MASONERÍA Y FASCISMO EN ITALIA: UNA RELACIÓN AMBIGUA (1922-1943) * Franco Savarino** Resumen. La formación de un régimen autoritario en Italia en 1922 (desde 1925 dictadura totalitaria), causó un enfrentamiento con la masonería. Inicialmente varias logias apoyaron la llegada al poder de Mussolini, y entre los fascistas había muchos masones. Sin embargo, existía una fuerte corriente antimasónica heredada del nacionalismo, que compartía personalmente el Jefe de los «camisas negras» y varios líderes importantes del nuevo régimen. La masonería fue primero prohibida en las filas del Partido y luego (1925) proscrita. Aquí me propongo indagar sobre los motivos que llevaron a este enfrentamiento y el significado de la oposición masonería-fascismo, frente al programa fascista de alianza con fuerzas liberales, acercamiento a la Iglesia católica y formación de una nueva «religión política» incompatible con la tradición masónica. -

Introduzione Tra il 9 settembre 1943 ed il 2 maggio 1945, date di inizio e fine dell’occupazione tedesca, furono deportati (o uccisi) dall’Italia poco più di 8.000 ebrei, su una popolazione (compresi gli stranieri), di circa 47.000,1 una percentuale paragonabile a quella degli altri paesi dell’Europa occidentale, anche se l’Italia Centro settentrionale fu occupata per molto meno tempo. A Roma, ad esempio, i circa 750 ebrei catturati dopo la razzia del 16 ottobre 1943, furono presi in un arco di tempo di 7 mesi e mezzo: un periodo relativamente breve che conferma l’efficacia degli organi della SiPo-SD nella ex capitale del Regno, nonostante l’esiguo numero delle forze a disposizione. Lo scopo di questo saggio è di descrivere la prassi della persecuzione, per capire quali siano stati i metodi che hanno portato a risultati così tragicamente soddisfacenti per i persecutori. -

FONDAZIONE GIORGIO CINI ISTITUTO ITALIANO ANTONIO VIVALDI MYRIAM ZERBI A FLOW OF MUSIC ANTONIO VIVALDI AT THE ORIGINS OF A REDISCOVERY VENEZIA FONDAZIONE GIORGIO CINI 2020 This book recounts the circumstances leading up to the foundation of the Istituto Italiano Antonio Vivaldi, established by Antonio Fanna and Angelo Ephrikian on 23 January 1947. It retraces the sometimes surprising adventures in postwar Italy that took the two protagonists from the dream of reviving the Red Priest’s music to the publication of his complete instrumental works. Using the le琀ers of the leading players, contemporary press reports and the personal memories of one of the founders, the author reconstructs the Istituto’s vicissitudes focusing especially on its first years, full of high emotions, enterprise and tenacity, in a war-torn country where a desire for renewal was everywhere palpable, through to 1978 when it was donated by Antonio Fanna to become part of the Fondazione Giorgio Cini in Venice. The story, which is enlivened with a copious apparatus of images and documents, unfolds through the personal testimonies of those involved: Angelo Ephrikian, who dreamed the original dream, Antonio Fanna, who laid the practical foundations of the Istituto and ran it for 昀fty years, Alfredo Gallinari the enabling benefactor, who until now has remained, by his own wish, anonymous, Francesco Continetto, the copyist, who transcribed over 昀ve hundred of Vivaldi’s manuscripts, Gian Francesco Malipiero, the Istituto’s artistic director and editor of the greater part of the Venetian composer’s music, and Eugenio Clause琀i the enlightened head of the music publisher Casa Ricordi. -

ADMISSION TO THE VITTORE BRANCA INTERNATIONAL CENTER FOR THE STUDY OF ITALIAN CULTURE W HAT IS THE VITTORE BRANCA CENTER? Named after a world-renowned Italianist and historic Secretary General of the Giorgio Cini Foundation, the Vittore Branca International Center for the Study of Italian Culture is a new international resource for humanities studies. It is also the principal means of implementing a strategy to open up and make good use of the great store of art and intellectual treasures housed in the Giorgio Cini Foundation on the Island of San Giorgio Maggiore in Venice. The Vittore Branca Center has been designed to host an international, interdisciplinary academic community. The residential facilities on the Island provide scholars and researchers with the opportunity to work and stay, often at length, in Venice at economically reasonable conditions in a setting conducive to reflection and intellectual exchanges. Since it opened in June 2010, the Center has not only been attended by expert scholars and young researchers from major institutions in various countries but also by writers and artists interested in studying Italian culture. Being a resident is an essential requisite for studying at the Vittore Branca Center. Only through the physical and emotional involvement of prolonged immersion in the context of San Giorgio Maggiore will it be possible to take full advantage of the countless opportunities offered. QUEST N. 7 - FOCUS Did the Germans Do It All? The Italian Shoah in International Historiography (1946-1986) by Michele Sarfatti Abstract This essay examines how the main historical writings in languages other than Italian (mostly English) published in the first forty years after the end of the war addressed the role played in the arrests and the deportations of the Jews in Italy by Mussolini’s Italian Social Republic (Repubblica Sociale Italiana) between the autumn of 1943 and the spring of 1945. It discusses what reconstruction of this single, salient aspect in the Italian chapter of the Shoah has been advanced or accepted by foreign historians. To this end, I have selected the (few) existing texts on Italy and the works offering a reconstruction of the Shoah in its entirety, adding the most significant essays published in periodicals or collective volumes and a few of the many books devoted to specific aspects of that event. As I see it, a complex contagion has taken place between the historical reconstruction of the “final solution,” the ethical judgement on it, the containment policies towards post- war Germany, the quest by the successor states of the non-German collaborationist countries to pursue their own “moral absolution.” ____________________ On May 11, 1961 Hulda Campagnano née Cassuto gave evidence at the trial against Adolf Eichmann in Jerusalem. She was the only Italian victim called as a witness, in accordance with a decision taken by the judges for most of the countries involved. Cassuto briefly touched on the anti-Jewish legislation of 1938-1943, explaining that it had been enacted by the Fascist regime and that those laws had not targeted people’s lives and their personal freedom. -

Palabras clave: Fascismo; Masonería; Italia. FREEMASONRY AND FASCISM IN ITALY: AN AMBIGUOUS RELATIONSHIP (1922-1943) Abstract. The creation in 1922 of an authoritarian regime in Italy (a totalitarian dictatorship starting in 1925) caused a confrontation with the Masonic order. Initially, several lodges supported Mussolini’s rise to power, and there were many freemasons among fascist supporters. However, there was a strong anti-Masonic current inherited from nationalism, which was shared by the leader of the “blackshirts” and several important figures of the new regime. Freemasonry was first prohibited among the ranks of the Party and soon (1925) outlawed. Here I set to inquire about the motives that led to this confrontation and the meaning of the freemasonry-fascism conflict, compared to the fascist policy of alliance with liberal forces, association with the Catholic Church and the formation of a new “political religion” incompatible with the Masonic tradition.
