PRIORITY DLF: Global Youth Leadership Summit I received today the attached letter from Djibril Diallo which had been passed AB by the SG "for appropriate action." As we discussed, I would like you to be the focal point for liaising with Djibril re: the SG's participation in this project. Last week I passed you an earlier letter from Djibril (he has attached a copy to his latest letter to the SG) and asked that you prepare a note to the SG for AB's signature asking how much time he wished to devote to this meeting and setting out Djibril's proposals. I would suggest you discuss the proposed elements with him and get additional details. You might also want to get a sense of which elements he considers most important, as I doubt the SG will be willing to do everything asked. I know the talking points and telephone notes have kept you very busy but would appreciate your preparing this note by COB tomorrow. Thanks. Estimates indicate that one in five youth live on less than $1 a day and that as many as 45% live on less than $2 per day. These statistics take on an added significance when they are considered against the many dimensions of poverty, as reflected in the Millennium Development Goals: hunger and malnutrition; lack of access to education and other basic services; high exposure to diseases; unsafe environment and lack of participation in decision-making. Although only one of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) specifically mentions youth, a closer look will reveal the fact that young people are at the core of every goal. The aim of the MDGs is to create a better future for today's young people, as illustrated in the agenda below. Youth recounting their experience and work towards achieving the MDGs by 2015 will be the main focus throughout the Summit, through sport and culture. Blatter and UEFA President Michel Platini, accompanied by a delegation from each governing body, met in Zurich today Thursday 15 February 2007 to discuss a number of urgent matters. The meeting focused on problems regarding players’ agents, insurance for clubs and the players who they release for international duty and the coordinated international match calendar. With regard to the latter issue, it was noted that, in December 2007, there will be a collision due to scheduled fixtures in the UEFA Champions League and the FIFA Club World Cup. The two governing bodies will now examine two possible solutions to this problem as soon as possible. At the same time, the two bodies agreed to create a committee, composed of representatives of all of football’s stakeholders (confederations, associations, leagues, clubs and players’ representatives), in order to harmonise the coordinated international match calendar at world level up to 2014. Joseph S. Blatter and Michel Platini both recognised the importance of this meeting. “This meeting came at a vital moment, not only for European football, but also for world football. FIFA cannot implement its sports policies without direct cooperation and collaboration with UEFA. We may not always have the same ideas, but we will have the same approach,” stressed Blatter. Michael Platini, meanwhile, underlined the “unity of vision” shared by FIFA and UEFA, who “need to work together to promote the true values of football and develop our sport together.

    Problem Statement Two Trends, Each Propitious on Its Own, Could Spell

    Problem Statement Two trends, each propitious on its own, could spell disaster for the world since they are concurrent. First, advances in automation, artificial intelligence and machine learning will boost productivity but these new technologies can also bring a job-eliminating tsunami. Second, the recent youth bulge has swelled populations under 15 to 41% in Africa and 26% in the world, while world population is projected to grow to nearly 10 billion by 2050. An energetic workforce will boost productivity but what happens when the young have no jobs? The unemployed millions may try to migrate northwards—from Africa to Europe and from Central and South America to the United States and Canada, causing new social disruptions and revival of nativism of old. Violence is already getting worse across the world and its economic impact reached $14.8 trillion, according to the 2018 Global Peace Index report. In the United States, more than 215,000 children have experienced gun violence at school since the Columbine High massacre in 1999, as reported by the Washington Post. Unlike the 20th century when progress was chiefly intelligence-based, prosperity this century is primarily creativity-driven. Creativity kindles ideation and invention, which fuels new business development so the young entrepreneurs can gainfully employ themselves as well as others. Essential though for collaborative innovation and social harmony is empathy because it breeds mutuality and makes compromise tolerable. Creativity and empathy are hence salient human attributes. Their development, however, must start with schoolchildren—before the well-documented “4th-grade slump” in their creativity gains a foothold or ingrained prejudices discolor their “mirror neurons” responsible for empathy.

Le calendrier était trop serré: Michel Platini a logiquement renoncé jeudi à maintenir sa candidature à la présidence de la Fifa, faute de temps suffisant pour épuiser les différents recours face à sa suspension de 8 ans de toute activité liée au foot. Dans un entretien exclusif paru hier dans L'Équipe, le Français de 60 ans explique : “Je ne me présenterai pas à la présidence de la Fifa. Je retire ma candidature. Je ne peux plus, je n'ai plus le temps ni les moyens d'aller voir les électeurs, de rencontrer les gens, de me battre avec les autres”. L'élection est certes prévue le 26 février, à Zurich, mais les candidatures devaient être enregistrées le 26 janvier, au plus tard. Or, à la date de jeudi (le 7 janvier), le président (suspendu) de l'UEFA n'avait toujours pas reçu les motivations de la sanction prononcée le 21 décembre par la justice interne de la Fifa pour ce fameux paiement controversé de 1,8 million d'euros reçu de Sepp Blatter, le président de la Fifa, également suspendu 8 ans. À partir de la réception de ces motivations, l'ex-triple Ballon d'Or pourra enclencher les différents recours à sa disposition: la chambre d'appel de la Fifa, puis le Tribunal arbitral du sport (TAS) de Lausanne, la juridiction sportive suprême. “Aujourd'hui, je dois m'occuper de tous les recours, suivre les procédures. En plus des motivations qui doivent encore être rendues, il y aura, derrière, le TAS, puis la commission (électorale de la Fifa) présidée par Domenico Scala qui a dit (dans le Financial Times cet automne) que j'avais falsifié les comptes.

Abstract Folk sports are the countertype of modern sports: invented traditions, bolstered by tangible ritual and intangible myth, played by the common folk in order to express a romantic ethnic identity. Like other cultural forms, traditional sports and games around the world are becoming marginalized in the face of modernization and globalization. In 2003, UNESCO ratified the Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in an attempt to counter such trends of cultural homogenization. As elements of intangible cultural heritage, folk sports now fall under the auspices of UNESCO safeguarding policies.

Pursuant to the legal principle of tempus regit actum or non-retroactivity, procedural matters are governed by the regulations in force at the time of the procedural act in question. The prohibition against retroactivity is a fundamental principle of Swiss law and forms part of international public policy (ordre public). An exception in this respect may however be if more recent regulations than the one in force at the time of the violation are more favourable to the accused (lex mitior). 2. According to article 4(7) of the IBA Rules on the Taking of Evidence in International Arbitration, “[i]f a witness whose appearance has been requested pursuant to Article 8.1 fails without a valid reason to appear for testimony at an Evidentiary Hearing, the Arbitral Tribunal shall disregard any Witness Statement related to that Evidentiary Hearing by that witness unless, in exceptional circumstances, the Arbitral Tribunal decides otherwise”.

I ABSTRACT THE (R) EVOLUTION OF LUSOPHONE MUSICS IN THE CITY OF LISBON Bart Paul VANSPAUWEN KEYWORDS: lusofonia , migration, cultural politics, urban ethnomusicology, identity formation, postcolonialism, cross-cultural processes, cosmopolitanism, globalization. This dissertation explores the concept of lusofonia . Departing from a discursive analysis of the concept, I will address the ways through which it figures in the cultural policies of the Municipality of Lisbon and of governmental institutions, and how it informs their actions. I will also explore the role of voluntary associations such as Sons da Lusofonia that evoke lusofonia as part of their goals.
