The study of the Portuguese marine ichthyofauna has a long historical tradition, rooted back in the 18th Century. Here we present an annotated checklist of the marine fishes from Portuguese waters, including the area encompassed by the proposed extension of the Portuguese continental shelf and the Economic Exclusive Zone (EEZ). The list is based on historical literature records and taxon occurrence data obtained from natural history collections, together with new revisions and occurrences. -

In the Caribbean, populations of Nassau grouper Epinephelus striatus have declined due to fishing impacts on spawning aggregations. Despite local and regional efforts by fisheries man- agers to implement regulations protecting spawning aggregations, few Nassau grouper popula- tions appear to be recovering. In order to improve management strategies for this critically endan- gered species, it is necessary to understand the spatial ecology of the species across seasons and years. In the Cayman Islands, we used a multi-year, presence/absence, depth-coded acoustic tag- ging dataset of Nassau grouper to characterize patterns in the species’ behavior and vertical habi- tat use at home reef sites. -

Stock Assessment Form Demersal species Reference year:2017 Reporting year:2018 ABSTRACT The CopeMed II study Group between Spain and Morocco on blackspot seabream (Pagellus bogaraveo) stock of the Strait of Gibraltar area was held in Tangier (Morocco) from 01 to 03 October 2017. The main objective of this WG was to update the existing data and information and to carry out an update joint stock assessment of this stock in both GSAs 01 and 03. Different assessment approaches were conducted during the WG: 1a Cohort Analysis (VPA) based on VIT with the YPR and SSP/R, 2a global model Biodyn (Pedro de Barros), 3a LCA and YPR model (Pedro de Barros) and 4 a gadget model. The results of those 3 methods attempted on the blackspot seabream population of the Strait of Gibraltar showed the same stock status: overexploitation of this resource. The reference point estimates by the gadget model are F0.1 = 0.17, Fcurr = 0.38 and the ratio Fcurr/F0,1 = 2,235. After the presentation of the assessment results within the WGSAD 2018, the results of all the models were similar and were accepted and the model adopted is the gadget with the support of the results of other models. During 2010–2012 we collected data on the population status and ecology of the European Shag (Mediterranean subspecies) Phalacrocorax aristotelis desmarestii on Gavdos Island (south Crete), conducting boat-based surveys, nest monitoring, and diet analysis. The species’ population was estimated at 80–110 pairs, with 59% breeding success and 1.6 fledglings per successful nest. Pellet morphological and genetic analysis of otoliths and fish bones, respectively, showed that the shags’ diet consisted of 31 species. A total of 4 223 otoliths were identified to species level; 47.2% belonged to sand smelts Atherina boyeri, 14.2% to bogues Boops boops, 11.3% to picarels Spicara smaris, and 10.5% to damselfishes Chromis chromis. -

Moyano Received: 31 January 2017; Accepted: 5 May 2017; Published: 13 May 2017 Abstract: Silvery-black porgy (Sparidentex hasta) is recognized as one of the most promising fish species for aquaculture diversification in the Persian Gulf and the Oman Sea regions. In this regard, S. hasta has received considerable attention, and nutritional studies focused on establishing the nutritional requirements for improving diet formulation have been conducted during recent years. Considering the results from different dose–response nutritional studies on macronutrient requirements conducted in this species, it can be concluded that diets containing ca. 48% crude protein, 15% crude lipid, 15% carbohydrates and 20 KJ g−1 gross energy are recommended for on-growing S. hasta juveniles. In addition, the optimum essential amino acid profile for this species (expressed as g 16 g N−1), should be approximately arginine 5.3, lysine 6.0, threonine 5.2, histidine 2.5, isoleucine 4.6, leucine 5.4, methionine + cysteine 4.0 (in a diet containing 0.6 cysteine), phenylalanine + tyrosine 5.6 (in a diet containing 1.9 tyrosine), tryptophan 1.0 and valine 4.6. -

One specimen was caught by trawl nets at about 300 m depth in Rass Albassit, north of Lattakia, on 25 February 2019, and 6 additional specimens were caught by gill nets at a depth of 120 m off Jablah coast on 7 April 2019. This record represents the first sighting of this immigrant Atlantic species introduced in the Eastern Mediterranean (Levantine Basin). These specimens were found mixing in the same net haul with populations other Sparidae species such as: Pagellus acarne and Dentex macrophthalmus.
