BOX; 1408, Lattakia, Syria [email protected] (corresponding author); [email protected]; [email protected]; [email protected]; [email protected] ABSTRACT Syria’s total marine fisheries catches were estimated for the 1950-2010 time period using a reconstruction approach which accounted for all fisheries removals, including unreported commercial landings, discards, and recreational and subsistence catches. All unreported estimates were added to the official data, as reported by the Syrian Arab Republic to the United Nation’s Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). Total reconstructed catch for 1950-2010 was around 170,000 t, which is 78% more than the amount reported by Syria to the FAO as their national catch. The unreported components added over 74,000 t of unreported catches, of which 38,600 t were artisanal landings, 16,000 t industrial landings, over 4,000 t recreational catches, 3,000 t subsistence catches and around 12,000 t were discards. -

These specimens were sampled monthly during landings of coastal fi sheries. Among the whole samples, 85 individuals were not sexually identifi ed. The sexed specimens were composed of 260 males (46.84 %) and 295 (53.15 %). The monthly sex ratio showed signifi cant differences between males and females. Females outnumbered males for sizes between 130 and 199 mm, while males outnumbered females from the 200 mm size up. Sexes combined, the length-weight relationship had a negative allometry. The reproduction period of the common pandora starts in April and ends in August. The gonado- somatic index (GSI) reaches the highest values in June for males and in July for females. -

Cadmium Uptake Kinetics in Parts of the Seagrass Cymodocea Nodosa

This study aims to provide novel information on metal accumulation in seagrasses under laboratory conditions to support their use as a tool in the evaluation and abatement of contamination in the feld. We investigated the kinetics of cadmium uptake into adult leaf blades, leaf sheaths, rhizomes and roots of Cymodocea nodosa in exposure concentrations within the range of 1 cadmium levels in industrial wastewater (0.5–40 mg L− ). Results: A Michaelis–Menten-type equation satisfactorily described cadmium accumulation kinetics in seagrass 1 parts, particularly at 0.5–5 or 10 mg L− . However, an S equation best described the uptake kinetics in rhizomes at 1 1 5 mg L− and roots at 10 and 20 mg L− . Equilibrium concentration and uptake rate tended to increase with the exposure concentration, indicating that seagrass displays a remarkable accumulation capacity of cadmium and refect high cadmium levels in the surrounding medium. Concerning leaf blades and rhizomes, the bioconcentration factor at equilibrium (range 73.3–404.3 and 14.3–86.3, respectively) was generally lower at higher exposure concentrations, indicating a gradual reduction of available binding sites. -

Seagrasses have key ecological roles in coastal ecosystems and can form extensive meadows supporting high biodiversity. The global species diversity of seagrasses is low (b60 species), but species can have ranges that extend for thousands of kilometers of coastline. Seagrass bioregions are defined here, based on species assemblages, species distributional ranges, and tropical and temperate influences. Six global bioregions are presented: four temperate and two tropical. The temperate bioregions include the Temperate North Atlantic, the Temperate North Pacific, the Mediterranean, and the Temperate Southern Oceans. The Temperate North Atlantic has low seagrass diversity, the major species being Zostera marina, typically occurring in estuaries and lagoons. The Temperate North Pacific has high seagrass diversity with Zostera spp. in estuaries and lagoons as well as Phyllospadix spp. in the surf zone. The Mediterranean region has clear water with vast meadows of moderate diversity of both temperate and tropical seagrasses, dominated by deep-growing Posidonia oceanica. -

2. Tipología de suelos en la comunidad andaluza 25 2.2. SUELOS DE LA PROVINCIA DE CÁDIZ. TIPOS PRINCIPALES Y CARACTERÍSTICAS DE LOS MISMOS En la provincia de Cádiz pueden distinguir una serie de regiones naturales que, si bien no separadas entre sí por ningún accidente geográfico, son diferentes por su geología, clima, suelos, vegetación, etc. Estas regiones o comarcas naturales son: La Serranía de Grazalema, Las Sierras Subbéticas del Norte, las Sierras y Colinas del Campo de Gibraltar, La Campiña y las Costas. Para estudiar los suelos de esta provincia la dividiremos en estas regiones naturales. 2.2.1. Suelos de la Serranía de Grazalema Los suelos de la Serranía de Grazalema son en general, de escaso desarrollo, ocupan siempre áreas pequeñas y constituyen con frecuencia formaciones edáficas aisladas. Ello es debido al accidentado relieve de la región que dificulta la formación del suelo y la mayoría de las veces, promociona su erosión. Así, los suelos más abundantes en esta comarca son Leptosoles líticos . Existen también Luvisoles relictos rellenando huecos y hendiduras de rocas, Regosoles y Cambisoles sobre calizas, areniscas silíceas y materiales triásicos. Todos ellos muestran como carácter general más acusado, el constituir formaciones ais ladas y pedregos as . Los suelos de esta región dependen, además de la vegetación y el microclima, sobre todo de la altitud, la topografía y el substrato geológico. Los principales suelos son: Leptosoles líticos, réndsicos y úmbricos. Luvisoles cálcicos. Regosoles calcáricos. Cambisoles calcáricos, gléicos y eútricos. 2.2.1.1.- Leptosoles En Grazalema aparecen distintos suelos sobre pendientes acusadas que alcanzan poco desarrollo y cuyo material orgánico e inorgánico está poco descompuesto.
