McMillan This is an annotated listing of all known Lee Morgan performances and all recordings (studio, live performances, broadcasts, telecasts, and interviews). The titles of studio recordings are given in bold and preceded by the name of the session leader. Recordings that appear to be lost are prefaced with a single asterisk in parentheses: (*). Recordings that have been commercially issued have two asterisks: **. Recordings that exist on tape but have never been commercially released have two asterisks in parentheses: (**). Any video footage known to survive is prefaced with three asterisks: ***. Video footage that was recorded but appears to now be lost is prefaced with three asterisks in parentheses: (***). On numerous occasions at Slugs’ Saloon in Manhattan, recording devices were set up on the stage and recorded Morgan’s performances without objection from the trumpeter. So far, none of these recordings have come to light. The information herein is a collation of data from newspapers, periodicals, published and personal interviews, discographies, programs, pamphlets, and other chronologies of other artists. Morgan’s performances were rarely advertised in most mainstream papers, so I drew valuable information primarily from African-American newspapers and jazz periodicals, which regularly carried ads for nightclubs and concerts. Entertainment and nightlife columnists in the black press, such as “Woody” McBride, Masco Young, Roland Marsh, Jesse Walker, Art Peters, and Del Shields, provided critical information, often verifying the personnel of an engagement or whether an advertised appearance occurred or was cancelled. Newspapers that I used include the Baltimore Afro-American (BAA), Cleveland Call & Post (C&P), Chicago Defender (CD), New Jersey Afro-American (NJAA), New York Amsterdam News (NYAN), Philadelphia Tribune (PT), and Pittsburgh Courier (PC). -

Problem Statement Two Trends, Each Propitious on Its Own, Could Spell
Problem Statement Two trends, each propitious on its own, could spell disaster for the world since they are concurrent. First, advances in automation, artificial intelligence and machine learning will boost productivity but these new technologies can also bring a job-eliminating tsunami. Second, the recent youth bulge has swelled populations under 15 to 41% in Africa and 26% in the world, while world population is projected to grow to nearly 10 billion by 2050. An energetic workforce will boost productivity but what happens when the young have no jobs? The unemployed millions may try to migrate northwards—from Africa to Europe and from Central and South America to the United States and Canada, causing new social disruptions and revival of nativism of old. Violence is already getting worse across the world and its economic impact reached $14.8 trillion, according to the 2018 Global Peace Index report. In the United States, more than 215,000 children have experienced gun violence at school since the Columbine High massacre in 1999, as reported by the Washington Post. Unlike the 20th century when progress was chiefly intelligence-based, prosperity this century is primarily creativity-driven. Creativity kindles ideation and invention, which fuels new business development so the young entrepreneurs can gainfully employ themselves as well as others. Essential though for collaborative innovation and social harmony is empathy because it breeds mutuality and makes compromise tolerable. Creativity and empathy are hence salient human attributes. Their development, however, must start with schoolchildren—before the well-documented “4th-grade slump” in their creativity gains a foothold or ingrained prejudices discolor their “mirror neurons” responsible for empathy. -

Y. about the reports of a fire at the Vogue Record Laboratories in Detroit, which is claimed to have destroyed masters of Art Mooney's first disks for that company. Apparently the feeling is that the first story was just an "out" for the company to evade promised release dates due to its inability to start production. Fire story, however, is on the level. Beside Mooney's masters, four sides by Charlie Shavers were destroyed. Shavers, trumpeter with Tommy Dorsey's band, had cut four jumpers with a small band.”1 TD – MCA SPAT LOOKS SETTLED “Tommy Dorsey's difficulties with Music Corp. of America, which led the leader several weeks ago to order MCA to stop booking his orchestra,, have been smoothed over. Dorsey and MCA execs had one or two meetings during the past week during which the differences were patched up. This was one dispute between the leader and MCA that was kept almost completely under cover. Its cause is still vague, although it is known that the friction was over money, not over the bookings. At any rate, Dorsey is again being submitted by the agency. He has nothing booked following the current Capitol theatre, N. Y. run and may go straight to the Coast after its completion. Incidentally, the, new contract between RCA Victor and Dorsey has been completed, It's a three-year deal, effective yesterday (Tues.) and replacing an old deal that still had more than a year to run. -

Abstract Folk sports are the countertype of modern sports: invented traditions, bolstered by tangible ritual and intangible myth, played by the common folk in order to express a romantic ethnic identity. Like other cultural forms, traditional sports and games around the world are becoming marginalized in the face of modernization and globalization. In 2003, UNESCO ratified the Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in an attempt to counter such trends of cultural homogenization. As elements of intangible cultural heritage, folk sports now fall under the auspices of UNESCO safeguarding policies. -
