10 October 2006

His Excellency Mr. Kofi Annan Secretary General of the United Nations United Nations New York, New York 10017-3515

Dear Mr Secretary General:

It is with great pleasure that we are writing to update you on the planned "Youth United Against Malaria Concert" that will take placef during the first ever United Nations Global Youth Leadership "Summit" organized by the United Nations New York Office of Sport for Development and Peace (UNOSDP) in New York, 29-31 October 2006.

This concert adds special significance to an event where youth leaders from 192 Member States of the United Nations will gather to exchange perspectives" on how they can accelerate the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals, using the convening power of sport and culture as entry points.

We are delighted that you continue to lend your unwavering support to an initiative which has generated so much attention and awareness - first in Dakar, then Geneva, and which will now raise the roof in New York - home to the United Nations.

_ UNOSDP, the World Culture Open, Roll Back Malaria Partnership Secretariat, the Office of the United Nations in Geneva, John Hopkins University Centre for Communication Programs and Youssou N'Dour's team in Dakar are working intensively to ensure the best possible preparation of a concert which will help to empower young people from all over the world to take action and lead the fight against malaria in their own countries.

Roll Back Malaria Special Envoy Youssou N'Dour, with his own unique creative vision, is leading a dynamic line-up of international artists including South 's "Princess of Africa" and UNICEF Regional Malaria Spokesperson Yvonne Chaka Chaka, the extremely popular Angelique Kidjo from Benin who is also a UNICEF Ambassador, "King of RaT" Cheb Khaled, and Karina, an exciting new artist from the USA who, at 16 years of age, truly represents today's youth. We expect that additional artists will confirm their participation in the next few days adding a diversity of different cultures and styles which will enrich this event.

In order to stimulate the engagement of our future youth leaders a malaria advocacy brochure, in . two languages has been produced and will be distributed at the concert and during the malaria : session at the Summit. The brochure will also be included among a range of materials, designed. for a dynamic new "Youth United Against Malaria Concert" web site (http://www.rollbackmalaria.org/extra/unitedagainstmalaria) which will be launched on 23 October

We expect the messages contained in these materials to inspire youth delegates and give them the necessary tools to raise awareness and stimulate strong advocacy activities.

Media interest in this event is growing and we plan to profile both the delegates' experience and highlight the commitment of many of the participating artists in the fight against malaria. A number of press events are being proposed to maximize the coverage of the concert and enhance the Summit's focus on engaging future leaders to work towards attaining the Millennium Development Goals.

We look forward to a highly successful event and hope you will agree that this initiative once again reflects what can be achieved when dedicated bodies and individuals work together in partnership.

Respectfully yours,

Dr Awa Marie Coil-Seek Djibril Diallo Ph.D. (Lond) Dr. Grace Chung Lee Executive Secretary Director Secretary-General United Nations World Culture Open Roll Back Malaria Partnership New York Office of Sport for Development and Peace

Provisional Programme

Introduction

Young people represent one-fourth of the world's six billion people, of which 86 percent live in developing countries.

Estimates indicate that one in five youth live on less than $ 1 a day and that as many as 45% live on less than $2 per day. These statistics take on an added significance when they are considered against the many dimensions of poverty, as reflected in the Millennium Development Goals: hunger and malnutrition; lack of access to education and other basic services; high exposure to diseases; unsafe environment and lack of participation in decision-making.

Although only one of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) specifically mentions youth, a closer look will reveal the fact that young people are at the core of every goal.

The aim of the MDGs is to create a better future for today's young people, as illustrated in the agenda below. Youth recounting their experience and work towards achieving the MDGs by 2015 will be the main focus throughout the Summit, using sport and culture as entry points. SATURDAY, 28 OCTOBER 2006
