Col. Albert Guy Benson - With a keen eye and a steady hand, Col. Albert Guy Benson brought magic into the lives of generations of surfers in Hawaii and around the world with the many surf movies he filmed. Benson's Bolex camera captured the exploits of Hawaii's greatest modern-era surfers at the peak of their ability as they chased waves from Kauai to the Big Island and all stops in between. Benson, 70, died Saturday in Houston. He was born in Washington, D.C., in 1925, and his military parents brought him to Hawaii at an early age. After he was stationed at Schofield Barracks as a lieutenant in 1967, Benson made it a point to instill a love of the ocean in his children. "He fell in love with the sport," said Benson's son Fielding. "He took us kids to Pokai Bay and the inside section at Haleiwa to teach us to surf." Benson started taking still photographs of his children surfing, and as their skills improved he started sending photographs to surf magazines. He finally graduated to a 16mm Bolex movie camera and shot footage for feature length and documentary surf movies. When he retired after 28 years of Army service, Benson devoted more time to his passion for filming. "We all turned into surf fanatics," said Fielding. "Becky, Blanche and I traveled the world contest tour while my dad was filming us. It helped us develop our style to see it on film." Benson is survived by his wife, Blanche "Bebe"; sons Fielding and Guy; daughters Blanche Yoshida, Elizabeth "Betsy" Soon and Rebecca "Becky" Turner; 11 grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; three nephews; and a niece. Father Louis Boeynaems, a hard-working builder of parochial schools and halls and an early proponent of Father Damien’s beatification, died March 13, 1996 at St. Francis Hospice in Honolulu. Boeynaems, 85, was born in Antwerp, Belgium. He was professed in the Congregation of Sacred Hearts in 1935 and ordained a Roman Catholic priest on July 26, 1936, serving on the islands of Oahu, Hawaii, Maui and Molokai for nearly 50 years. When asked what he wished to be remembered for, Boeynaems would invariably mention his construction projects, including St. Joseph School in Makawao and the Sts. Peter and Paul Church in Sunset Beach, cobbled together from a 100-foot high stone crusher, three warehouses and a service station. “He was quite intelligent,” recalled the Rev. Lawrence Mampaey. “He was a voracious reader and a hard worker.” Boeynaems also re-edited Robert Schoofs’ history of the Catholic Church in Hawaii, “Pioneers of the Faith.” Compiled from the journals of Hawaii’s priests and the records of various parishes, the manuscript was left unfinished when Schoofs died in 1968. Boeynaems spent six years finishing the book. “He was a friend of mine and I hated to see all his work go to waste,” Boeynaems said at the time. “Even among Catholics, so few know about the history of the church in Hawaii. The only one anyone knows about is Father Damien, but there are hundreds of other hard-working and dedicated men who deserve some recognition.” Boeynaems was the nephew of Bishop Libert Boeynaems, who served Hawaii from 1903 to 1926. Ollie “Doc” Burkett , former executive officer for the Hospital Association of Hawaii and chairman of the Regional Medical Program, died Feb. 7, 1996 in Oakland, CA. Burkett was 68. He was executive vice –president for the nonprofit organization of hospitals and nursing homes for 13 years until he resigned. He became business manager for the State of Hawaii Organization of Police Officers in 1980. He played first base for the St. Louis Cardinals minor league team and also played basketball for the Navy. While in the Navy, Burkett served as hospital corpsman and retired as chief after 20 years of service. In Hawaii, Burkett started the Shriner’s Aloha Chapter. He directed the Hawaii Hospital Association. After retiring from SHOPO, Burkett continued keeping himself busy. He became general manager of Tavana’s Polynesian Review and was president of his consulting business called DB Enterprises.
