Restaurants Closing During the Summer Months (2016)
JUNE 22, 2016 Restaurants Closing During the Summer Months (2016) This post may come as bad news, at least for "foodies" visiting Stockholm in July and early August. Many top tier restaurants (Michelin star, gourmet) close for a few weeks during the summer. This is mainly due to the generous Swedish vacation rules leading many top restaurants to feel that they can't offer excellent food & service with summer replacement staff. Another reason, perhaps, is that many Stockholmers leave the city during this period and there aren't enough visiting "foodies" to fill these types of restaurants to make it profitable. No businessmen in town either... wining & dining clients. At any rate, the good news is that there are a few which will be open all summer and several other top restaurants have some other options during these weeks... and you always have a plethora of other great restaurants in the city to choose from! Most of these restaurants are also closed during the big Midsummer holiday weekend (June 24th-26th). Michelin star and Bib Gourmand restaurants: • Mathias Dahlgren- closed between July 15th and August 9th (both the Dining Room and the Food Bar). • Frantzén- closes on July 9th. Reopening at a new & better location in 2017! • Oaxen Krog- open all summer as normal. • Oaxen Slip- open all summer... every day for lunch & dinner. • Gastrologik- open all summer, though their more casual Speceriet will be closed until the beginning of August for renovations. • Ekstedt- closed between July 17th and August 5th. • Esperanto- the dining room is closed between June 24th and August 5th. -

Architecture & the City
Architecture & the City “The Missing Chapter” From Blocks to Barracks: The Traditional City & Ecology Michael Dennis 259 Plan of the Hellenistic city of Priene, begun ca. 350 BC. Population: 4,000–5,000. Scale: 1”= 500’ Plan of the Vauban suburb of Freiberg, Germany, begun mid-1990s. Population: 5,634. Scale: 1”= 500’ 260 From Blocks to Barracks: The Traditional City and Ecology Toward the end of John Ellis’s review of my recent book, Architecture & the City: Selected Essays, he suggested: A potential missing chapter in this otherwise splendid book could include exam- ples of sustainable urbanism from other parts of the world. Taking clues from work such as Harrison Fraker’s research in his book The Hidden Potential of Sustainable Neighborhoods, there are examples of compact, transit-oriented urbanism with all the latest building technology in terms of energy efficiency, storm water management, green roofs and underground waste removal in places like Hammarby Sjostad in Stockholm, the Bo 01 district in Malmö, and Vauban in Frieberg, Germany to offer a way forward. These examples together with a Green New Deal in terms of a major program of public works infrastructure are needed to head off disaster in the next few decades as the realities of Climate Change threaten our survival. I was not familiar with these projects, or their host cities (Freiberg, Germany; Malmö, Sweden; and Stockholm, Sweden), and had not yet read Harrison’s book. But, since we are in an environmental crisis of epic proportions, and since cities are the most efficient form of human habitation on a per capita basis, I decided to look at these three projects—expecting to find genuine examples of urbanism, enhanced by comprehensive technologies. -
Taylor's Informal Guide to Stockholm
Taylor’s Informal Guide to Stockholm I had the great fortune to live in Sweden for two years while serving as a missionary for my church. These years of seeking ways to help people while also having opportunities to share my beliefs were possibly the biggest catalyst to making me who I am today. The way my worldview shifted, matured and developed while living in Sweden ultimately led me to where I am professionally, academically and in my family life (story for a different time, I’m happy to share). For about a third of that time, I lived in or around Stockholm and really grew to love the city and I’m so excited that you’re going Missionary Taylor (on the left) with companion, to have the opportunity to experience during its Thomas Cleere, May 2008. Stadhuset (City Hall) is best season, Summer. Swedish people are in the background typically introverted and like to be left alone. They "1 avoid all forms of social interaction with people they don’t know, with rare occurrences of courtesy “hellos”. These social norms get significantly relaxed during the summer months and everyone is usually really happy, mostly because the days are long and the weather is nice. Something we in New England can appreciate after a long, dark and cold winter.# We didn’t have the money or time to eat out or go into many museums / other attractions. So my guide is largely based on walking through and exploring di!erent parts of the city. This is also keeping in mind that you’ll be plenty busy at the conference venue in Älvsjö. -
