Happy Spring! Volume XXIX Issue 3 April 2017 Happy Spring! Volume XXVI I I Issue 3 April 2016 It’s hard to believe we have three-fourths of the school year behind us! Now, it’s time for us to “buckle down and press on” with the remainder of the school year. Please help encourage your child(ren) to be in school and cut down on unnecessary absences. The third nine weeks ends on April 6th and report cards will be distributed on April 13th. Has your child been bringing home their interims? Upcoming interim date is May 18th. Interims are not mailed home. Please be sure to ask your child to see their interims, especially if you know they are having difficulty in a particular class. One Parent/Teacher Conference is scheduled for the remain- der of the school year on Wednesday, April 26th - appointments are necessary. However, if you have concerns about your child’s performance in any of his/her classes, please call the school and speak with their teacher(s). If you need to schedule a conference with more than one of your child’s teachers at a time other than scheduled conferences, please call our Counseling Office (786-2606, Ext. 3) to ar- range a conference. Cell phones are primarily for after-school hours and lunch (in the cafeteria only). Students are not to have their phones turned on during class, nor are they to be “text messaging” anyone. Your enforce- ment/support of these rules is greatly appreciated. Any student who uses their phone during class is sub- ject to having it turned in to an administrator and a parent is required to come to the school to pick up the phone between the hours of 2:30 - 4:00 p.m. Our dress code will be enforced this spring. Please read our rules on appearance and attire. In closing, please let us know if there is anything we can do to help your child achieve academic success throughout the remainder school year. Our teachers are making diligent efforts to make parent contact on a frequent basis. Our Assistant Principals, Miss Lauderdale and Mr. Gebhardt are available for any concerns you have, as well as our School Counselors, Ms. Morganti, Ms. Clark, Mr. Gibbons, and Mr. Kilmartin. Please feel free to call us if we can be of any assistance. Sincerely, Jacqueline Bass-Fortune, Principal Important Dates: Graduation: June 11, 2016 at 12:00 p.m. Chancellor Charger News Page 2 Graduation Practice: June 10, 2016 at 1:00 p.m. Last day of school: June 17, 2016 It’s Springtime “April Showers bring May flowers…” not to mention summer attire. With warm weather and sunny days approaching, students quickly revert from wearing turtlenecks and coats to wearing tank tops, shorts, and flip-flops. Although it is often difficult to find shorts of decent length, especially in the “junior” sections of clothing departments, it is necessary for students to dress appropriately for school. All students are to use good judgment in selecting the clothing and footwear they choose to wear to school each morning. Basic rules regarding Appearance & Attire No bare backs, strapless tops, or midriffs showing - abdomens shall be covered at all times No short-shorts/biking shorts/skirts/dresses No see-through clothing No undergarments worn as outer wear No cut-off shirts at the bottom, sides, arms, or armpits No clothes with large holes (especially jeans) No sunglasses in the building No inappropriate/obscene/undesirable slogan t-shirts or clothing No sagging pants No leggings except when worn with a “long” covering for both front and back Cleanliness and neatness are essential to an effective school environment. It is important that positive impressions be formed as a result of student appearance and attire. Students should remember that they represent their school to the community. Any mode of dress that interferes with the operation of the school or classroom is strictly prohibited. Failure to abide by the Appearance & Attire rules may constitute a cause for disciplinary action. This prohibits students from having food delivered from a restaurant during school hours. Students will not be called out of class to pick up food in the office or lobby. Thank you for your cooperation with this matter. Independent Study Course Students who wish to take courses not offered in the regular Spotsylvania County Schools curriculum should apply to the Independent Study program. Students may design their own course by submitting a proposal outlining the goals, objectives, and a time-line of activities and projects. These proposals are reviewed by the Gifted & Talented Coordinator for Chancellor High School, Mrs. Ronda Dockery, and students are then interviewed to determine the feasibility of the proposed course. If accepted, the stu- dents are assigned to this course for one block of the regular school year and will receive one elective credit for successful completion of the course. All interested students should contact Mrs. Dockery for applications and details. Applications should be submitted in late spring for the following school year. • 2012-2013 Annual Report to the Community 1 Who We Are
The President’s Message At Germanna Community College, we know we must not waste our greatest resource--the potential of all of the people in our communities. That potential lies not only in the minds of the young, but in the untapped abilities of workers who must be retrained especially in fields where there will be high-wage jobs. An educated workforce creates a better economy for us all, translating into higher pay for local people and a better quality of life for their families, helping existing businesses be more profitable, attracting new employers from outside the area and helping to spawn start-up companies. An educated community makes for better citizens and brighter futures for all. With your support, Germanna will continue to expand to meet our communities’ needs. With your support, we will move forward with plans for a permanent campus in Stafford County and continue to seek ways to better serve Caroline and Madison County residents. With your support, we will continue to expand our Fredericksburg Campus in Spotsylvania, to grow our respected nursing program at our Locust Grove Campus in Orange County, offer new programs at our Daniel echnologyT Center in Culpeper and offer classes at Dahlgren. “Let us think of Germanna is working hard to respond quickly to provide students with the education as the knowledge, skills and attitude that lead to jobs that pay well and give local companies a competitive edge in a challenging global market. means of developing Nearly 80 percent of Germanna students remain in our area after our greatest abilities, completing their college work, investing the skills they’ve learned in their local communities.
