John 15: Jesus says “love one another as I have loved you.” Dear Friends in Christ, As I sit before our Lord Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament and write this leer, I am so thankful to our Risen Lord that He has brought me here to be with all of you. Nothing happens by chance. And although the circumstances in my arrival here were not the most ideal, we believe that God has a plan in everything. When I met with Archbishop Lucas a couple of weeks ago and he assigned me as Administrator of St. Francis Borgia, I was very excited. By the grace of God, Archbishop Curss ordained me to Helen Herman the Holy Priesthood on June 5, 2004. Vince Kavanaugh Jason Smith My first assignment was as an Associate Pastor at St. Robert Bellarmine in Omaha. In Judy Quest Kevin Mann 2007, I was assigned as Associate Pastor at St. Columbkille Parish in Papillion, before Mary Ann Anderson moving to Hooper and Scribner as Pastor in 2011.     The Kamehameha Statue Jacob Adler In the Hawaiian legislature of 1878, Walter Murray Gibson, then a freshman member for Lahaina, Maui, proposed a monument to the centennial of Hawaii's "discovery" by Captain James Cook. Gibson said in part: Kamehameha the Great "was among the first to greet the discoverer Cook on board his ship in 1778 . and this Hawaiian chief's great mind, though [he was] a mere youth then, well appreciated the mighty changes that must follow after the arrival of the white strangers." After reviewing the hundred years since Cook, Gibson went on: And is not this history at which we have glanced worthy of some commemoration? All nations keep their epochs and their eras. ... By commemorating notable periods, nations renew as they review their national life.     Father Damien, hero of the Hawaiian people ! Open letter to Mrs. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, US Representative Tremelo, August 20th, 2020 Dear Mrs. Ocasio-Cortez, For many members of our Father Damien family association, Hawaii is a bit like a second home: by participating in our group tours 'In the footsteps of Damien' or through individual visits to Hawaii and to Molokai, and by the local contacts that are maintained there. We are also very much interested in Hawaiian history, for an understanding of the world in which Damien – Kamiano for native Hawaiians – successfully integrated himself. Like many Belgians – fellow countrymen of Damien, who in 2005 elected him as 'Greatest Belgian' for his achievements at the other side of the world – we got a shock when reading in the newspaper that you chose, amongst the 102 statues in the U.S. Capitol’s National Statuary Hall Collection in Washington, the one of our relative Father Damien as a ‘typical example of white colonialism, patriarchy and white supremacist culture'; with the suggestion why in his place doesn’t stand the only and last queen of Hawaii, Lili'uokalani. At the same time, we had a 'déjà vu' feeling: in the years after Damien's death (1889), several attempts were made to criticize his work, deny his achievement and destroy his legacy; mostly by envious colleagues and local superiors with whom Damien had collided by his stubbornness. The very last attack dates back to 130 years ago : it was a letter by a certain Reverend Doctor Hyde addressed to the Bishop of Honolulu, in which he depicted Damien as ‘coarse, dirty, headstrong and bigoted, who had no hand in the reforms and improvements’ and decried the ‘extravagant newspaper laudations as if he was a most saintly philanthropist’.

Saint Damian de Veuster exemplified the American spirit of taking on seemingly impossible odds, or overcoming difficulties with dedicated labor and organization, and of finding value in each person. A. Saint Damian was a Sacred Heart priest from Belgium who volunteered for ministry in Hawaii. 1. Born on January 3, 1840 , the seventh child (4th son) of Johannes and Catherine de Veuster in Tremelo in the Flemish part of Belgium. Two of his sisters would become nuns and a brother would become a priest. 2. Because of the humble circumstances, his schooling ended when he was 13 and he began working on the farm. His parents in fact anticipated that he would take over the farm one day. 3. At the age of 20, he entered seminary for the Congregation of the Sacred Hearts of Mary and Jesus, after his brother Augustine, who took the name Pamphili. Joseph took the name Damian after St. Damian, a physician who with his brother Cosmos, were doctors in ancient Rome who served the poor and were eventually martyred for the faith. 4. Both Damian and his brother Pamphili wanted to be missionaries. Pamphili initially volunteered to go to Hawaii, but was unable to do so for health reasons. And so, Damian volunteered to minister in Hawaii. And, in 1884, he was sent to Hawaii, where he was ordained a priest in that same year.
