Alex.” Only Stirlitz could figure out that he had been conferred the rank of the Hero of the Soviet Union. On February 8, 2003, Vladimir Putin awarded the Order for Merit to the Fatherland, Class III, to the actor Vyacheslav Tikhonov. It was Tikhonov’s 75th birthday. Tikhonov had enjoyed a long career on stage and in film, but no one was under any illusions for what role he was receiving this honor — the same one, in fact, for which he had received a medal as a Hero of Socialist Labor from the Soviet premier Leonid Brezhnev in 1982, which was already nine years after the fact. Tikhonov was synonymous with the role of Max Otto von Stirlitz — a.k.a.“Justas,” a.k.a. Maxim Maximovich Isaev, secret agent of Moscow Center — in the television series Seventeen Moments of Spring. -

The history of Russian cinema goes back more than a century, it knew the stages of rise and fall, ideological repression and complete creative freedom. This controversial history was studied by both Russian and foreign scientists. Of course, Soviet and Western scientists studied Soviet cinema from different ideological positions. Soviet filmmakers were generally active in supporting socialist realism in cinema, while Western scholars, on the contrary, rejected this method and paid great attention to the Soviet film avant-garde of the 1920s. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, the situation changed: russian and foreign film historians began to study cinema in a similar methodological manner, focusing on both ideological and socio-cultural aspects of the cinematographic process. It is known that the French brought the movies to Russia. It was at the beginning of 1896. However, many Russian photographers were able to quickly learn a new craft. Cold War Spy Fiction in Russian Popular Culture: From Suspi- cion to Acceptance via Seventeen Moments of Spring Erik Jens Introduction In 1972, a classified CIA document (right) describing an episode of a novel that was serialized in Komsomolskaya Pravda during January and February 1969 was filed in CIA Headquarters. The episode involved a supposed Soviet intelligence operation early in 1945, in which a “Colonel Isayev” successfully “sabotaged” negotiations OSS officer Allen Dulles was then conducting with the Germans in Bern, Switzerland. Ac- cording to the report, Isayev also met two senior Germans, “Chancellor Bruening” and “Gestapo chief Mueller.” The report writer went on to conclude the account was “in all probability a fabrication”—although the Dulles negotiation was a fact— but in the interests of caution the report’s preparer recommended it be filed in Heinrich Muel- ler’s CIA file—where it remained at least until 2008, when it was declassified.1 As it turned out, the episode was neither a real operation nor a “fabrication,” but a synopsis of an episode in a Soviet spy thriller titled Seventeen Moments of Spring, which went on to become one of the USSR’s most pop- ular and enduring television miniseries. The main character of the film – the legendary Red Commander Kotov, a hero of the Civil War and a favourite of Stalin – spends the summer in a dacha outside Moscow with his beloved wife, little daughter and the family of his wife. Kotov’s wife’s family are representatives of the old-world bourgeois intelligentsia and they are trying to live as if nothing has happened to their world. Paradoxically, their illusion is maintained thanks to Kotov who puts up with them out of love for his wife Marusya and their daughter Nadia. This idyll of calm and happiness is suddenly disturbed by the arrival of Mitya, a former student of Marusya’s father and her ex-fiance. Mitya is a part of that world which was destroyed by the revolution and by those like Kotov. The “relatives” of Marusya, who just tolerate Kotov, warmly welcome Mitya with open arms. Today’s Mitya, however, is an officer of the secret police NKVD. And he has not come just to visit. He has come to take revenge. Now Kotov has to experience what it means to suddenly lose everything that is dear to his heart. Whoever kills the dragon, becomes a dragon, which, in turn, must be killed. -
