Volume XXIX Issue 3 April 2017 Happy Spring! Volume XXVI I I Issue 3 April 2016 It’s hard to believe we have three-fourths of the school year behind us! Now, it’s time for us to “buckle down and press on” with the remainder of the school year. Please help encourage your child(ren) to be in school and cut down on unnecessary absences.

The third nine weeks ends on April 6th and report cards will be distributed on April 13th. Has your child been bringing home their interims? Upcoming interim date is May 18th. Interims are not mailed home. Please be sure to ask your child to see their interims, especially if you know they are having difficulty in a particular class. One Parent/Teacher Conference is scheduled for the remain- der of the school year on Wednesday, April 26th - appointments are necessary. However, if you have concerns about your child’s performance in any of his/her classes, please call the school and speak with their teacher(s). If you need to schedule a conference with more than one of your child’s teachers at a time other than scheduled conferences, please call our Counseling Office (786-2606, Ext. 3) to ar- range a conference.

Cell phones are primarily for after-school hours and lunch (in the cafeteria only). Students are not to have their phones turned on during class, nor are they to be “text messaging” anyone. Your enforce- ment/support of these rules is greatly appreciated. Any student who uses their phone during class is sub- ject to having it turned in to an administrator and a parent is required to come to the school to pick up the phone between the hours of 2:30 - 4:00 p.m. Our dress code will be enforced this spring. Please read our rules on appearance and attire.

In closing, please let us know if there is anything we can do to help your child achieve academic success throughout the remainder school year. Our teachers are making diligent efforts to make parent contact on a frequent basis. Our Assistant Principals, Miss Lauderdale and Mr. Gebhardt are available for any concerns you have, as well as our School Counselors, Ms. Morganti, Ms. Clark, Mr. Gibbons, and Mr. Kilmartin. Please feel free to call us if we can be of any assistance.

Sincerely,

Jacqueline Bass-Fortune, Principal

Important Dates: Graduation: June 11, 2016 at 12:00 p.m. Chancellor Charger News Page 2 Graduation Practice: June 10, 2016 at 1:00 p.m. Last day of school: June 17, 2016 It’s Springtime “April Showers bring May flowers…” not to mention summer attire. With warm weather and sunny days approaching, students quickly revert from wearing turtlenecks and coats to wearing tank tops, shorts, and flip-flops. Although it is often difficult to find shorts of decent length, especially in the “junior” sections of clothing departments, it is necessary for students to dress appropriately for school. All students are to use good judgment in selecting the clothing and footwear they choose to wear to school each morning.

Basic rules regarding Appearance & Attire No bare backs, strapless tops, or midriffs showing - abdomens shall be covered at all times No short-shorts/biking shorts/skirts/dresses No see-through clothing No undergarments worn as outer wear No cut-off shirts at the bottom, sides, arms, or armpits No clothes with large holes (especially jeans) No sunglasses in the building No inappropriate/obscene/undesirable slogan t-shirts or clothing No sagging pants No leggings except when worn with a “long” covering for both front and back

Cleanliness and neatness are essential to an effective school environment. It is important that positive impressions be formed as a result of student appearance and attire. Students should remember that they represent their school to the community. Any mode of dress that interferes with the operation of the school or classroom is strictly prohibited. Failure to abide by the Appearance & Attire rules may constitute a cause for disciplinary action.

SCHOOL COUNSELING NEWS

Please call for an appointment Due to increased classroom visits, meetings, etc. the counselors may be out of the office at times. In order to insure that your child’s counselor will be available, we ask that parents call for an appointment if they wish to meet with a counselor. We encourage parents to contact individual teachers if there are questions about your child’s classes; however, if we can provide assistance, please give us a call. Communication between our parents and the school is a necessity as we work together to help students.

Scholarship Announcements Scholarship information is found on both the school’s website and in the student’s Naviance Program. Each Senior has a login to Naviance and this program contains the scholarship information that we re- ceive, plus scholarship searches and financial aid information.

The website for Naviance is: www.connection.naviance.com/chancellorhigh The User ID is their email address and their password is their Chancellor student ID number. This is the same program that seniors have used to list their college applications. *All scholarships and grants awarded to seniors need to be reported to Ms. Morganti in the counseling office no later than May 8th.

Seniors’ Financial Aid Forms (FAFSA) Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) forms are now available online for seniors and their parents. Completion of the FAFSA is facilitated if your current tax information is in order and available. Check our their website at www.fafsa.ed.gov

Chancellor Charger News Page 7 Chancellor High School Web Page Chancellor High School maintains a web page with current information that can be of help to both students and parents. The school calendar is updated each month. Counseling has developed a newsletter page for each grade level. Athletic schedules are updated with each season change. There are search engines for the students to use and the library has developed a research page to assist students doing term papers. http://www.spotsylvania.k12.va.us/chhs/index.htm

Suggested Web Sites for Student and Parent Use The following web sites provide excellent information on a variety of topics.

Grade Point Average/Class Rank for Seniors The final determination grade point average (G.P.A.) and class rank will be computed at the end of the final semester of the senior year. Students who have an average of 3.900 and above will graduate with special distinction. Those students with 3.200-3.899 will be classified as honor graduates.

Community Service Seal The Spotsylvania County School Board desires to encourage students to perform service to their community and to learn that through such service the student not only benefits the community but also enhances his/her own life. Therefore, the Board will recognize those students who have provided extended service to the community by awarding a seal on theire diploma. In order to earn this seal, the student must perform one hundred and forty-four hours of service to the community. This would be the equivalent of one hour per week for the four years that the student is in high school. This service can be provided at any time over a high school career, or could be performed in one year. Regulations governing the types of service and tracking of hours have been developed by the principals and are available at the school. Community Service Log sheets must be turned in to Counseling no later than May 5, 2017.
