Le calendrier était trop serré: Michel Platini a logiquement renoncé jeudi à maintenir sa candidature à la présidence de la Fifa, faute de temps suffisant pour épuiser les différents recours face à sa suspension de 8 ans de toute activité liée au foot. Dans un entretien exclusif paru hier dans L'Équipe, le Français de 60 ans explique : “Je ne me présenterai pas à la présidence de la Fifa. Je retire ma candidature. Je ne peux plus, je n'ai plus le temps ni les moyens d'aller voir les électeurs, de rencontrer les gens, de me battre avec les autres”. L'élection est certes prévue le 26 février, à Zurich, mais les candidatures devaient être enregistrées le 26 janvier, au plus tard. Or, à la date de jeudi (le 7 janvier), le président (suspendu) de l'UEFA n'avait toujours pas reçu les motivations de la sanction prononcée le 21 décembre par la justice interne de la Fifa pour ce fameux paiement controversé de 1,8 million d'euros reçu de Sepp Blatter, le président de la Fifa, également suspendu 8 ans. À partir de la réception de ces motivations, l'ex-triple Ballon d'Or pourra enclencher les différents recours à sa disposition: la chambre d'appel de la Fifa, puis le Tribunal arbitral du sport (TAS) de Lausanne, la juridiction sportive suprême. “Aujourd'hui, je dois m'occuper de tous les recours, suivre les procédures. En plus des motivations qui doivent encore être rendues, il y aura, derrière, le TAS, puis la commission (électorale de la Fifa) présidée par Domenico Scala qui a dit (dans le Financial Times cet automne) que j'avais falsifié les comptes. Ça ne se présente pas très bien”, reconnaît l'ancien joueur vedette de la Juventus dans L'Équipe, qui a diffusé des extraits de l'entretien jeudi soir sur son site internet. Au cœur du dossier, il y a donc ce fameux versement de 1,8 million d’euros en 2011, pour un travail de conseiller de Blatter achevé en 2002. Pour Platini, il s'agit d'un reliquat de salaire payé sur la base d'un contrat oral. La justice interne de la Fifa y a vu elle un “conflit d'intérêt”, “abus de position” et “gestion déloyale”. Lorsqu'il s'était déclaré le 29 juillet, l'ancien meneur des Bleus faisait figure d'ultra-favori pour succéder à Blatter. Il n'y a plus désormais que cinq candidats encore en lice: l'ancien membre de la Fifa Jérôme Champagne, le secrétaire général de l'UEFA Gianni Infantino, l'homme d'affaires sud-africain Tokyo Sexwale, le prince jordanien Ali et le président de la Confédération asiatique, cheick Salman Bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa. Ce dernier et Infantino font figure maintenant de favoris. Infantino était en effet le plan B de l'UEFA si son champion, Platini, était empêché de se présenter. Vifs regrets Les regrets sont vifs pour Platini, toujours compétiteur dans l'âme, comme il l'expose dans L'Équipe: “Comment remporter une élection quand on est empêché de faire campagne ? Je me suis battu comme je l'ai toujours fait dans ma vie, mais on ne m'a pas donné la possibilité de concourir ce coup-ci”. Au passage, Platini ne peut s'empêcher de refaire le décompte des voix promises: “Quand Blatter s'est retiré (le 2 juin, alors que la Fifa était cernée par les scandales de corruption à grande échelle, ndlr), j'ai reçu 150 soutiens déclarés (sur 209 votants, ndlr). Une centaine de lettres officielles de fédérations et une cinquantaine de promesses. Tout cela en deux jours”. Et il ne digère toujours pas, comme il l'avait déclaré à l'AFP, au lendemain de sa sanction: “Les gens de la commission d'éthique (de la Fifa) sont davantage impliqués dans une question de calendrier -pour m'empêcher de me présenter à temps pour l'élection à la présidence de la Fifa- et dans la médisance que dans l'éthique. Ils ne sont pas éthiques, ils sont pathétiques”. L'important pour lui est maintenant de blanchir son nom de toutes les accusations, même s'il sait que des traces resteront, comme il l'avait souligné le 22 décembre auprès de l'AFP: “Quoi qu'il advienne mon image aura été écornée, j'en aurais pris plein la gueule. The two governing bodies will now examine two possible solutions to this problem as soon as possible.     New York, Paris, Tokyo, Frankfurt, Durban, Rio and St. Petersburg… The preliminary competition for the FIFA World Cup™ goes back more than 80 years. The actual draw however has gone from an item on the agenda of a meeting of the FIFA organising committee to a huge professionally organised event. These days the draw may be a glitzy, lavishly produced event held in such impressive surroundings, followed by people all around on the world on TV and the internet, but this is a relatively recent development. By contrast, the draw for the preliminary competition of the 1970 FIFA World Cup™ in Mexico, less than half a century ago, constituted nothing more than an item on the agenda of a regular meeting of the FIFA organising committee in the Moroccan city of Casablanca in 1968. It must therefore have seemed revolutionary when the German organisers of the 1974 tournament decided to broadcast the draw for the subsequent qualifying competition live from TV studios in Dusseldorf in July 1971. The pioneering step towards creating a truly global event was made, perhaps unsurprisingly, by the Americans, who held the Preliminary Draw for the 1994 FIFA World Cup™ at New York’s magnificent Madison Square Garden in 1991. This marked the start of a new era for something that until then had been considered nothing more than a mundane administrative matter. Since then New York, Paris, Tokyo, Frankfurt, Durban and Rio de Janeiro have hosted the draw – and this year St. Petersburg’s Konstantin Palace will join this illustrious group. I have put forth a specific agenda, always conscious of transparency and proximity. It is in this same spirit that I offer my 6th monthly newsletter with all of my proposals laid out concretely and in detail. In my view, and as I've written and said many times, we must continue and further improve what has been done well under the mandates of Presidents Havelange and Blatter: implement development programs, organize FIFA competitions on every continent, and take the correct sports policy decisions (e.g. the exclusion of South Africa because of apartheid in 1976). But we must do more. We must do better. Above all, we must do it differently. The world has changed, as has football, and the methods of modern governance. I do not claim to be right about everything, or propose today a solution to each of the prob- lems in the football of today and tomorrow. But I wish to stimulate the debate and lead it up to the 29th of May 2015 for the sake of FIFA and football.
