Despite moving with the times, they are, however, no longer in the best position to sort out for themselves the many problems that confront them. Corruption, money laundering, match-fixing, misplaced government interven- tion, legal disputes of various sorts, and so on, can, indeed, only be dealt with effectively if authority is clearly defined and if the status and independence of football’s governing bodies is recognised by law and they are provided with the necessary means. The Independent European Sport Review initiated by the sports ministers of the EU’s five key member states in cooperation with UEFA and FIFA is an important step in this direction. Its concludes in favour of sport being accorded a special, independent status and supports the European sport model.

I’ve heard bells go, and barmen saying “Time, gentlemen and ladies,” but not precisely “Hurry up please it’s time” – a line in a poem by T.S. Eliot, “The Wasteland.” The question which lingers in the poem is whether time means anything to us. “The days are getting shorter.” “This year has rushed past.” “They’re growing up before our eyes.” “You blink and you miss it.” “I’ll be glad when this year is over.” All these sorts of phrases tumble out, but T. S. Eliot was asking, how might we better measure out our days ? What might we use our time for ? In one perspective we are but an indistinguishable flash against a backdrop of almost unimaginable billions of years. In another, however, the perspective which we work with is this hour or this day – and if we stop to think about it, what are we doing with this time that is ours ? I don’t want to plunge anyone into despair – though T.S. Eliot’s poem, written in 1922, was not full of hope – but rather to reflect that every new day is a gift to us ! That requires a bit of directed work on our part. Not only can we get up on the wrong side of the bed, so to speak, but we do allow ourselves sometimes to go through days, even months and years, rather more full of complaints and cynicism and dark thoughts than with thankfulness in our hearts.

    Media Release Date: 15/02/2007 Communiqué aux médias No. 021 Medien-Mitteilung FIFA and UEFA address various urgent matters Coordination meeting FIFA President Joseph S. Blatter and UEFA President Michel Platini, accompanied by a delegation from each governing body, met in Zurich today Thursday 15 February 2007 to discuss a number of urgent matters. The meeting focused on problems regarding players’ agents, insurance for clubs and the players who they release for international duty and the coordinated international match calendar. With regard to the latter issue, it was noted that, in December 2007, there will be a collision due to scheduled fixtures in the UEFA Champions League and the FIFA Club World Cup. The two governing bodies will now examine two possible solutions to this problem as soon as possible. At the same time, the two bodies agreed to create a committee, composed of representatives of all of football’s stakeholders (confederations, associations, leagues, clubs and players’ representatives), in order to harmonise the coordinated international match calendar at world level up to 2014. Joseph S. Blatter and Michel Platini both recognised the importance of this meeting. “This meeting came at a vital moment, not only for European football, but also for world football. FIFA cannot implement its sports policies without direct cooperation and collaboration with UEFA. We may not always have the same ideas, but we will have the same approach,” stressed Blatter. Michael Platini, meanwhile, underlined the “unity of vision” shared by FIFA and UEFA, who “need to work together to promote the true values of football and develop our sport together.
