You've got to control your costs, but you can't cost control yourself into making a profit. You've got to get some new revenue in there.

You fought in World War II. How do you relate that experience to today's tragic terrorist attacks?

When I dropped bombs on Berlin I prayed that I'd never have to see the time when anybody dropped bombs on the of America. But that dream went out the window on Sept. 11.

What are lessons you've learned in life?

Live every day to the fullest. I've done the most important work of my life after I retired from Knight Ridder. In 1989, the year I retired, I got involved in a program to help the homeless in Miami, and it's turned out to be a national model. We've helped 14,400 people leave the streets of our city for something better. So when you have that extra time, use it to help other people.
