Michael Curtiz (1888-1962), one of cinema's most prolific directors from the studio era, opens on November 27, 1992, at The Museum of Modern Art. As Warner Bros, house director in the 1930s and 1940s, Curtiz symbolizes the crispness and energy that distinguished the Warners' style. On view through January 23, 1993, MICHAEL CURTIZ: FROM HUNGARY TO HOLLYWOOD explores the consistent quality and versatility of the filmmaker's work. The Hungarian-born Curtiz mastered virtually all genres and, during his twenty-seven-year career at Warner Bros., made every type of film from westerns and musicals to social dramas and comedies. A strong director of actors, he made stars of such disparate types as Errol Flynn, John Garfield, and Doris Day, and earned an Academy Award and a renewed career for Joan Crawford in Mildred Pierce (1945). Many of his films were popular critical and financial successes. Scarface, Gatsby, and the American Dream
Scarface, The Great Gatsby, and the American Dream According to Howard Hawks, Ben Hecht, and others involved in Scarface (1932), the film's screenplay was a unique creation that owes little to the novel Scarface (1930), by Armitage Trail. Director Hawks claimed he based the film on his own knowledge of gangsters, particularly Al Capone (45-47). Although co-writers W. R. Burnett and John Lee Mahin credit Heeht with a complete transformation of an earlier version ofthe screenplay (Burnett 60; Mahin 246-47), the film does not depart as significantly from the novel as Hawks, Hecht, and others assert. The primary alterations in the novel take the form of compressing the narrative, eliminating most ofthe political commentary to appease eensors, and introducing less controversial but more stereotypical commentary about the centra! character's pursuit of material success. Hecht seems to have provided the screenplay with tamer thematic material about the American Dream, derived in part from F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby {\925). Based on the career of A l Capone, Trail's Scarface depicts the rise ofthe gangster Tony Guarino. For the sake of compression, the screenwriters excised most ofthe first six chapters ofthe book. In those chapters, Tony takes on a stripper as his mistress, kills her gangster lover, earns medals for bravery in World War 1, murders his mistress and her new lover, and adopts a different identity to avoid prosecution. The screenwriters did retain Tony"s rise to power under the command of Johnny Lovo. including the murder of a rival crime boss; Johnny's efforts to maintain peace with the North Side gang; the North Side's attack with machine guns; Tony's successful counterattack; Tony's takeover of Johnny's gang; Tony's murder of his brother-in- law; and Tony's death as a consequence of that murder As he rises, Tony becomes involved with an attractive woman affiliated with the mob. -

MoMA PRESENTS RETROSPECTIVE OF THE “BLONDE BOMBSHELL” JOAN BLONDELL Films in Series Spanning 50-Year Career Include A Tree Grows in Brooklyn and Blondie Johnson, Concluding with John Cassavetes’s Opening Night Joan Blondell: The Bombshell from Ninety-first Street December 19, 2007–January 1, 2008 The Roy and Niuta Titus Theaters NEW YORK, December 3, 2007—The Museum of Modern Art presents an exhibition of 13 films starring Joan Blondell, one of Hollywood’s most versatile actresses, whose long and varied career spanned the 1930s through the 1970s. Joan Blondell: The Bombshell from Ninety-first Street captures the metamorphosis of the Manhattan-born actress from a young “blonde bombshell” to more mature roles while illustrating her accomplished—yet largely underappreciated—talents, such as perfect timing and versatility in the roles she played. Despite never landing the starring roles like contemporaries Barbara Stanwyck and Joan Crawford, Blondell (American, 1906–79) was illustrative of the strengths of the Hollywood studio system, carving out a memorable career over the course of half a century. The exhibition is presented December 19, 2007–January 1, 2008, in The Roy and Niuta Titus Theaters, and includes Blondell’s films with directors Elia Kazan, Edmund Goulding, and John Cassavetes. Screenings of six films will be introduced by Matthew Kennedy, author of the new biography Joan Blondell: A Life Between Takes (University Press of Mississippi, 2007): A Tree Grows in Brooklyn and Blonde Crazy (December 19), Blondie Johnson and Nightmare Alley (December 20), and Footlight Parade and The Blue Veil (December 21). Several of the prints shown in this exhibition are new and represent rare films that have long been unavailable on video or DVD. -
