It is an indefinitely long period of time that contains at least two eras. Geologic time is divided into two eons.The more ancient eon is called the Precambrian, and the more recent is the Phanerozoic. Each eon is subdivided into smaller spans called eras.The Precambrian eon is divided from most ancient into the Hadean era, Archean era, and Proterozoic era. See Figure 1. For example, the Paleozoic era is divided into the Cambrian, Ordovician, Silurian, Devonian, Carboniferous,and Permian periods. Cynthia Brown – ORIAS Summer Institute 2013 1 “A Big History Perspective” Cynthia Brown, Professor Emerita, History Department, Dominican University of California summarized by Stephen Pitcher Asked what “Big History” meant to them, participants responded that it meant “How the world began,” or “macro-history.” For Brown, it is history on the biggest possible scale— an evidence-based, scientific origin story, going from the Big Bang to the present. Professor Brown said that four big things had occurred in the Big History field in the last five years. The first involved the participation in 2010 of geologist Walter Alvarez, who thought the approximately forty people then teaching “something like Big History” weren’t incorporating enough geology, and invited six Big Historians, Brown among them, to his geological institute in Italy, where he took them to places where the K-T boundary, the iridium layer, could be seen. A lot of geology was learned and, partially as a consequence, the International Big History Association (IBHA) was founded. (The initials could not be used in the url as they had already been spoken for by the International Buckskin Horse Association. You can find the website at http://ibhanet.org/) A second development in the field arose from Dominican University’s dissatisfaction with its First Year Experience program. Such programs are taught by many colleges in many ways—emphasizing skills, great books, etc.—and are crucial to enrollment retention. Dominica n, in its reworking of that program, decided to require Big History, and to follow up with a second-semester course involving a specific discipline viewed through a Big History lens. -

Renton Thomas Repine Follow this and additional works at: https://researchrepository.wvu.edu/earthscience_readings Part of the Geology Commons C\.\- \~ THE TRIASSIC PERIOD and the BEGINNING OF THE MESOZOIC ERA Introduction to the Mesozoic Era: The Triassic Period is the first period of the Mesozoic Era, a span of time from 245 million years ago to 66 million years ago. Although the Mesozoic era commonly known as the "Age of the Dinosaurs", it should be pointed out that there were other important evolutionary developments taking place such as the appearance of the first mammal birds and flowering plans. The onset of the Mesozoic Era, the Triassic Period, was also a time of profound tectonic activity affecting the entire North American craton. In the east, the primary event was the breakup of Pangea and the formation of the Atlantic Ocean. In the west, it was the formation ofan Andean-type continental margin as the newly-formed continent of North America rapidly moved westward in response to the opening of the Atlantic Ocean coupled with the addition of exotic terranes to the western margin of the continent.. As the Atlantic oceanic ridge rose, the volume of ocean waters that was displaced was sufficient to result in the most extensive flooding of the continent by an epeiric sea since the Paleozoic; a sea whose presence was recorded by the accumulation of extensive carbonates throughout the continental interior. In the oceans, new life forms evolved to fill the vacancies brought about by the Permian extinction. -

Bertrand Russell Introduction • Earth science, geology and environmental geology involve the study of the Earth and the processes that shape its surface but have different emphases. • The Earth System is composed of four principal components: atmosphere, hydrosphere, biosphere, and the solid Earth. • The science of Earth becomes relevant to society when we examine the interaction between human beings and the planet we share. The Good Earth represents an attempt to introduce students to Earth Science with an emphasis on our interaction with our environment. Consequently, this text includes components from two common undergraduate courses, Earth Science and Environmental Geology. These courses have more elements in common than they have differences. • Geology is the study of the Earth. That includes how the planet was formed, what it is made from, and how it has changed over time. Geologists study the processes that occur on Earth's surface and others taking place within the planet's interior. • Environmental geology views geology through the prism of the human experience.
